Co-hosts Michael Rubloff and MrNeRF speak to Wieland Morgenstern about Gaussian Splatting compression and his paper, Self Organizing Gaussians. Self Organizing Gaussians can compress 90% of a .ply and is what Nerfstudio currently uses as their compression method. Thank you so much for this video, there were so many extremely enlighting infos in it :) Regarding rasterization and fields I also think that both don't fit together. However, if rasterization is something that is preferable, the radiation should maybe not be a field but objects that are treated as radiators. In raytracing, the idea has always been to shoot viewing-rays like pythagoras did. What if an object was a neural network that I can ask to radiate the object onto a point in space? (a nice side-effect would be, that a neural network could learn that during training with photos that have been shot in real-world physical constraints, the point is traveling propertional to the distance of the radiation-source)

Hi, thanks for all your hard work on this. Is the are basic walk through tutorial for this for new Houdini users? I am one of the new audience people, just starting with Houdini because of volumetric video stuff, and would like to integrate splats.

@@ViewDependent Ah, thanks for letting us know. A lot of techniques in this field have so much specific terminology it's tricky to follow sometimes. As they say in this conversation, it is so exciting that working with splats is becoming more accessible from their work.

Compression is the hottest topic in GS rn. We are collectively trying to build a unified standard. At least the one of first ones.

This is very exciting work. Houdini is like a magic toolbox, that has built-in wands, but also allows for making your own unique magical devices. I try to promote its virtues whenever I can. Now with the addition of splats there is another wonderful time sink to explore. No idea how people get bored in this modern age with so much at our fingertips. That being said, i was at the beach with my wife the other day watching seabirds feast on a school of fish and was blown away at the terns and pelicans diving again and again following them about. My point is the world is a wonderful place. The digital and the analog. Big thanks for making the digital side of life that much better, guys.

This is an amazing talk! Jonathan, most of the stuff you are talking about I learned the hard way. Now I am taking 500-1000 highest-resolution photos per scene. But still my scenes always have not enougth light... I would really like to learn more and how to capture even better scenes.
