I love seeing matte black with gloss black emblems and door handles, trim etc.
Always a clean look!
Keep going you’ll get it
Thanks! I look forward to getting it back on the road!
The roof and those pieces are fucked up because you were yanking on them when you’re taking apart your bugger
They would be better if you would describe what you do instead of the music
Thanks for the feedback! I did that on a few videos, then stopped for a few videos. However, I've got enough feedback requesting this that I will do my best to voice over all videos going forward.
This also has to be tough since the roof frame was bent and probably not exactly 100%... guess gonna have to use line of site to the doors and make it work. Great video keep it up.
I plan on getting a 3D scanner by the end of the year to do some wide body stuff in the future. Scanning the car should give me a good idea how badly I lined everything up lol.
I would build the whole car and either use klecos or screws and get everything perfect then take it all apart and clean your metal for welding and start building the puzzle again and welding The screws will help you put it back in the same place again
I definitely didn't clean the metal as well as I should have during the process. Lesson learned on this one. I do like the sheet metal screw idea! The klecos have worked out well too.
Don’t be afraid to use self tapping screws to hold your panels together. Best way to learn how to weld is to practice. Practice. Practice. Gotta say though. Takes some balls to cut your car that far apart. I’ll be doing the same project this summer to my 71. Subscribed and can’t wait to see how it turns out for ya.
It took a lot of building myself up to cut that far lol. I'm happy I did though. Things were worse than I originally thought. What are your plans for your 71?
David, keep up the great work. I’m amazed at your ambition and dedication to this project. I’m more of a mechanic than a bodyworker, so I’m trying to soak in all I can to finish my 72 SS Chevelle. I also like the way your format is progressing. Kudos, Chuck
I'm not a huge fan of bodywork myself lol. But the work needed done, so something new to learn!
Nice.
Chevelle's rule, especially with a big BLOCK!!😊
My Dad had a big block 72, that's what lead me to get my 72. His car scared the hell outta me as a kid though lol.
Great videos.. still would rather hear you talk through your process than the music. It gets a bit annoying. Otherwise, keep at it looking good.
Thanks for the feedback!
You’re going to want the windows to check panel fitment.
I didn't do that... I probably should have. I do plan on flush mounting the windows though. So I have to do custom sheet metal work around both front and back. Then pray the side windows fit right lol.
E-Vap-O-Rust in a spray bottle dude. Wire wheel will not solve anything! SMH....
Its just surface rust, wire took a majority off, and reformer will prevent it from coming back.
Amazing!! Subscribed and following! Keep up the Awesome work!! :)
Thank you! Glad you are enjoying the channel!
Rebuild your door hinges as necessary to get consistent gaps also you might mock up the front sheet metal to check and align the front door gap and to align any body lines. Also I use self tappers to hold panels in place, I find that clamps get in the way of fitting multiple panels. Take your time you will be fine. Good luck
I really contemplated placing the front fenders when I hung the doors to gap the quarters. With the way everything is fitting, I'm just excepting that at some point I will need to do more intensive custom work. That is if I want her perfect.
how big is your shop? do you like the OSB walls? I just built a 28x28 and am trying to decide how to finish it out.
My shop is 28x32 and so far I really like the OSB. It's definitely not fancy lol but it does the job.
Hang your doors, align the door pullers/quarters to the doors. Align the roof from front to back and with the quarters. Pop on the trunk lid, adjust quarters and deck filler, then the tail panels to the trunk and quarters. Tekscrews are your friend.
Pretty close to what I did! Was a ton of adjusting, measuring, then just goin for it lol.
Stopping the rust was the most important thing.😊
Now it’s time to assemble the puzzle. Remember to build from the rear to the front to make sure to get all your gaps where they need to be.
That paint works great. I use it myself.
Good to know! This was my first time using it.
Fix your Playlist it works backwards
I think I fixed it. Let me know if it worked on your end.
Matte finish on the car!?! NICE, always loved that look! Enjoying the vids.
I've always been a matte finish fan boy lol. I've been tossing around the idea of satin, but only time will tell.
Videos are great, keep talking while working or after working. I don't know why but when a video has been narrated over it tends to loose all the original flair. Enjoying watching your work, still looking for my 69.
Thanks for the feedback! I think its gonna take me a bit to find the medium that works.
Mr Rudd, sorry but I haven’t caught your first name in any of your Chevelle videos. I have a ‘72 SS myself since I was 15. Now I’m 58, still have that car, and am trying to get the ambition to make it into a resto-mod. Mine doesn’t need anywhere near the bodywork like yours, but I’m enjoying watching your series. BTW, I recommend you find a happy medium between the voice-overs and the music. I would start with the voice intentions, music through the work scenes, and end with describing what went right/wrong/changes. Question: were you ever on the Fast & Loud TV show? Thanks, -Chuck
Thanks for the feedback! It will definitely take me a bit to figure out an even medium for how I want my videos to flow. It's an art form, I just need to gradually dial it in. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the series! It's been fun challenging myself and reviving my poor Chevelle. Also, sadly I was never on Fast & Loud... It will be a long time before I have any name in the car game.
@ You’re a very ambitious person and I have no doubt that you’ll be a great videographer. If you up the good work, I promise to keep watching! One more recommendation from me - give that darn frame a coat of Chassis-Black white it’s out in the open and easily accessible! (I still don’t know your first name) -Chuck
@chuckfrank4586 I will pull the body off the frame at some point to give it a proper cleaning and paint. First name is David btw.
@ 👍 Thanks David.
I meant to say “If you KEEP up the good work,….”
Just went threw that entire process on mine, lots of work but worth it in the end.
It's a ton of work! Really rewarding as things start coming together tho.
*they're always ... **_"1 - Step Away"_** hahahaha LOL*
I wish you luck on your project. I'm currently doing a 71 and I know the work that is ahead of you.
What are your plans for your 71?
Just doing/done the bodywork and paint on it and fitted a BBC with 700r4 in it. Just started on the interior. Replaced old sweep dash with an SS style and going from bench to buckets.
Interested in seeing the rebuild after this tear down.
It's been fun so far!
If you would talk a little you have a good channel
I'll be ordering a mic within the next week. So I should have talking during my work after a few more videos.
Can't screw up what is already screwed up.. lol.
Lol fair point
I wondered if you had cut the frame structure of the roof. While looking for another 69 I found one locally that they not cut both roof pillars, they cut all away across the roof and frame structure. Needless to say for the work needed and what they asked for it it didn't end up in my shop. One day I will find my 6t9.
Yea, I could tell where the sheet metal separated and got a little excited. Nothing that can't be fixed thankfully!
14:22 Some who understands that you learn as you go-along, regardless of mistakes that you can fix, with not wishful talking on how you are going to do everything, and 4 years later not done anything, Like they usually do on youtube!
Can't learn without starting lol. I'm just figuring it out as I go. Hopefully, you enjoy the content!
You also should reinstall, set the gaps on the doors and trunk lid even before any tack welding of your 1/4 panels. But even before any of that you need to sort out the damaged rear right and left inner sail panel supports and brackets. Another thing is replacing the rear package shelf under the back window and setting the deck lid hinges/springs/and outer panel when doing the inner sail panel / 1/4 panel supports. 9:51 9:51 Gotta set all your gaps as well. Cheers
You basically listed all the steps I took! You'll have to let me know what you think as the content rolls out.
If new replacement inner supports aren’t available, go and repurpose the damaged rear inner sail panel components from another chevelle that’s not damaged and after straightening the existing crushed ones best possible with an Autobody porta power hydraulic jacking ram ,before replacing the damaged parts with the new or used ( repurposed ) parts. Good luck and cheers
That's next week's video! All of the work up to this point was prepping to fix the inner structure. I got it fixed to the best of my current ability.
Keep posting videos. I am doing a 71 Chevelle with all the same rust issues. Seeing your efforts, is like a walk through talk through before attacking my areas of rust. Thanks.
Glad it's helpful! I've got at least a dozen more videos recorded and ready for editing. I kind of took the extreme route of rust repair lol.
My recommendation is to do one part at a time
If the inner structure wasn't so damaged, one part at a time would have been nice.
I would rather hear you talk about the project than the music. I would clean up the metal before putting anything on it to seal it.
I'll need to figure out a mic setup, it's definitely my plan for the future. I did take a wire wheel to everything I had access to before throwing paint on it.
Dang for $500, you got a deal. I remember the day we could get a car with hardly any rust for that. One day, maybe I will find another 69. Keep at it.. i know videos making is hard but will be worth the documentation.
I was 14 when I bought it and didn't realize just how much rust there was. The more I cut the more I seemed to find sadly. I'd be happy with even rusty ones being $500 still lol.
My best piece of advice is stop using that flap disk. You are making the thin metal even thinner and harder to weld back together. Use a wire wheel to clean the rust off the joints to expose the spot welds and be able to see the layers of the panels. This will make it easier to see how all your panels overlap and how to separate them. Even with POR 15, you will need to get as much of the loose rust off the metal by wire wheeling, sanding, or by use of a wire brush first. Also, please do yourself a favor and wear proper PPE when working on projects like this. When using wire wheels, grinding, cutting welding, etc., wear long pants and sleeves, leather gloves, along with safety glasses and a face shield. The eye protection is cheap insurance against an expensive ER bill because you got some metal in your eye. Hearing protection is a must as well, unless you just don't care about your hearing. The rest is to protect yourself from being cut or burnt. Start buying the vice grip welding clamps in various sizes and styles. Harbor freight has them for cheap, and you will need a lot of them. Continue to search RUclips for as much information as you can about the work you are planning. Don't just search your vehicle but watch others doing full restoration jobs. One channel I would recommend is Foothill Paint and Fabrication. He has two playlists covering a '67 GTO and a '65 Malibu in great detail. Granted, he goes all out to do the job right the first time, but it's the processes that will help you out on your project. Another channel I would recommend is Paintucation by Kevin Tetz. He is doing a Resto Mod of a '74 Camaro LT and converting it to a '70 RS clone. My '72 Chevelle is stripped down to bare metal and just the skeleton right now. I'm in the process of paint prep to sand and treat the metal before spraying epoxy primer. My project was a frame off, and I'm finishing up year 2. I have a goal to be road worthy and drive cross country from San Diego, Ca. to Jacksonville, Fl. by June 2025. A huge task to accomplish in about 6 months. I'll keep following you to see how you progress and lend some advice from time to time.
Thanks for taking the time to give so much advice! I'm gradually getting better with PPE, but can definitely improve a ton! The flap disk has definitely caused me a few issues, I did however wire wheel as much rust as I could reach. I find myself rushing this project more than I should be. It's a massive undertaking and a ton to learn rather quickly. Thanks for the channel recommendations! I'm constantly finding channels to learn from, so its great to have new ones pointed out. Thanks again for watching and giving advice!
just found your channel.. please keep up the video's.
I do my best to out out a video every Wednesday at 10am. Schedule may change, but I want to stick to at least 1 video every week.
Just a quick note. The quarter panels should be under the roof lip at the top of the sail panel. Also, make sure to hang the doors and set gaps as best as possible before burning those quartes in. Lots of frustrating adjustments will be needed. Nice work, keep it up.
Thanks! A friend pointed out the same about the roof lol. It all fell into place once I swapped that. Door adjustments are always fun, especially hanging them solo.
Like your channel. Only thing I'd recommend is hitting the rust on the inner parts with a wire wheel before covering/converting. That kind of surface rust can hide pinholes - a lot of pinholes. As it's structural I'd wirewheel it enough to be confident it wasn't compromised. Dont need to get it shiny new but clean it off on both sides should reveal any holes.
I think I hit pretty much anywhere I could reach with the wire wheel. This poor car is just covered in rust.
rust convert before you por15?
I ended up just using the rust convert. My goal is to seal up the car better than it ever was. Then interior and exterior will get properly painted as well.
Save your money 💰
I guess you're ruined a car😮
Obviously you never did that before. Because there's a lot more Is wellsHolding that thing on, but I'll let you figure it out.
You should check out my Instagram, you may be surprised.
Where is this car originally from? It is extremely Rusty. I live in Ontario Canada and I have a 72 Chevelle that was built in Oshawa and I have been restoring it. And it was not even close to that Rusty at all.
It spent the first half of it's life in Seattle. It has been this rusty since I bought it in the early 2000s sadly. Previous owners did some sketchy work which trapped moisture and increased rust.
Keep on keepin on.
Lot of work went through all that Good Luck
Thank you! It's one hell of a process.
Hope your a great welder. You need a straight starting point. Stop talking it a part. Start fitting the new together.
I'm definitely not a good welder lol. The reason for all the cutting is creating a straight starting point. The inner structure is crunched and needed repaired.
What on the back half of this car looks like it’s straight? And it looks like it has already been half repaired previously. So what could possibly be trusted to be straight?
