    Nice work. Are you primarily interested in jazz drumming? If so, what prompted you to use match grip? I played a lot of rock and enjoyed attempting prog rock and fusion so match just seemed logical. Also, I play open handed on a righty kit. Just wondered

    this twisted my mind lol it helped to think of the ride cymbal as straight time, no triplets. it seems that's how you are playing it? the parts that i cant fully grasp are the bars where there are triplets w/the kick/snare, while the ride is in straight time w/the dotted 16ths. are they happening same time, triplet and straight time? i slowed your stuff way way down and it seems you sometimes place the snare/kick triplet stuff on the same time as the ride (in effect expanding the triplet feel to the ride), BUT sometimes it appears you are doing a true triplet with the kick/snare while the ride stays with straight time. for me, to combine this feels super hard, but haven't quite practiced it. i could be wrong, just trying to make sense! any thoughts you have on this i'll take! If i am thinking about it wrong, or whatever. regardless what you are doing it all sounds and feels very good! Thank you!

    • @michaelnesi0827
      @michaelnesi0827 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching. This is super tricky because it has 1/16, 1/8, and 1/8 note triplets all in the solo. I reduced to it 50% and I am counting the triplets on the ride. When I encounter triplets in the solo they should align with the ride, 1/8, and 1/16 should not. No easy to do! I have a recording of Jim playing it with a bas layer, I will out a link in the details soon.

    • @mcstivi
      @mcstivi 2 месяца назад

      @@michaelnesi0827 got it, i think... so you ARE doing a triplet feel with the ride, AND you are layering that at certain bars with 1/8 or 1/16 notes w/various snare/BD patterns. in effect mixing triplet and straight time among different pieces of the kit am i understanding right? thank you for taking the time!

    Wow so clean! Great clip! 😃 I have a technical question if you don’t mind me asking. I tried going through this book many many years ago. But what always confused me was the implied / instructed swing interpretation of the 16th notes, but then having (I think?) straight 16th comping notes under the swinging ride cymbal. From your demonstration it looks/sounds like the comping limbs when notated as 16th notes are meant to be played like a 3 over 4 phrasing at times? (Apologies if this is a silly question, back in the day when i looked at these exercises RUclips didn’t exist 😅)

    • @michaelnesi0827
      @michaelnesi0827 2 месяца назад

      Thank you for the kind words. I was lucky to have studied with Jim when I was young. Many of the exercises are based on songs. I have other Jim Chapin based videos where you can download a list of them. Jim always sung when he played. There were audio recordings of Jim playing the exercises but were not included it was written in 1948. I believe he recorded them in the 60’s. I have some older LPs that are considered bootleg, they came with a version of the book as well, then they added them to the book purchase in recent years. Many of the early jazz books were written in 1/16 notes, Dom Famularo told me why specific to Jim’s, but I don’t recall. I may have an audio recording of his explanation. Anyway, the final exercise has 1/8, 1/8 note triplets, and 1/16 note notation. I try and keep the ride on 1/8 note triplets and play the 1/16 and 1/8 notes straight since triplets are also present. You could potentially swing everything at a slower tempo. The accents are another challenge. I practiced the book many ways, as written, and swung in certain examples. You can also play the 16ths as an up-tempo version converting them to 1/8 notes. The funk solo I did is essentially that. Hope this helps it is a complicated topic.
