Pay what you can for art supplies?

Hi friends! Have you heard of thrift shopping for art supplies? I recently learned about Propagate Studios where they have a pay for what you can art supply store. The owner, Sam Mathews, was incredibly generous with her time to give us a full studio tour, as well as a sit down interview about how the space came to be. There are so many gems in here, whether you are interested in finding cheap ...

How do you think I did? Can you give me advice? lol! I hope you enjoy the journey in this one - I'll see you next week for another vlog! Until then, stay well and stay inspired, friends! Artist Studio Makeover
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Месяц назад
Hi friends! I took some time this summer to make over my artist studio! It was a lot of effort, but I'm happy with how it came out. I've been referring to it as the "Pink Palace" now lol But I feel more productive being in an "official" studio space again instead of treating it as something makeshift. What do you think? I'd love to hear from you! Stay well & stay inspired, friends! SHOP MY ART:...

A quick trip to Toronto
Просмотров 555Месяц назад
Hi friends! I took a short weekend trip to Toronto to visit my darling friend, Maria, at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. It was also my first time in the city, so I got to spend a bit of time wandering. I was very tired throughout this one as I'm sure you'll be able to see lol But I enjoyed it regardless! I feel like I will definitely return to Toronto in the future to explore more. Have you ever...

Hi friends! I VISITED THE LARGEST ART SUPPLY STORE IN AMERICA!! Did you know it's in Buffalo, NY? I googled this 2 years ago and I've always had it percolating in the back of my mind that if I'm ever passing by in the area, I'd make it a point to stop by. Well, that opportunity came up because I took a long weekend trip to Toronto :) The space was really cool with a wide array of supplies. The ...

@@FionaCArt yes! What you said!!!
What paint do you use or recommend for outdoor murals?
Exterior house paint! Depends on the surface which type but if you go to your local paint shop and describe the surface they will point you in the right direction:)
This place looks amazing!
It truly is!! Thank you for watching :)
i thrifted some doll heads and hands a while back, put the hands on the ends of a claw extension grabber thing i had and use it to creep out house guests lol i like making them clap
😂🤣😂🤣 love the investment and effort from you on that lol
Love❤
Thanks for watching :)
Her store looks amazing. You didn't talk about becoming a non-profit, and I wondered about that since all the thrift stores I know about are non-profit. It would be great to hear from her on that topic (both pros and cons), thanks!
Hey there! Thanks for watching :) You are right that we didn’t discuss that, but if I’m being honest I don’t believe it’s a non-profit model she has since the studio does workshops, makers markets and other things. I could be wrong though! I’ll definitely ask her next time we connect :)
Wow...loved this! really great concept behind the shop and how much the owner has persevered in keeping the shop going is inspiring. Loved her. Thank you for sharing with us and it is so wonderful how open heartedly you support people making art and doing art accessible. i appreciate that a lot🌻❤
It’s so cool right?! I just knew when I learned about this business that I had to share it with y’all :) makes me so happy to hear you loved watching it :) Thank you for being here!
I so enjoy your content as you have a calm and serene vibe. Love how you talk thru your thinking process for setting up your space...it gives helpful ideas to those of us who dream about having a dedicated art studio such as yours. Perfect color choice. One can never go wrong with pink! I like the name Pink Poppy Art Studio 💗
So cute - pink poppy art studio 💕 Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave such a sweet comment :) As someone who has had many a manner of studio spaces, just keep making no matter what space you have! Big hugs!!
Wow! What a great idea~ I hope she does really well.
I agree 🥰 thanks for watching!!
I'm so excited to watch!!! thanks for the upload!!!
I hope you enjoy it :)
Very different from my local place, but I love it! What a welcoming, positive space!!
You have an art thrift nearby you? :) tell us about it!
This made me sooo very happy! You did a great job with the interview & Sam is just wonderful & I want to magically be transported to NJ to be art friends with all of yall!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it :) Sam is a serious creative queen - it was so fun to interview her! Sam does do online courses if you are ever interested to see more of her and be a part of that art friend community :) And of course, you’re always welcome here, my friend!
Great video! Great idea for a shop!!
Thank you, Barbara :) Glad you enjoyed it! Isn’t an art thrift store such a smart idea?! I love it!!
@@FionaCArtawesome idea! It’s an hour from my Moms 😊
Yesssss! :) love that!
Wowowowowoww!!!! This place is soooo coooool! Every city should have an art supply thrift store!!!!
I agree!!! Thanks for watching and sharing the video, darling :)
TGIF Fiona! I loved this concept.. Its so refreshing to see a business not entirely "money" driven and trying to be more accessible. I hope more people will start up things like this, it is a wonderful idea and I am so happy that people are honest with her with pricing and donating. Its always good to hear that there are actually good people out there <3 good for her and I hope she is forever successful!
Thank you for being here as always, Kate - TGIF!! :) I had all the same thoughts when I learned about her business - she has such a generous, creative spirit and I knew I had to share her with the community here! 🥰🥰🥰
What a beautiful, vibrant soul she is! And her Arts Venue looks amazing 🤩 Thank you for taking us along Fiona. I’d love to have somewhere like that near where I live North West UK 🇬🇧
Thank you so much for watching, Wendy! :) I had never heard of an art thrift before so when I learned about propagate, I knew I had to share it with as many fellow artists as possible! With that said, Sam has online courses so if you are interested to see more from her, you can check those out on her website :) she even teaches others open their own art thrift, so maybe you can be the one to bring it to the UK ;)
Loving the new mics, the amazing interview at the end and dang this is such a cool creative space!!! Love to see y’all bringing more art into the world!🫶🙌💪
Thank you so much :) The mics are a learning experience lolll
I also noticed the mic’s! ❤
@@mariadoering_ Trying to up my game!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Noice!!! Love the art thrifting element here!!! Soooo creative and resourceful!!!
It’s truly an amazing space!! Thanks for watching :)
You did amazing! I took ceramics to finish up my credits for my degree. It was fun but I never did it after 😊
I've never formally studied ceramics, but I have my mother and RUclips to learn from :) Thanks for the sweet comment and for watching, Barbara!
@@FionaCArt you did amazing and it was so heartwarming seeing you and your mom working together ❤
@barbarabrady1267 she’s the best 🥰❤️ thank you!!
You seemed to have been making a rather large vessel. It would help to let the lower layer "sit up" for awhile and then continue working when it is firmer. You can not let dry too much. Cover it loosely with plastic wrap and then continue. It may take days. I assume you were slipping and scoring between layers. I study ceramics at Rutgers and was an Art Teacher after that. It still might crack at the seams, but it is the nature of the best. The extruder someone mentioned would make your coils more consistent.
This is all such great advice, Donna - thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! :)
Your clay creations are really cool! I’m excited to see how you glaze them and what they look like once they’re done!
Thank you :) I hope to glaze them in October!
Coil building is where it's at.
Yessss! :) I’m hooked! Gonna keep at it!
Nice job. Thank you for showing the entire learning process! Also, I need the chicken recipe please. That looks amazing!
Thanks for watching :) shoot me an email at fionac.nyc @ gmail.com and I’ll reply with the recipe! I screenshotted it ages ago off the times website lollll
Your determination and "keep trying until you create what you know you will" approach has always inspired me and i literally think of you when i am about to give up. I really loved the look of sculptures, so looking forward to glazing. I had never heard of coil building before and like all pottery looks so easy on screen😅 but i am so glad you put up footages of things not going to the plan or holding up definitely helps me. I really learn a lot when shown what can go wrong as i always forget to think of that. Thank you so much. Mum is so cute🥺❤️ supporting you always n holding that piece before firing. I can't become a member at the moment but i love seeing what you may post and get excited for friday🎉
Thank you so much for the lovely comment and for always watching ❤️ Know that having you here means a lot and no pressure about the membership please! I’m glad to hear you think of me when you are about to give up and what I say may give you a wee extra push because I BELIEVE IN YOU!! The world deserves to see your unique creative gifts, friend - never forget that!
