I visited Thursley National Nature Reserve on 3 occasions in the summer of 2024. Only on the last occasion did I begin to see the Dragonflies and Damselflies that this site is noted for. You can also usually see Hobbies swooping to catch these insects but this year has been the exception when I have visited. Summertime in the UK is often not the easiest time to photograph and video birds in the UK so I usually move onto butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. However after a wet autumn, winter, spring and early summer, the numbers of insects is well down on recent years. Having acquired a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 action camera I can now capture some 'B-Roll' footage to add a different element to the vid...

I'm back at my local nature reserve - Moor Green Lakes Area - in the summer of 2023. This time I've included a bit more of a review of my time with the Nikon P950. Although I go out bird watching primarily, I also video/photograph anything else I see. With good numbers of damselflies and dragonflies I often take these with the benefit that I can learn more about them when I get home and review ...

Bittern Dinton Pastures

With reports of up to 4 Bitterns being seen at Dinton Pastures Country Park and having not seen one before, I went over there on 24th Jan 2023 with a friend. We were very pleased to find that one of the Bitterns was in the same location and showing well. I don't know what causes the annoying shimmering effect when panning along the reeds. Feel free to give advice in the comments below.

are you into ASMR Peter?;😂
No - I'd heard of it but had to remind myself what it meant.
Hello Peter, really a nice movie of you and very pleasant to watch.A beautiful nature video ......Greetings Gijs 🤠🤠
Many thanks Gijs - your own videos seem close to perfection to me 😊
@@honky014 Hello Peter,i am trying to get the best out of it and that takes mostly a lot of time. When i see something interesting i spend hours to get closer, look for the right composition and light and background.I am very lucky with the 1300mm tele and macro on my lens.Thank you for your nice words!! 😊😊
Great video, so relaxing and love your commentary. I also have Pocket 3 and recently purchased P950. Can’t wait to use it. Thanks for sharing!
Many thanks - I'm sure you'll have fun using those cameras, I know I do 👍
Do you face any issues in Nikon p950 ???
The camera has always worked perfectly well. It will always have its limitations because of the small sensor size.
Is there any issue in camera you are facing right now???
The camera has always worked well but has its limitations. I'd like to be able to take detailed pictures of birds in flight and slow-motion video in 4k. However it suits me fine at the moment - I enjoy being out in nature and being able to capture some of what I see is a bonus.
Would a tripod be necessary for this camera when shooting at 500-1000mm? Or would handheld be ok?
For video at long focal lengths a tripod is very useful. Having said that I often get by all the way up to 2000mm if I have something to stabilise the camera such as the window of a bird hide or even a fence post.
@@honky014 thank you so much! God bless!
Would stills for long focal lengths be ok handheld?
This is probably the wrong camera for stills at long focal lengths handheld. To minimize action blur you need a fast shutter speed which in turn requires a high ISO. Pictures from this camera with a high ISO are extremely grainy - often good enough for an ID but not something you'd want to keep or to share.
Excellent video but the background music a bit overpowering
Thanks! A few people have mentioned that the background music is too loud. I keep working on it.🙄
The quality of the video suggests a tripod is used. Location, video, stills, commentary and music combine beautifully. Great production values above the ruck. Dragonflies are magic!
Many thanks - much appreciated 😊
I'm here after searching about P950. I really like this video and keep me watch it till the end.
Many thanks! 👍
Excellent video and informative. Not sure I know where Warren Heath is?
Thanks Peter. Warren Heath is part of Forestry Commission Land, NNE of a large village called Hartley Wintney in Hampshire.
Thank you for dropping the music volume down while narrating and for sharing your photographic journey with us. Well done on the video. It brought me to places that I may never venture to and has shown me beauty which I may not have been able to behold 🙂👍
Many thanks! Getting the audio settings right has proved a challenge. I'm hoping to copy the settings used in this video, going forwards. 😊
You’re really pushing the p950 to its limits! Your footage and commentary together with the music makes for a wonderfully relaxing vibe! Thanks for posting!
Thanks for commenting and glad you enjoyed it 😊. I may be hitting my limits with the P950 - still missing too many shots.
like your videos thanks for sharing greetings from a p950 birder germany
Thanks a lot! Glad you liked them 😊
Yet another great video Peter I loved the mixture of video and stills a perfect edit with superb narration well done ❤ regards Dave
That's real praise! Many thanks Dave 😊
Great birding! I'm curious what settings you used for the overcast day? Thanks!
Thanks Gail 👍. These days I'm almost always in aperture priority mode and then play with the exposure setting. When I remember, I make use of the histogram that pops up when adjusting the exposure - ensuring that it's fairly well centred.
Super relaxing, great video again Peter, thanks for sharing.
Cheers Richard - much appreciated 😊
I have p510 not quite as good Only $300 42x and great photos
Great photos at that price is something of a bargain. The 2000mm range of the P950 is not much use when there is a heat haze or in a strong breeze!
@@honky014 yes I have 42x lens rated 24-1,000 optical Think digital goes to 2,000 It’s grate for me Old dead sears film had 90mm and 2x glass With digital can check shots so doing good Your camera has better sensor so more low light As on budget this was great find Think optical zoom better than GoPro 1080p 30fps actually very good
Another great video, thanks for sharing Peter 👍
Many thanks Richard 😊
Brilliant Peter I really enjoyed that film you capture some great footage with that camera well done ❤ regards Dave
Cheers Dave - much appreciated 👍
Hello, a nice and interesting video of you.Sorry i am a Canon Man.....😊😊🤠🤠
Judging by your videos, you have a professional set-up and a very special nature reserve not too far away! 😃
Have coolpix p510 2012 version Good photos $300
The coolpix p510 is certainly capable of taking good photos at a very reasonable price. Personally I needed even more zoom capability for distant wildlife and video at 4k.
@@honky014 hear ya. Had early coolpix so knew this good. Early like 4x. 42x 24-1000 optical good enough for me
Have p510. Not as great but useable 42x 24-1000 optical
Amazing footage!!! A big LIKE from me. I'm a new friend here. A birder from Singapore. Have a nice day and stay connected.👍🔔
Many thanks - I've just been enjoying some of the more exotic wildlife in your channel! 👍

Wow that's an experience, sound all over the place, can't hear you speaking at all over that bloody horrible flute Try and balance the sound of your voice and zero music it's just distracting at best
i think if he turned down the music and put his voice on center (i hear his voice coming only from the left headphone) it would be better
Very nice!
Thanks! 😄
Good work. Were these captured in 1080P, or 4K?
Thanks. I always capture video in 4k except for the clips showing the camera settings.
I have been photographing dragon- and damsel-flies for a year or two, but on my more limited Lumix ZX100. With a bit of stalking I can nearly fill the frame, but I might well get a longer lens such as yours. I have seen videos on snapping dragonflies in flight, which is way beyond my skill, though I have got shots of dragonflies taking off by using a pre-burst function. Nice video, thanks.
Thanks John 😀. I didn't need the longer lens for the dragonflies at Thursley. As long as you keep fairly still they are willing to land close by. We'd both need very different cameras to photograph dragonflies in flight and even then you'd need a lot of skill and patience!
You never let me down Peter, another fabulous video of some glorious creatures and countryside, very well done.
Cheers Richard - your praise is much appreciated 😀
Such a lovely place and narrantion, and photos are also just great. Thank you for sharing this, hope the next videos won't keep us waiting!💕
Many thanks - much appreciated. Decent video and photos are proving a bit elusive at present - so the next video may be a while!
re: 1:30 - I suggest looking up 'diffraction', as that is what you are seeing. Each sensor size / resolution has a limit after which closing the aperture makes the image softer. With P950 and similar cameras, this limit is already close to, or even beyond, the wide open aperture.
Thanks for the information. I was under the misapprehension that I may have caused some blur in my narrower aperture tests by disturbing the camera when pressing the shutter, made worse by the slower shutter speed. It looks like I can go with the widest aperture allowable for most of my photography with the P950. 👍
very relaxing video, looking forward in buying this camera too, thank you Peter.
Thanks Sebastian. I've enjoyed taking this camera out on nature walks and seeing what I can capture. I do miss the chance to get good pictures of birds in flight or slow motion in 4k but at the moment I can live with this. 😀
Hello, a nice video of you and very well done!! Greetings Gijs
Thanks Gijs 😀
Hello, a nice video of you and like the way you are telling and explaining about nature.Nice music and editing!! Greetings from the Netherlands and subscribed to your channel.😊😊
Many thanks - much appreciated. I've just been enjoying your video of Yellowhammers (don't know what you call them). I've never seen so many at once! 😀
@@honky014 Hello, yes i was very lucky that 38 of them - in dutch ' Geelgors ' - landed in a field with seedbaring plants I only film in a nature reserve close to my hometown called the Maashorst nature reserve in the southeast of the Netherlands.I wish you a good weekend!!😊😊
That was an excellent video Peter loved the images brilliant narration as always a very enjoyable film❤ regards Dave
Thanks again Dave - much appreciated 😃
Hi Peter, your video, photos and narrative are brilliant. I’d enjoy it more if the music wasn’t so loud in places. The flute is clipping in the intervals. Other than that, thoroughly enjoyable 👏
Thanks for the feedback - getting the sound just right is proving a bit tricky. I keep experimenting to try to improve this.
@@honky014definitely not hard with the right software
Another good one, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Richard 👍
Another great film Peter love the content and how you edit and your narration well done looking forward to seeing what you create next ❤ regards Dave
Thanks Dave. I still have a bit of work to do on making the narration a bit clearer.
Thanks Peter 👌 another nice video of the local countryside. All.the best.
Cheers Jason. I've struggled to find birds/insects so far this summer. It's looking a bit more hopeful now 😀
Great footage
Many thanks!
Subscribe Done Dear. I hope you are very well. Your content ideas are excellent. But your videos do not have much engagement. and need a proper searchable video tag set up to reach the targeted area and audience. Your SEO score is much lower. Can I share with you some plans for increasing views and subscribers organically?
Nice, I want to get a video in low light condition birding with this camera or Nikon 1000, will be very thankful to you.
Cameras like this or the Nikon P1000 will really struggle in low light conditions. Ideally you would need something with a much larger sensor.
May i know how does the camera fare under light rain?
Personally I keep the camera in a bag which would cope with light rain, whenever I'm not using it. The bag has a rainproof cover for heavy rain. I don't usually attempt to use it outside when it is actually raining. As the camera is not weather sealed I wouldn't want to take the risk of using it even in light rain.
another great video very relaxing thanks and loved the technical bits
Many thanks 👍
That was brilliant Peter I really enjoyed it regards Dave👍
Thanks Dave - much appreciated 😀
Very enjoyable 😊
Thanks Jason 😀
Thank you Peter, I met you 2 years ago at the lakes. Me and a friend. I'm Jason. Well done on your video. I had the P1000 for a while. I couldn't get on with it. Many thanks.
I remember it well. The pic you captured would have been tricky if not impossible on the P1000 or P950.
@honky014 Thanks 😊 it was a long time ago and my memory is so short. Thanks for the video.
I love my 950 it’s a great all round camera for wildlife, not particularly good at everything but convenient.
Yes you need good light
What tripod would you recommend for this camera?
I currently use a Celestron Regal tripod with the head from a Neewer GM76 monopod. However this combination doesn't come with my recommendation. The legs on the Celestron always seem to be working loose and when I'm at full zoom and lock the head the camera always tilts up by a tiny fraction making the fine adjustment needed to frame the subject difficult to achieve. Thanks for the question though - you've just reminded me to check the legs before I go out tomorrow!
Love the hornets in the Tawny Owl cavity! great footage! I've newly subscribed to your channel and looking forward to catching up on your videos!
Thanks Gail - much appreciated 😀
Thank you for the great video. I love the Damselflies! I just got the 950P and I have a lot to learn, especially having a difficult time with the auto-focus. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, or do you have another video for the focus? Thank you!
Thanks! I often have trouble with the auto-focus preferring to focus on a blade of grass nearer the camera rather then the bird I'm looking at. Motion blur also often ruins a shot of a bird - the small sensor means that fast shutter speeds are not really on. Where insects are concerned I virtually always use manual focus - there is usually too much vegetation to confuse the auto-focus. I hope to learn more and share it in future videos.
