Ford Prototype Twin Turbo Modular Motor Barn Find: Supposed to be Crushed-Crazy OEM Intake Manifold. It was hiding for 20- years when we found it!
Most prototypes are crushed, but this one somehow survived! This factory twin turbo four valve modular was built in the late 90s and is packed with all kinds of things way ahead of it's time, like one of the craziest OEM intake manifolds we've ever seen, a set of twins and come fabrication work that was advanced for 1998! Was this a prototype for the Terminator Cobras? Was this the precursor to the EcoBoost?

    How much power did this old Flatty make? Love these old engines. Don't even have the heart to talk about how i recently lost my 1950 Ford daily driver with its original 8ba flathead. Been a flathead lover for pretty much all of my 55 years and can't wait to do a 59a motor someday. My goal has always been a 200+ hp flatty then drive the wheels off of whatever the engine falls into.

      Me too, love these Flatheads! Nothing sounds quite like them, especially one with some good cam and compression! I'm not sure on the power, but I'll ask East Bay Speed and Custom about it. Motor will be installed in the car soon! Sorry to hear about your '50 Ford. Hope you can get another!

      It runs good for a pump-gas small block. Full roller motor, decent cam and heads. Exhaust is longtubes into a custom X-pipe and I think some Flowmasters that he’s gonna swap for some straight-through mufflers soon.

      No, I've never bought one. I was looking a R Design version in 2013. Time has passed 😁. Today I'd love to get a T5 but it's almost impossible to find in France. I find this C30 as attractive as ever. Otherwise, why not a V40! 🙄

    What rear gears are you running and are you still on the t5 trans or a different transmission?

      Originally I had 3.73s but because I wanted to run 28x10.5 slicks at the track I ended up going with a 4.10 rear gear. I pulled the stock, tired T5 and replaced with with a mildly built G-Force T5 and then ultimately went with a Tremec Magnum with the 2.66 First. I like the close ratio gears, but the 2.66 first was tall with the 28-inch slicks, making it harder to launch. It was either bogging or spinning and I had to drop the clutch around 5000-5500 RPM to get it to come out hard. Had I kept that combo I'd either try 26-inch tall slicks or move to 4.56 or even 4.88 gears to help with the taller First gear. That said, on the street I really liked the 2.66-First Tremec Magnum and 4.10 rear gear combo.

      I was always pretty careful not to make a bunch of back to back runs or really beat on it when the ambient temps were hot. That said, I never ran into detonation issues even on 91-octane. I added a phenolic spacer between the upper and lower intakes and would add 5 gallons of 100 octane for added security whenever we'd hit the track, but that was pretty much it. I knew if I drove the car more regularly on the street that I should do something about managing the intake temps whether that be water/meth, intercooler or even a swap to E85 would have at least helped with detonation resistance but not necessarily the intake charge. As for coolant temps, I just used the large CHP radiator, a FoMoCo water pump, electric fans and a 180 thermostat and that seemed to do well. I think had I ran it harder more consistently I would have looked into heat extractors for the hood to try and get the engine bay temps down, if nothing more than for good measure.

Also, what car its going in or at least what it weights, what sorta tire you're gonna run (how much traction) and how you intend on using it (drag racing, cruising, etc.) That'd give me a better idea of what sorta octane you might need.

      Tuner said typically another 50ish horsepower. Tuner mentioned that combo typically nets high 700s on his dyno.

      Stay tuned for some update videos soon. We swapped just the rear gears and went even faster! But yeah, we went 11.40s with much more potential left, even without adding any additional power, just optimizing the setup!
