The Compaq Presario 5600: the high end last of the 90s PCs you never heard of...and is hard to find
The Compaq Presario 5600 is one of the harder to find systems being that the 5200 and 5100 that was sold along side them offered a quite compelling package making the 5600s added drive bays and more interior room for mostly a non PC educated public a hard sell. These are some of the hardest to find vintage Compaqs I have encountered! Come along with me for a tour of the 5600 and the few issues with my unit, and hopefully another one to materialize so I can have a mint 5600 tower!

The Compaq Presario 4834 Parting out: The Downside to having vintage PCs you have to part rob others

Hey my little Microchips! First thank you for watching! This one is a little different! Parting out a abused 4834 without a door 2 make 2 other PC functional. Its the unfortunate downside to things being proprietary in some ways in the 90s (and 2000s) but nessicary. Some time you gotta sacrifice one to make to work, so this is me parting the machine out. I had one of these. It was a K6-II at 450mhz with 96mb ram and a 20gb Quantum Bigfoot HDD and a bizarre combo DSL/POTS modem. I got it in 99 to play Everquest and had to get a discrete GPU almost immediately (Riva TNT) because the built in Rage chip was terrible.

    I love this era of compaq, I used to work in a data processing department for a software company. I had 10 of the 5000 series with a P2 233 I would run scripts on and ... wait. I have a 5037 in my inventory.

    A few things to note here. An "ATX form" board with AT power connectors rather than ATX. AGP slot in a different place from the Intel reference design. 10Mbit Ethernet when cards were mostly 10/100Mbit in the Pentium II era. It has a later Pentium II badge without the chrome effect which goes along with it having Windows 98. The Pentium II 333 was replaced by the 350 that year. I think that could be an Adaptec Firewire controller on the board - possibly used with the optional Compaq Digital Flat Panel display??

    It looks pretty good! I'm envious - i've been working on a Presario 7482 (AMD K6-2), and the 5600 looks like a much better option in many respects: easier access to the internals, much better laid out internals, more expansion slot types... Thanks for the video, it's great to take a look back at the options of the time! :D

    I'm trying find my old presario, and maybe you know what it was. I thought it was a 4800 series unit, beige, with a sliding tray drive and the door. RCA A/V jacks near the top of the front. But I swear it had a Pentium 1 233mhz in it, not a P2. I believe the system was originally bought in Australia. I received it in 1998 or 1999 from an Aussie friend when their business upgraded. I think it had a 6gb hard drive maybe? I built an athlon XP system after moving, probably around fall of 2001, and got rid of the presario. Now I want it back lol Does any of this sound right?

    • @nickdoestechstuff
      @nickdoestechstuff 12 дней назад

      Hey! Sorry I didnt realize I had notifications off and wasnt seeing replies! They made these beige units all the way up to the 4840 where they changed them to jet black so a 4814 is probably what you had they had the tray instead of a slot drive! I actually have 3 now 4 of these and Im going to be selling them off, feel free to shoot me a message on IG if youd like! Always love chatting its Yougotniiick. They did offer most of the USA models in AUS Id bet its a 4814. I have a 4834 thats a P1 and the rest are P2 4824s or up.

    bought the 4550 in 1997 working in the software industry as online dial up was just coming in for the consumer. late to the game in my mid 30,s it was my first PC purchase for home to complement my slow 385 work PC. Unit came in a box with monitor and two passive speakers and a startup disk at about 1800.00. The company discount cut my price in half. Running windows 95 in those days everything was plug and play. Compaq and Dell the to major server companies where moving into the home PC market at the time while HP was still making flatbed scanners. when something went wrong or there was a fatal crash you just popped the OS startup disk in and start from scratch. Not a bad unit for its time

    • @nickdoestechstuff
      @nickdoestechstuff 11 дней назад

      That must have been so different to use one for work, and then to be able to enjoy it having drivers and not popping a cd in for anything and everything that you got extra for a system. Dell and Compaq had many servers and I was surprised how much business stuff they made. It was for sure a thing if you had a scanner it was a flat bed and an HP and more then likely an HP deskjet printer in witch you'd put the paper in the wrong way because it sucked it in and printed stuff upside down!

      @nickdoestechstuff Oh really!? I have been wondering if that would work but wasn't sure about matching the output since compaq also didn't use standard wire colors for output on the original PSUs or label the wires (ugh). I have added one to a past unit! I will say it’s picky about it but the one I used was a nvdia card I will have to look back and see what it was I have pictures of it stashed some where but it’s totally do able, it also requires you enable pci vga snoop in the bios!

    I just can't take all the moronic gestures & side gags in your vids dude, at first I subed to your channel, then quickly unsubed, when I saw the continuous stream of bullshit in your vids. I don't watch YT tech vids for bullshit.

    I n 1997 I was a teenager in an East European country, so I could only see those machines in magazines and dream about them. I was happy to have an Amiga 500 in those days.

    The motherboard and riser in this Compaq will probably conform to the NLX standard (PII/PIII era) the older Compaq's used the LPX standard.

    One of the very few black Compaqs of the time. I have a Compaq Presario 2200, which is also black, but in a desktop format instead of a tower. Definitely much more eye-catching than the typical beige boxes of the time.

      I 1000% percent agree! I have had my eye on a 2200 for the longest time! I need to pull the trigger when one comes on ebay clean but not asking some crazy amount (like $2000) I agree they are very different even designed different the even the beige compaq desktops then also, the 2200 was a true unicorn! Do you have the matching monitor? Do you use it for vintage games or anything?
