I'm interested in how Carson would have handled this. I'm sure Madonna would have been banned. I saw a clip where Dean Martin went nuts with censored F-Bombs, but since he was hilarious and won over the audience, Carson didn't seem to mind.

I hadn't seen any of this in years (only saw part back then, and not uncensored). The more I see old shows with Letterman lately, the impressed I am by how QUICK he is. I can't help but find myself rooting for him here. This was good (in a strange way) but not as much fun as the episode with Sandra Bernhard and Madonna from 1988, that one's great.
I liked her music but not her character with the attitude of a teenager in need of attention... Frankly, nothing impressive, a low level interview, even if Letterman demonstrates his usual class and professionalism.
The thing she was criticizing was that so called "class and professionalism" professionals nalism simply is not interesting 100 percent of the time

I gotta give Letterman credit, he did a masterful job responding on the fly to Madonna's unpredictability here.

She was vulgar, rude and sexist exposing herself just to take revenge of chauvinistic, misogynistic and abusive Dave Letterman and all the networks that has a double moral against women, specially with her. She all of sudden expressed no manners as some sort of nasty “white trash American woman meets Springs breaker on drugs” to sabotage the most famous Late night show man. For some moments she seemed stupid with her nervous laughing and him too. Well the price was too high and I’m not so sure… I don't know if that despicable man was worth it.

She was hard to shock because she would always shock you first. If you watch her other interviews, and I believe these were both on Dave, she taught us about spankings and Vicks Vaporub.

there were no issues or fines from the FCC - the david letterman show was not live ! the show was pre-recorded in front of a live studio audience in the afternoons (4:30 pm monday, tuesdays, & wednesdays, and at 3:30 pm & 6:00 pm on thursdays) then aired weeknights at 11:35 pm...all of madonna's expletives were removed prior to the broadcast...

I highly doubt that as it was the show’s producers idea, which was confirmed by Madonna’s publicist at the time. Liz Rosenberg finally admitted that it was all planned beforehand, but Madonna took the heat as usual.
No, it wasn’t planned that she would go as far as she did. I’m sure the producers encouraged her to be a bit edgy, but they didn’t bank on her being like this. Letterman’s frustration with her is clearly genuine. In any case Madonna has since admitted she was high, having smoked a joint before she went on.
