Transforming a suburban lot from grass to an urban permaculture paradise.
I want to inspire other suburbanites to ditch the lawn and plant a fantastic garden. I'm inspired by permaculture, no-dig, and organic gardening, with a touch of cottage gardening sprinkled in for fun.
I'm growing in Langley, BC Canada, Zone 8b (debatable with climate change...closer to 7 recently). First frost around November 2, last frost around March 28.

First frost hits the garden - scrambling to harvest my squash
Просмотров 184Год назад
It seems like out of nowhere the forecast was suddenly calling for frost on October 25 so I scrambled to get the squash harvested after work. The first frost has a special kind of beauty to it...the way it coats all of the plants...not killing them yet, just frosting them with an icy shimmer. Give it a few days though and the garden will be mush. Let's enjoy the beauty while we can. About me: H...

Great to find your videos. You answered my questions.
You’ve inspired me to make one of these beds. My biggest worry is the woods rotting and breaking apart in a couple of years. Should I treat the wood first?
I love that you showed a video of planting fruits trees. I’m in LI and also looking to plant a couple of cherry trees and shrubs of blueberries. Nice video.
I'm very curious to know what your neighbors think and have commented about your lawn transformation into a garden.
Do you know whether the white vinyl fence is yours or your neighbor's? I really like it. You can get each panel for $45-$90 each and complete your fence.
Thanks so much! I didn't get mine planted this year. How do I store the bulbs?
North west Indiana 5b
Hope you've had a good year and you're doing alright.
No they really are evil 😩😱🤨😬😒😤😡
Loved the one year update on your mini meadow. How Is it doing now ?
Chip drop seems like a good prank on your best friend.
Ha ha the infamous Blackberry, took me about 4 years to clear my garden and still have some stubborn ones I missed. The only way to get rid of them is going after the root ball and as much running rots as you can. keep doing that and you will eventually get on top of them. The plus is they make excellent mulch, first through a quiet domestic branch smasher to handle the root ball ( that's the one with a grinding cog wheel in it) then through an ordinary impact shredder which makes a very fine mulch which doesn't grow back, or doesn't seem to. Always the problem in any garden as what do you do with the cuttings etc, but my two shedders are the best things I have ever purchased, dig it, smash it to pieces and back on the garden as mulch, all in the back garden, job done, no fires or trips to the tip and so what enjoyable saying goodbye to a large Blackberry root ball.
Actually ya don’t want these chips because fresh wood chips will pull nutrients out of the soil to feed the bacteria to break down the wood.
What should i do with all the clippings?
Mine are growing under shrubs. Can’t get to roots. Overgrown shrubs with ivy at base.
In addition to chipdrop, I personally called every tree service in the area as well as my local power company, not all arborists sign up for chipdrop. I’ve gotten more chips from a little work on my own than them.
I'm working on a bramble/blackberry problem in my garden in England - being next to a railway cutting doesn't help. My preferred tools are leather gloves, a grubbing hoe to remove the top layer and a mattock for the roots. Rather more physical than your approach 🤣 I'm now down to bare soil and go out on bramble patrol each morning to dig out new sprouts where there are still odd bits of root in the ground.
Daily bramble patrol is what it takes!
Doesnt alway work!
Just say how you got rid of them not all the rest.Keep it simple did you use a weed killer and did it work if not which one Dont need to here all the rest.
Where have you gone?
This is exactly what I hope to get! Oh my, fingers crossed...
Thanks for this information I’m going to do some of this when it cools off and also in the fall
So pretty 😊
It doesn’t look too bad mine are crazy! I can’t get on top of them. I cut them down and they grow right back. Have to get down to the root that’s the only way to get rid of them. ✌🏻
I have the same problem with anxiety. I know it’s not easy i need to start doing my own videos so that way I’m less fearful of just being out on my property gardening. Your garden looks great keep it up I subscribed right away. :)
I didn’t get any chips for a month. When I renewed my request they said my odds would be better if I coughed up some money. Hmm…
You remove Kudzu the same way.
Good overview of their lifecycle. The yard looks great!
How did this go? Current research has lead to recommendation that you do NOT amend soil when planting a tree. Just backfill with native soil removed to dig hole.
They're doing great. At the time it was what the nursery I worked at recommended so I just followed their advice. The asian pear tree is doing great and the cherry is doing ok (it gets hit hard by wind and doesn't like its location so it might not stay there much longer). I've planted 2 more trees since this video without amending the backfill soil and haven't noticed any difference between them and the amended trees. On the newer trees I added compost and mulch to the top around the tree instead of mixing in compost to the backfill soil. Hope that helps.
This was fun to watch, and gets me inspired to get rid of some lawn this way. I like your attitude and the general vibe of this video, and the way you filmed it in fast motion with catchy music. Nice job!
You are motivating me to clean my house. I tend to keep things because I think they my have some future use. The music for this video is perfect.
I signed up for ChipDrop on a Monday and had 10yrds dumped that Wednesday. It took me 5 mornings to move it all into my backyard. Not bad at all. Recommended.
A M A Z I N G ! ! ! Best video on late planting bulbs and showing results I've seen. Thank you!
Not excited about the one you planted very close to the driveway
I see. Bc of bird poops?
@cindy2418 I guess I was worried about the ability of roots to expand in certain directions and then the need for future trimming of branches that are coming low in the driveway.
You are lovely. Thank you so much.
Tomatoes! 😛
I came for a Chip Drop info video, stayed because it's enjoyable how non-contrived the presentation is
Awesome! Good work!
Does you dog chew on them my dog keeps chewing them even though they are spiky
No my dog doesn't chew the blackberries but he does eat my kale plants. Your dog is intense.
DNA.. It's present in every living thing. It tells everything to survive at any cost.
Every year I plant in terracotta pots in October through to January in England to stagger the flowering period. They all come up including the ones planted late January.
That sounds like it's beautiful!
murderer
🤣
Well, well, well, aren't you clever for doing this! I'm seeing the video in the middle of March and I'm in NH, so this is going to be a test and a half :-) It's already spring, so fingers crossed. Nothing ventured, nothing gained right? I was going to plant them anyway, but now I think I have a good chance. In any case, I'll find out.
February ain't spring technically.
Around here we often get spring weather starting in February so it really depends where you live. According to the equinox it's not spring but as we know, gardening and regional climates have nuance 👍
This is my next project. What gloves do you recommend to keep from getting stabbed to death? Thank You!!!
I have thick leather work gloves that work really well. The kind you get from the hardware store.
@@LauraStepney Thank you. These thorns look pretty aggressive. I found the Yardworks gloves that you used in in your video. You didn't seem to be having any problems with the thorns.
I bought a pair from amazon, gardening gloves thornproof extra long.£17.99 they are brilliant. I have a lot of bramble in my large garden, and these gloves have made the job easier. 🏴
@@janclark1894Thank you Jan
Do you have an update? What do the trees look like now?
Put some calendula in your meadow garden here and there, once they get going they reseed. I also work on creating places in my garden to "sit" and enjoy a tea after work, that brings me great joy as I do enjoy gardening. I am also trying for permaculture but it is a work in continuous process. :D Thanks for the video.
Can planter i March
You can try but I'm not sure if you'll get flowers this year or just leaves. But still worth it because bulbs are always better in the ground than in your house. If you live in a colder place you can stretch your planting time a bit later. Where I live in zone 8b the daffodils are starting to bloom now so it's a bit late for those.
