Welcome!
My name is Hubert and I'm a game developer these days. I used to be a modder and I still hope - once my kids grow up - to make some more custom levels for games I loved. I grew up myself making maps for Unreal Tournament (1999). Making a competitive map for Unreal Tournament Pre-Alpha (a.k.a. UT4, 2014-17) helped me to land a job in the video games industry.
This is my private channel only, not intended to produce any kind of vlogs or other targeted content. My videos may be monetized only if I use some copyrighted music, so rights holders can get their money back. Any opinions I share on this channel are my private ones and do not represent any standpoint of my current or past employers.
You may expect to see some video games and works in progress that are related to video games. I make no promises to post on regular basis. I never made a promise to define the nature of this channel and I make no promises to change the nature of this channel in the future.

Update 2025-01-19: Opening more options to play around the armor
The path towards this one was a real struggle taking some serious mental effort for my few remaining brain cells. I made like 8 or 9 versions where I experimented with the left side of that Shock to Rocket Launcher route seen at 0:04.
I wanted to have a new elevator space from down there up to that corner above from which you can attack the armor. Somehow I wanted also to add this extra passage from the top left side of Shock room straight to the new elevator. This route is presented at 2:06 timemark, resulting with the elevator exit taken and landing at the corner mentioned, with a clear view at the armor.
There are some turning inconveniences there where a player needs to decide where to ...

Update 2025-01-11 A new year, a new WIP level!
Просмотров 35221 час назад
A new year, a new map project! I know it sounds like a hopeless case of never finishing stuff, but always starting a new stuff, but I can't help myself, that's what I am :D The aim with this one is to make just a 'fun' map, a bit more open, where you can send those six-packs of rockets blindly and always frag a bunch from a crowd ;) #unrealtournament #ut99 #deathmatch #ffa #freeforall #retrogam...
Update 2024-12-27 Sightlines off the jump to the Mid Connector from the Bottom
Просмотров 18721 день назад
No major changes since the previous update. Few tweaks of the mid connector, also of the new bottom route and the shaft above it. Opened up ceilings in main rooms, added some blue skies and made the ambient lights more blue to reflect this change. This alone changed the vibe a lot, though it's really a small change. It can be seen I compare a few versions between each other to decide on the sit...
Sessions Timelapse: March-August 2024

The following video shows a complete series of in-editor work sessions played back at 16x speed, condensing roughly 23 hours of work into 86 minutes of timelapse. What you’ll see here is how a level's layout begins to take shape in its first hours of creation, though this phase remains incomplete by the end of the video. I decided to record every session after roughly an hour into the developme...
Update 2024-08-08: Expanding the layout and shamelessly having fun!
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.5 месяцев назад
After a few extra touches to the low mid passage I decided it is the time to expand the layout of the level a bit. Ended up kind of bashing pieces of geometry to see if any of them stick and if I get any new satisfying loops. And it's okay, not good, not bad, but okay. Okay enough to show off my lame skills against bots for 20 minutes. Can't wait to iterate more! #ut99 #unrealtournament #deathm...

Update 2024-06-25: Reigniting the work on DM-Reignition
Просмотров 176 месяцев назад
Having the forced break hopefully behind me, I sat down with the map to see where I left things 6 weeks ago. My mindset, all the focus and next-step thoughts have gone, so I needed to build new ones. I feel this one misses my voiced over commentart, maybe even more than any of the previous videos, and made an attempt and gathered some thoughts, but making a heavy edited video is beyond me. Update 2024-05-12: Endless iterations and feel checks
Просмотров 278 месяцев назад
I admit this update video is not really what I planned to do. First off, I've been busy at work and my older kid was sick and stayed at home, so my chances to get anywhere near my PC were close to zero. However, I still managed to find an hour or two this week to iterate what I would call a "Rocket Launcher Room" for now. Item placement is really whatever for now, so please don't even pay atten...
Update 2024-05-03: Ghosting and shooting!
Просмотров 388 месяцев назад
Today's video doesn't show much of progress. Despite a few vacation days this week, I've been busy with kids and barely spent 1 hour of work on the map. To keep positive vibes going, for today's weekly video I wanted to show how existing rooms connect and affect each other. It's not easy to make fun spaces when trying to keep the geometry correct architecture-wise at the same time. I wanted to ...
Update 2024-04-27: Detailing and tweaking; 16 hours on clock!
Просмотров 228 месяцев назад
One month since I've started and here we are! Truth be told the total work time clocked exactly 16 hours. It's much, and not much at the same time, depending on who you ask, what your goals are and what's the project's reality. Here, it's my hobby project, so I don't care much and for roughly 2 days of work, I'm pretty happy where I am, which does not mean I'm happy with how all areas function ...
Update 2024-04-17: Bad decisions?
Просмотров 249 месяцев назад
I though I have a cool idea to rebuild the second room with an addition of a starcaise of sorts and... it didn't really work well. Looks bad, feels bad, seems sluggish. That's why it's super important to playtest immediately and not let a faulty change settle in and initiate a cascade of issues. It is still worth some thinking and tinkering around. Can the idea be defended anyhow? Or maybe it's...
Update 2024-04-12: WIP iteration and some bot action on a New Custom Map for Unreal Tournament
Просмотров 289 месяцев назад
Here comes the third video update of my map for a classic arena shooter, Unreal Tournament (1999). I hope these weekly updates become a tradition. It's definitely not an impressive progress as I was mostly tweaking what I had done - changing distances, sightlines and some shapes to improve the fairness, flow and feel of combat spaces. Recorded also some shooting against a bot to see how combat ...
Update 2024-04-06: Feel check of a New Custom Map for Unreal Tournament (1999)
Просмотров 399 месяцев назад
With my limited time to work on this, I made a few touches here and there to expand areas a bit. The video shows me checking out the moderate progress I made, with me paying attention to overall feel of the map, so how it feels to navigate and move around, are distances ok, are sightlines blocked enough where I want them, do areas have enough of space to 'breathe', etc. Necessary changes incomi...
Update 2024-03-29: Scale Test of a New Custom Map for Unreal Tournament (1999)

This is a very first recorded playtest of my new work in progress I started on 2024-03-24. What you see here is a birth of a new custom map for Unreal Tournament (1999). To be honest with you, this is one of many maps started by me and I cannot guarantee I will ever finish this one. Let's keep fingers crossed though!

Keep up the good work
Your video was randomly recommended to me, long time since I played my last UT match, but props for sticking with the game and still making new maps, love the dedication. Good luck with the project, looks good!
I don't know this game neither you but GL mate
Thx mate! Luck is always needed :D
Aaaw man. That's a nostalgia trip and a half, the sounds etc... back in around 2009 I would play this all the time with Neon genesis evangelion music playing in the background. I didn't have internet or a great PC so it was all I had... good times
Happy to see some people keeping the torch lit.
I feel the excitment but over 8 minutes for just one mapped room is too much xD What's in the pipeline?
You're probably right it's too much :D That's because I don't edit these videos and also they're not meant to be a showcase of visuals. What I do with these series of videos usually is trying to capture the feel of newly edited geometry, to check the sightlines, distances, overall gameplay potential. Quite often it is the very first jump into the game from the editor where I playtest stuff for the very first time, so I may spend too much time repeating same movements or staring at one spot observing and thinking. I am aware this may be painful to watch, but I assumed everyone is invited to do the same along watching the video - if only they find it interesting or maybe they have an interest in multiplayer level design and this kind of stuff inspires them. I don't blame anyone for quitting after 10 seconds, it is ok :D For the pipeline itself, it's just about documenting the process of me iterating on a level. It's always cool to look back at past videos. It also allows me to make a decent documentary if I ever finish and release the map. And this map in particular is going to be this open spaced 4-5 chambers interconnected with each other with lots of verticality. It's not really planned, it's more about spontaneous iterations.
I would suggest adding a pillar in the middle of the open area, to allow jumping over from one "balcony" to another. :D
Thanks for your suggestion. It's a valid point! For the record, you can do that jump both ways already - you only need to know how :D A pillar is still worth to consider as it may provide extra cover. We will see - the distance between 'balconies' is not set in stone yet. I may need to move the orange-lit balcony to hide it in between existing pillars, so it's not so exposed to fire from all around. This would increase the distance significantly and would force me to place something in the middle of that open area.
@@CharonPL Additionally, there could be some one of powe-ups on the pillar, making the arena below even more central point.
Hey nice job. It looks like you got inspiration from Quake's level design. :)
Can't deny it :D I used to spend whole days browsing stuff at LvL website, though I was never a Quake player! I always admired level design in all Quakes for readability, simplicity at times and most of all - control over the layout's flow and sightlines. Never liked teleporters too much :D Cheers!
props to the level design!
Where can you buy this game now? I see it’s not on steam anymore 😢
it's free on google
I wouldn't go as far as claiming this game is free now, but the reality is many people assumed it's classified as abandonware since Epic delisted entire Unreal and Unreal Tournament franchises from all digital stores and disabled their master servers. Sadly, there's no way to obtain the game in a legal way other than getting some extremely overpriced digital keys or retail copies. No matter how awful it looks from Epic's end, I still hope they're up for something special on the game's 25th Release Anniversary on November and I hope including the game in the upcoming Secret Level show from Amazon Prime is not a one-off gig.
I like the layout, but I'd have to play it with you to see if it's fun!
Thank you! The layout is not completed yet, I would say 60% is defined. Many iterations to come on what's "done". There's no area for a shieldbelt and I need to make sure there's enough locations to place all weapons.
Из-за того, что гайды по Unreal Engine часто помечают как видео по Unreal 1998, иногда мне в рекомендациях попадаются видео по Unreal: Tournament 1999. А я и не против! Отличная игра, хоть я и играл в неё довольно мало.
That's why I started to use hashtags, so people can take a quick look to see it's UT99 without even paying too much of an attention to read through the whole description :D
Dude, how do you make it work without mouse lag and with the right screen ratio? i wish i could play this since win 7 and never could make it since them.
grab the OldUnreal community patch. it fixes all of that
I keep the same config around for over 15 years by now and I never had issues running the game on Windows 7. I have some small issues now when running on Windows 11, but I'm still generally impressed by how both the game and the editor function on modern operating systems and hardware. My UT99 installation is based on 436 patch, so pretty much the default you would get from digital stores when the game was still available to buy. The only thing different from retail that I keep is a custom renderer, D3D9Drv by Chris Dohnal. I keep the same installation around for almost 20 years and it serves me well on a third operating system (XP -> 7 -> 11). Of course, getting the OldUnreal's patch 469d should solve any issues on modern hardware/software, but I never had a need to get it installed. Be aware it replaces UnrealEd 2.0 with unofficial version 2.2 delivered by some amazing community members. www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/ unrealarchive.org/unreal-tournament/patches-updates/patches/patch-469d/index.html
Neat, haven't messed around with the Unreal Ed in a while, kind of curious how to get the Editor working in windows 10/11.
Simply run UnrealEd.exe and you're good to go! I run it in Windows 11, not even using a compatibility mode. Editor runs fine with software rendering. I noticed 2 small issues: 1) mouse input somehow performs a 'jump' across the screen every 2-3 minutes, so you may get your stuff moved in an undesired way; 2) the editor seems to not be able to update its config files, so stuff like viewports layout or a list of recently opened maps will not get saved properly (running as admin doesn't help).
@@CharonPL The mouse jumping isn't a small issue imo. It is extremely annoying when working on high detail maps. I recommend getting the latest patch since it incorporates Unreal's 227 UEd2.2 and fixes those issues.
A bit too open for my taste! Open = quite aim-based. More closed = you can generate a wider variety of distance situations more easily.
Thanks so much for the comment! My reply for now is "anything you see may be a subject to change". This one will not get as tight as Turbine, but closer to Agony let's say. Ideally I would love to achieve a balanced mix of half-opened and a bit tighter areas. We'll see, I try my best to not get attached to anything and I take decisions while recording these videos. I pay a lot of attention to sightlines and covers, but may introduce some naive things too and get them corrected with further iterations.
No jumppads?
There are 2 actually - marked by an animated texture with red arrows on it. See 0:26 or 1:49 for references.
I really like the brushwork and style of this level 😁 Would you mind to share it after all those years? It's sad you didn't release it after all that hard work you put into it!
Hello, could you possibly re-upload this map somewhere? I'd like to test it out :)
awesome close game guys nice skills
For 6div yes xD
@lacacaesgrande I still have one of latest versions, so I could upload it somewhere. I didn't want to publish this map because its development got stuck due to geometry errors and myself being sick about fixing them. It is unfinished in parts not visible on videos. I returned to UnrealEd recently and I'm gonna give this map the last chance. Until then, my answer is 'no'. I would recommend you my other map instead, DM-Cobalt: cued.pl/cued/ftp/pliki/mapy_ut/konkurs/DM-Cobalt.zip
