Shawlands Arcade 1971
From "Glasgow 1980" directed by Oscar Marzaroli. The full film can be found at the website of the Scottish Screen Archive. Some footage of Shawlands Arcade and (I'm guessing) the newly opened Safeway supermarket, filmed in 1971.

Some more footage of Shawlands, Langside and Pollokshaws from May 1990. Film is quite shaky (lots of jump cuts). Queen's Park, Battlefield Monument, Shawlands Cross, Pollokshaws, Pollok Park, and ends with the construction of Morrisons at Crossmyloof.

Cocteau Twins - Fruitopia (original)
well done for catching the add!
I was born that day
Thank you for this. I was reminiscing today. Took me back in time.
A lot of these businesses are still there…miss these times
Mon the Shaw Lands! I used to work there back in 1984/85. Remember going to Henry Healy's or the Italian deli for my lunch!
This is an invaluable piece of music history. Thanks the lord your recorded it once then recorded it again
See Alan Beveridges wee fish shop is still there anyway
young man there is a camcorder club in and near Eastwood south side of glasgow,go visit them and learn to film much better, when filming go very slow and steady use a tripod and learn to pan slowly without jerking, insert several still photos into shot so folks can read a plaque or written subject matter, also edit out all wind noise ie use a wind furry sock on microphone.
So nice to see a glimpse of Shawlands as it used to be. Had forgotten so many of those wee shops and business existed.
Part of this film is the Gorbals
Interesting to see that the centre of the Arcade was uncovered back then. I wonder when and why the covered section was built as it looked much better then.
I remember this
Watching this in 2022. I lived at 8 Ellangowan Road (just off Haggs Road beside the Old Swan Inn at 4:24) when this was filmed. Shawlands was a fantastic area back then. Great upload, made me very nostalgic.
The most pointless video I have ever seen on RUclips. Kilmarnock Road on speed. Flying past everything worth looking at.
The most idiotic comment I have ever seen on RUclips. You do know that you can change the playback speed of videos on RUclips? You do know that, don't you? Hasn't anyone ever shown you how to change the settings? Oh dear.
I wasn’t even born, like, where was I?😵💫
I genuinely love this piece of music!
What was being built by the station was at that time a safeway on the site of the ice rink. It was defunt when I moved into Minard Road the year before this film was shot but it still managed to leak ammonia one time forcing us all to stay indoors.
My grandparents met in that ice rink. Gramps played for the hockey team and gran was a live-in nanny over the road from the Tinto Firs. She went into the rink on her night off
Only the beginning was Shawlands then Kilmarnock Road before turning into Coustonholme Road and into Pollokshaws.
Thank you for this, this was my walk home from school in the 90's. Lovely to see it again!
,the photographer is going far to fastit spoiled for me the car driver so had to go
This needs to go to someone who can actually rip it to PC or at least DVD that can be ripped to PC so we can all have it in beautiful quality with the original stereo audio track laid over top of it.
What happened to the Bus garages corporation at newland.s.
It's now the site of a large Morrison's supermarket (as is the barrel works which used to be next door to it).
Not a smelly in sight ahh the good old days when all you had to contend with was the odd drunk glaswegian.
Amazing. It's incredible to think that everyone in this film is probably dead now.
Wouldn't go near the Southside with bargepole.
@denoneil1134 And why would that be?
Trees .... Great.... they look so 90s
Having been born and raised in Minard Road in 1944, I would say 1890s.
Sublime.
Recall when Shawlands Arcade looked that way.
Í Loveð Fruitopia!! Wish I háð some now.
Whenever I heard Cocteau Twins on TV I just about had a fanboy fit. I never heard the fruitopia commercial, but once I walked into a patients room in the early 90s. She was watching an action or police show, and it was going off. The villain jumped out of a plane with a parachute, and all the time he was falling they were playing the end of “A Kissed out Red FloatBoat”, with the long sustained high notes. I decided if I ever went skydiving Í would try to listen to that song on the way down!!!
Wow i never ever thought I would get to see this old street again. Awesome 👏
Victor Vezza still unchanged to this day.
I stayed in deanston drive then, loved the kebab shop around the corner, hated the thieving bar staff at the local nightclub, always short changed you
Do you remember a chip shop called Elios which I heard was on Skirving Street.
Good 👍 stuff
All that fruit and veg and not a plastic wrapper in sight. I wonder who, besides the plastic manufacturers decided we really needed it.
So true
Probably the person who realised that by wrapping 6 apples in some plastic you can make a person who only wanted to buy 3 pay twice as much.
My friends family owned the panda hut before a fatal crash that killed almost all of them. RIP wah yin Crawford
Ohh my god.. so sorry to hear that 😓
Sorry to hear that Diana. My mum and dad lived in Shawlands when they first got married in 1977 and my dad loved a chip shop which he said was called Elios and he thinks it was in Skirving Street. Is he right and so do you know when Elios closed down.?
This is brilliant stuff Some stuff hasnt changed , others quite a bit
Wow memories thanks 🙏
Omg I remember half the stuff from now my school is shawlands primary so
Mines was Shawlands academy
@@Diana-yr8wp same
They need to demolish the Shawlands arcade and start from scratch. It’s utter dross to the area
Great to see BP Micros again, at 3:27. It was just a little shop but I thought it was brilliant. They used to sell computer games for the Commodore 64. Today, it's just one of those 24 hour "Lifestyle" grocery shops. I wish we could bring back the old Shawlands.

I worked my first summer...and took my savings down to BP Micro to buy an Amiga. Must have been 1992. Carried it back home just across from the arcade. Great memories
This shopping arcade is not in gorbals
They showed a brief glimpse of one that was in the Gorbals, right at the end.
Sad to see all the shiny little independent businesses with their well presented shop fronts, now replaced by tacky vaping shops and phone repair centres. Can thank Tesco for that!
Was that Tesco in the background, just after you passed Boots the Chemist?
2:26 - A Tardis! I knew there used to be a Tardis outside the Granary, I've been telling everyone that for years but they all said I was making it up.
Yes there was a "Tardis" there I had been in it a couple of times when been a naughty boy
there was a Tardis outside Sammy Dowes as was it then had a facelift and became the Granary
Was this taken from an album or was this recorded for the commercial?
+Dillon Aubin It doesn't appear on any of the albums. It may have been made especially for the commercial or it may just have been appropriate piece of music that they had lying around.
I'm glad the housewife and her family don't get confounded by traffic. The builders of the 60s knew what was up
Video much better slowed down...thanks a lot.
They public toilets in Queens Park are long gone.
and now they're back. See? Patience
They’re a coffee shop now😂
This was very nostalgic! interesting to note the variety in local shops. it's all charity shops and tanning salons now :( I remember that old arcade and the wee shops in it, like the Hair Company haha!
I mind 'The Book Shop - Farmfood's - The Cafe' at the 'Arcade' back then.
