THIS MOVIE ROCKS! - EPISODE 1: YOJIMBO (1961)

In this new series, I take classic films and pick them apart for your viewing enjoyment. What makes it great? What makes it important? Why is it worth your precious time? All these questions will be answered in this video. Today, the film of choice is unsurprisingly, Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" (1961). I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it! Quick little video where I talk about the Criterions I bought in the latest sale. I bought 4 (1 watched/3 blind buys) and I am very happy with my purchase. Hope you all enjoy hearing my thoughts. Let me know if you want more! (I will be making more film videos regardless but I love getting comments!) SORRY FOR SAYING UM. I DIDN"T WANT TO DO JUMPCUTS FOR SUCH A RELAXED VIDEO AND EDIT FOR 10 YEAR...
There's nothing that says, "I appreciate art" more than ranking it. Also, we need to call more people/things "genius."
lighten up, buddy, or your life is going to feel pretty long pretty soon.
I loved Keaton's work. He did terrific in Beetlejuice, Spider-Man Homecoming and my personal favorite "The Founder". Excellent video, The Cinema Revivalist!
Coen brothers fans explaining why the dumbest comedy of all time has deep commentary about America
Joe Dante when poeple only know him for gremlins and not his other movies:
I love how a lot of this applies to most Nolan's movies also
This is the first Keaton film that I've watched. The only other time that I've seen him in a film was the bridge scene in Sunset Boulevard. Your analysis has helped me so much in understanding and appreciating this talented actor of yesteryear. Thank you.
I find your approach to film refreshing for youtube, most essayists praise the same movies over and over without real concern for cinema as art. Requiem for a dream and schindler's list are perfect examples of what I don't like about the popular "film cannon". The style and content of this video reminds me of the cinema cartography, but I think you explain things in a way that's more down to earth. I like it. Also, do you know the blog about film "Dennis Grunes"? Terrific film criticism.
@@EmanuelCastroChannel Thanks so much! Cinema Cartography has been a big inspiration for this channel, so that's a huge compliment 😁 I haven't heard of Dennis Grunes or his blog; do you have a link?
watching this only to find more movies
Tim Burton fans when they don't see Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter on casts list (Shocked Black Guy meme)
Movies trying not to make Mexico orange challenge:
Chaplan was an amazing man, very talented and hilarious. Keaton just makes him look like an amateur. He's so physical and visceral all the time, with even his simplistic gags and stunts. The fact he refused to reshoota scene if he could make it work was (and is) unheard of. Like taking a taking the ride off the road block into a moving car, or jumping (and missing) from one roof to another, it is really him doing extremely dangerous things and all for hopefully a few from his audience. His actions are unparalleled and he is absolutely the Master that even modern physical comedians like Carey are inspired and measured against. I love his work, and even his much more recent pictures are timeless and a sure fire way to get a hearty laugh.
Great comparison drawn to Haneke! He is truly Bressonian in many aspects, maybe best shown in Funny Games. Keep up the good work!
10/10 video. Cant believe I recognized 95% of the directors mentioned. I need to touch grass more 😂😂
C’est magnifique! Bravo !!!!! 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
really great essay! good stuff.
Great video!!
Still waiting for Keaton to make some babies
Hello strangers, Fist bump from across the void. I can't get any of my friends to watch these movies.
Neo realism is a bit to true
“Mike Leigh fans knowing he’ll never get funding.” I’m so glad this is wrong.
Ngl I thought I watched a lot of movies until I saw this. Didn't even know a handful.
@@kavin9115 lol, it’s a never ending rabbit hole my friend
I must ask, does this video spoil any of his films? I've only seen Mouchette (1967) so far
@@AbrasiousProductions a little bit, yes
@@thecinemarevivalist SHIT! I'll come back to this video after I've finished his entire filmography, thanks for letting me know👍
1:37 I busted out laughing here, Godard was such a pretentious, embittered loser who's about as artistically and creatively gifted as a wet sandwich, the more you learn about him, the more you see what a hideous person he was.
Ayeee mannn you have lotta knowledge buddy can ya give me your ig i could get pretty good recommendations
PTA slander actually upsets me
16 year old Hitchcock fan here
truely new outlook on film and stuff related to film
Terry Gilliam getting slapped back down by every studio for no good reason.
kassovitz appeared in amelie
As a wes anderson fan i can affirm that this is my reaction every time he announces a new film with one of the wilson brothers.
Oh my goodness, the Godard one is SO accurate! 😂
Didn’t know what the 2009 petition was, just looked it up. Im never watching anything ever again.
maybe you should've listened when we said Hollywood was full of pedophiles who drink baby blood, you can still watch those films but I hope you've learned to never look up to anybody but god himself.
What is it?
@@AmaruArriola in 2009 over 100 actors, directors and producers signed a petition to release Roman Polanski after he was arrested for the second time for sexually assaulting a 13 year old girl back in 1977. Some of the people that signed the petition were Wes Anderson Darren Aronofsky Monica Bellucci Tilda Swintion David Lynch Micheal Mann Martin Scorsese Woody Allen (the one I’m least surprised with that signed it) Roman Polanski was originally arrested back in 1977 for what he did and he did it at Jack Nicholson’s place. But Polanski only served 42 days in prison, as originally the judge was going to sentence Polanski to 50 years in prison, but the judge then changed his mind and only gave Polanski 90 days of psychiatric evaluation.
jeremy irons really method acted humbert humbert signing that
@@sophia_delrey Woody Allen was the least surprising one that signed it. But some of come out and regretted it since though.
Wow that 2009 petition is depressing Very good video though, very true
What was the 2009 petition anyway?
@@lisalisa-x9x a petition in favor of director roman polanski after he was convicted of a terrible crime, if you like movies and the people that make them there's a decent chance someone who's work you respect signed the petition It didn't really do anything so I just... try not to think about it
I'm not a cinephile, I just like movies, and I found this as a unique way to find movies I might not have heard about so cheers
@@YouCanCallMeReTro that’s awesome!

So you're saying these Edward Yang movies are good...?
@@Daniel-Rosa. Lifechanging
Taipei story and yi yi are a bit overrated/overhyped because of the excellent cinematography. Tho a brighter summer day , That one day at the beach and the Terrorizers are his best imo , basically relationship horror movies especially the latter. That day on the beach is underrated af. A brighter summer is perfect.
@@o.l4890 Bro is really calling an Edward Yang film "overhyped" 💀
Spot on for James Cameron
@lrrroftheplanetomicronpersei8 Obviously you’ve never seen Terminator, Aliens, T2, or Titanic
2:05 Michael Bay be like "hold my beer".
Bergman try not to make a black and white 90 minute slow burn about loneliness and a fear of death (IMPOSSIBLE)
But still that is great even when it is in all his films (almost)
First time hearing of Suzuki but always love seeing old school filmmakers.
