Follow me on my paleontology adventures while I go fossil hunting, then watch how I prep and repair them for display.
I have been fascinated by dinosaurs and fossils as far back I can remember. I read every library book I could find, visited every rock shop I passed (if I could convince my parents to stop) and dragged home every rock if I thought it might have a fossil. That passion never left, but now I can actually pursue that dream a little. Along with paleontology, I love everything outdoors... hiking, camping, exploring, Jeeping, gold mining, bottle digging, metal detecting, and more.
If you like what you see, please like the videos and subscribe to my channel. I love answering questions, and try to respond to all. If you have a question about any place I visit, types of fossil I collect, or tools and techniques for prepping, please be sure to comment.

See the previous video: ruclips.net/video/burkbV4QbJA/видео.html The point of a fossil jacket is to protect a specimen in its journey from where it was found in the field, to the lab. Hunting Dinosaur Fossils in South Dakota Hell Creek Formation
I just built a similar system. I used two stages of desiccants. The first stage has a 10” filter housing with silica gel and the second stage has molecular sieve A4 then I have a small chamber with a Bluetooth humidity sensor to make sure that I’m getting dry air.
Do you have any tips on how to find fossils in shale? Theirs a lot in my area but I don’t know how to properly find some.
there is no secret, you just have to look. The sad reality is that most rock exposure hold no fossils, so be sure to check any outcrops possible. It will also help to research any fossils found for that formation so you have an idea of what you should be looking for.
Seems like it would be better to put that big filter on the regulated side. A little less pressure to worry about.
Thanks for the nice video. Very useful. Instead of silica gel you could use calcium chloride. Could it be better?
Why not cool the air so the water vapor turns to a liquid so it can be drained off. That way your old system would last for weeks at a time. What you did is not a cheap way of doing it IMO.
youre talking about a refrigeration drier system. You think thats cheaper and easier than silica gel?
@@TheFossilFiend Plus you can microwave it and reuse. I run twin tanks, wet / dry tank. Coming out of the compressor head it goes through a transmission cooler/fan, then a large harbor freight " industrial " filter, desiccant, then another filter to catch any desiccant dust. A refrigeration drier system may have to be added as soon as summer hits here on the gulf coast.
What is the advantage of putting desiccant filter on the high pressure side of the regulator?
What’s the name of the boat ramp? I only could find private ones
Can anyone explain why is the desiccant dryer placed before not after the regulator? I would have thought slower moving air through the desiccant would increase its drying capability???
How long start to finish in real time?
When I was a little kid in the early 1960s I had a friend who's family had a big ammonite, about the size of a soccer ball and was in absolutely perfect condition. I remember it as being like an antique bronze color, but it was a long time ago. His dad plowed it up on their farm in eastern Montana. I was always fascinated by it. I wish I had one just like it!
Wow !!! What an Incredible and amazing fossil find!! 🦑 🐙!!!! Thank You!! 👍🦖🦕😊
If you epoxy the brass fitting to the filter's plastic threading you may get a better seal.
thats a good idea, since there isnt a need to remove the fitting. I did end up disassembling and rebuilding the system in a renovation of the shop and I was able to stop the leak. I'll keep the epoxy idea for future uses though!
Best video hands down... all steps shown and links to materials use. Not a useless look at mine video.
I found something similar to these fossils Up State New York along with some ancient sea shells and a few Trilobites plus a few partial fragments of sea Scorpions ❤😎👍
This brings back memories. I did a fossil dig in N. Dakota just outside Marmarth. Fossils went to the PTRM.
Great channel. Thanks for sharing ❤
Love it! I think , I found a bone bed in Michigan, by the saint joseph river, by the state line, by Notre dame,.... These things. are incredible. I'm unsure what to do. That's how I found your video.
I agree they could be toothmarks. I have discovered many pliosaur and plesiosaur bones with bite marks and they look very similar.
If you said it in the video and i missed it, i apologize. How much dessicant do you put in the dryer? 1/2 full? 3/4 full?
probably 95% full. look at the video thumbnail and you can see how full I have it.
He mentioned 4 pounds fills it.
I've been running the same thing for 3 years now for my bead blasting! No problem at all and dry air which is essential! There was a video on this build posted 5 or 6 years ago that I followed. I am actually baking the beads in the oven today as they have turned orange and need to remove the moisture content and return them to the purple colour!
Clever use of a water filter. I may try that!
So how do you change the Celica beads because when you pull that canister off and refill it you go to put it back on the bees are going to go right up that tube
The tube is attached to the bottom of the bowl before the beads are pored in after which the top of the tube is aligned so it fits the upper connection and screwed on.
I really enjoyed your video. The 3/8" double male you mentioned is properly known as a pipe coupler.
A double male would actually be a nipple or if it's over ( I think it's 12 in but it might be 10) 12 in is just called pipe
A female on both ends would be a coupler
@@bretk7916 Thank you for correcting me.
What state did you guys find these in??
Why so many in S. Dakota?
Who's that tom hanks with his son?
Holy cow great video! 3 minutes in googling fossil sites wondering how many miles I need to drive. Turns out I'm living in one. Thanks man!
I hope someday you find a skeleton ❤
Geo physics technology benefitted fossil hunting in any way?
Loved your video and great music too❤🎉
I was there today. Split a hand size rock. Found a beautiful ammonite with some residual in the shell where i broke the stone open. 3 pieces, but super glue on and you have a nice display of both halves.
Do you use a Ginger Counter?
Great video, great idea's and good music!🤘
I know this is an old video but am curious about the identity of the black rock around your fossil finds b
I recently found ammonites and fossilized bones, but II dont know their origin.
@saidifj4443 the first step is to research the rock formation for the area you found your fossils. That should give you quite a bit of information on their origins.
@@TheFossilFiend It's limestone rock and the bones appear to be part of an animal's ribs.
Can you tell me if this is a dinosaur or prehistoric footprint on this rock I found please
Why not to reverse the flow and no need for the Brillo !???
then you would be pushing air top to bottom. moisture settles, so its better to have it enter low and work its way up through the desiccant. gives you a more defined line of remaining dry desiccant.
Hey, I’m going up to Seymour for some fossil hunting real soon, are the Cradock Bone Beds open to the public? Asking because I would love to go hunting there.
sorry, no. That is a private ranch and only the museum has access. Everything around there is private land, so I dont think you'll find any place you can hunt on. You could contact the museum about becoming a volunteer field worker. Dont know if that could work for you or not.
@@TheFossilFiend I found a creek called Brushy Creek in Seymour, I don’t know how to tell if it’s private property or not.
I’ve found a few sites of my own. Wotton-Under-Edge has a quarry dump which is great for echinoids, and keynsham has the best ammonites I’ve yet come across.
That’s a great idea; very resourceful and inventive. I wondered why you didn’t just use a cylinder of aluminium mesh at the bottom? Because of turbulence I suspect your small holes may well create a restriction, even if their combined area is greater than 3/8”. Also, at the top, it looked as though the 3/4” pipe might well fit over the lid duct without a fitting. Either that or perhaps the fitting could do with bushing. Finally, I found myself unable to spend 22 minutes watching this without skipping forward. I found the pace to be too slow for me, excruciatingly so at times. As an exercise, why not try editing that down to a six minute video and see what you end up with? Assembly sections after explaining, if included, are often better played at a faster speed. Feedback is well intentioned. Nice job. 👍
I've been finding a ton of baculites by accident recently. Don't know why mine don't seem to have pronounced sutures like most I see?
Its either the deposition environment that didnt allow the sutures to fossilize well, or you may be seeing mostly living chambers, which dont have any sutures.
I’ve made one of these out of A execlon 4000 clear PVC and 3” diameter PVC. But I like the idea of using an off the shelf products. So I’m making one for my airbrush booth. My only concern is getting the length of the PVC exact. There’s an O ring inside the screw on top. So both gasket and o ring must be compressed. The desiccant should be first, followed by a particulate filter and coalescing filter. You can put your pressure regulator at the end or before. But some of these filters require a minimum psi to work so I put the regulator after everything.
Putting the regulator last also prevents any output pressure variations due to restriction and flow rate changes.

Hey i have a question that is not very common… can you make a video where i can find fossils in a small european contry of Serbia ?
*Let the Sunshine in...*
That's an easy to make interesting design, I,ll have to add one of those in. Id use a collesiong filter from tip tools before the dryer to save on the beads. Their metal water trap pipe setup is easy to make and works very well, i never even get moisture in the initial water trap.
We used to find these as kids on the red river about 30 miles up from where the lake is
Did you have a link for you manifold block, I didn't see that? Thx!
thank you catching that! I just added it to the description. Its not a amazon item, but I threw away several of those and bought this one. I've been very happy with it. No issues with leaking, out-of-spec port threads here.
Amazing diversity! I’ve been wondering? Are the suture patterns original for the animals or a result of permineralisation?
