at the 4:10 mark, you can see a washout where a concrete wall is. The drone doesn't see it, but near the conccrete wall is a set of original western north carolina railroad stone stays that had been buried under the row a long time ago. they came from a quarry that was close to the loops.
This probably also ripped out the plumbing for Andrew’s Geyser.
As the son of a Southern railway Daddy (rip C.R.Grooms) my eyes can't believe the destruction to the place my Dad and myself grew up. There on old hwy. 70 just between town and the geyser area,me and my cousins played on the banks of Mill Creek. And the last house on the right headed up the loops by that tressle,my Papaw built that house back in 1922 so I'm highly disturbed to see the places so close to my heart........destroyed. My uncle still lives on my Nana's place and I haven't seen him in years but glad to see my grandmother's place is still there. But the loops we were so proud of are now a memory.
All those near barren trees remind me too much of WV.
The government is making NS repair the Old Fort's line when NS was losing money on the line.
Are you sure about that? As a shareholder, I have not seen any such, and as such, I am opposed to rebuilding it, but as a lifelong railfan -- GO FOR IT.
@railroadman32257 I can't think of the guy's name but he said that the government is making them do it because the line is between two states.
@@ericposey1986 But Eric, that would be the line west of Asheville which they are rebuilding. This line runs originally from Salisbury to Asheville, while the line on into Tennessee came later. As I said elsewhere though, this was my favorite ride, although I was pretty busy manning the recorders, when we tested the rocking of coal cars monthly over this line, & track gauge & such at the same time. In those busy times, there were coal trains, merchandise, locals, and a passenger train, now it is (or was) a local train as needed. This line does not cross state lines.
Great vid , audio complete shite , . Are you on crack ? What a waste of time this ....
Great video footage...bad music, had to put it n mute
As if we care what you think about the music psychopath.
I don’t think NS is going to bother to fix this. My guess is they will donate the land to the State of NC and they can pay for repairs if they want to extend the commuter line.
Nice work flying that drone. I appreciate you doing this.
Down in Fletcher the tracks washed out around Cane Creek near where the Cranston Plant was. I live in Hendersonville and we have lots of “decommissioned” railroad cars being stored on the unused tracks down here. I’m guessing that they will be there for a very long time with all of the railroad track damage from Helene in WNC.
thanks will cost lost of $$$$$$ to rebuild and the music is awesome
Final analysis from the video: Lots of holes in the roadbeds, some washouts, especially right outside of Old Fort and 1 near Ridgecrest, a good amount of downed trees, even some damaged bridges. The line looks repairable, but with the decrease in traffic, I think NS might abandon it. It would be nice to see the line get restored.
I take it, NS doesn’t have the financial reserves and/or connections with the federal government to make the same kind of progress here, that CSX is reporting on their stretch of road in this area. Beautiful video, and hauntingly pleasing soundtrack.
Not yet, anyway. Hopefully that will all change after next month.
I doubt we will hear anything of what will become of the loops till they finish working on the line west of ashville
I was expecting worse. Glad to see so much intact railbed and track that is accessible.
Excellent, as we’ve come to expect from you! The “road” (I use the term loosely!) that appears to somewhat follow the line, is that old Hwy 70? And if so, is it passable?
The section of Old 70 seen here has been closed for many years and is primarily used by cyclists and walkers. Mill Creek road is repaired now and passable between Ridgecrest and Old Fort.
@ The loops would make a great rail trail! I don’t see it coming back as a rail line though.
Take that drone and go check out the Clinchfield loops next. Supposed to be a big washout just south of Rocky siding.
The damage did not look that severe once away from the geyser area but I have serious doubts this line will be rebuilt unless the state kicks in some $$ because they want commuter type service to Asheville. Hurts to see all that damage. This was my favorite part of the SR during my 13 year tenure there.
I agree. I don't see Norfolk Southern spending the amount of money it will take to rebuild the line between Asheville & Old Fort.
Yeah i suspect the line will lie dormant/abandoned unless the NCDOT or NC railroad company provides funding or buy the line I hope this happens since lately the have been getting serious about passenger rail and have paid to upgrade other NS lines such as double tracking the danville and charlotte districts between Greensboro and Charlotte. And the also provided funding for short lines and business in western NC to repair their rail connections

I don't believe Norfolk Southern will repair the track between Asheville and Old Fort.
Where is this? USA?Canada?
Outside of Asheville, NC.
@@johnhenryNC Okay, thanks, Greetings from Budapest, Hungary.
@@RR98guy Greetings from the foothills of North Carolina. 👋
@@RR98guy Greetings from Florida. Seach for Asheville, NC on Google Earth. Mark the spot and then search for Old Fort, NC and mark that spot. The railroad goes through the middle of Old Fort exiting slightly to the northwest. Trace it, and first you come to Point Tunnel, then the Andrews Geyser (actually a fountain monument to the builders of the railroad). Around there, you will see the BIG "S" curve that comprises the loops. Then continue and the railroad bears up into and out of a valley. This is approximately Coleman. Then there are several tunnels, LickLog, Jarretts, etc. and finally Bergen. Then a long stretch along the side of the ridge and finally Swannanoa Tunnel which passes under the edge of an assembly ground, Actually Ridgecrest, A Baptist retreat area. Then on to Asheville. The issue is there is little or no industry between Marion, NC, a few miles east of Old Fort, and Asheville.
Between Ridgecrest and Old Fort North Carolina
thanks very impressive with the msic mke more dramatic, hope it will be repaird
GREAT FOOTAGE ! Love the coverage here. IF these tracks are repaired that really cinches my general theory There is NO useless trackage routes left. All remaining routes have some sort of plan, future traffic, bolstering present traffic, storage, future passenger train state funding, who knows?
Very cool
Once again great footage 👍
I'm guessing they're not even going to bother rebuilding this? Doesn't look like they've even begun to yet. First Saluda grade, and now the Loops. Sad.
From what I have seen, the Old Fort to Coleman section is in way better shape then Asheville to Marshall.
Would make a nice rails to trail greenway.
We can’t allow that!
Get out of here with that stupid shit. That will never happen.
@@bryanmarshall8124 Good job! The trail will 100% not work! The cost $$$ to build a trail on that route will be equivalent to ACTUALLY REBUILDING that route.
glad u shared this, you did alot of work & time to do so
Yep, looks like we’ll be waiting for that Asheville-Salisbury Amtrak connection a lot longer now. Very good footage, hope everyone involved is okay.
Good capture and editing for a near seamless product. Could consider increasing the content value with highly selective text of narration as explanation/context.
Good flying through the tunnels and trees. At least the higher you go it’s getting a little better but after Ridgecrest it is going to get bad again. I don’t see how the little bit of traffic left in this line is worth rebuilding it without coal traffic. I know it’s a long way up to Roanoke and back around to North Carolina but that’s a lot of time and money to fix this.
Thank you for your effort. Substantial amount of erosion damage to repair and stabilize. Wonder if NS will do that work given a low usage line?!! Humbling to see the magnitude of the damage!!
love that Southern lash up! awesome trains all around :)

@@bryanmarshall8124 thank you
Very nice drone work. I was expecting the damage to be much worse.
Very challenging. Lots of trees, high wind, and weak signals.
@@bryanmarshall8124 I mean to say, it's not completely ruined like the river-lever routs line were.
I agree! I was imagining the track from above Andrews Geyser to be IN the geyser! Still doubt they’ll fix it. It’s reason for being has disappeared.
@tomt9543 NS has no choice but to fix it. They are required by contract to keep the route viable. It's an agreement between them and the DOD. Been that way for years.
@ That didn’t help Saluda! It’s been sitting unmaintained for decades with track hanging 100’ in the air at places! That’s were the creative “Railbank” term comes in! Not abandoned, but not used or maintained. Same deal on the Greensboro/Winston-Salem/Charlotte line. Unused and unmaintained for decades from W-S towards Clemmons, but not abandoned! Abandonment and not repairing it are two totally different scenarios! NS would tell the feds they could move military equipment faster via the routes they’ve been using since 2020 when they stopped running trains between Linwood & Asheville and sent everything through Roanoke and Bristol.
Unbelievable amount of damage on the Loops. Thanks for sharing.
As comical as a Climax pulling an autorack looks, the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum made an even silly-er-looking move in 1:1 scale earlier this year: ruclips.net/video/8f_aT920IPw/видео.html
Lol Thanks for sharing!
😔😔 hope they’ll be able to fix it. I think they said it be a 3 month rebuild but will see.
The peak water at the six minute mark must’ve been horrifying
A heartbreaking and memorable video of an area I know so well. We were trapped at a Bed & Breakfast between Old Fort and Ridgecrest due to road washouts and landslides. Five days after Helene hit we hiked out toward Ridgecrest leaving our cars behind. A month later we returned to retrieve our car after the road to Old Fort was repaired. We’ve hiked beside these rails for years and love the area. Thanks for shooting this unique look at this region. It will be sad if the rails are not repaired, but from a cost benefit analysis, they might just abandon it.
It is a heard breaking situation. However if I am not mistaken, there is a military contract with the railroad to keep the line open.
Good job on the drone footage. Interestingly, repair work hasn’t started yet. Might be because the road is closed near Ridgecrest because of a washout. I don’t know what happened to the gravel road. If there is no repairs for a bit, then we can call the loops abandoned
Soundtrack was Excellent. Most fitting. TY. I was really effected by the whole presentation!!
Great video!
I worked for Southern, 6/65-8/78 and monthly I measured R&R on the unit trains. I've been over this line (and Saluda) at least 90 times and it hurts to see some of the best 19th century engineering laid to waste. I got to wonder if it is worthwhile for NS to rebuild this mess. There is no business between RidgeCrest and Old Fort. As a shareholder I hope they don't, seems like a waste of money, but as a railfan since the age of 2, I hope it is rebuilt, better than ever. Now 85, I'm retired 23 years from CSX.
That's sad to see.
@@railroadman32257 my hope is that the state or NC railroad company provides funding since people have been wanting Amtrak service to ashville and latly NC has been getting pretty serious with passenger rail projects
I measured R & R on the unit trains ?????
@@mshum538 The as-delivered SilverSides gondolas were famous (or infamous) for their rocking back and forth tendency and starting around 1965 there were derailments of trains that had them. I hired on at the Test Department and after it was determined that a derailment of the YellowLead unit train was not caused by bridge deflection, i.e. sagging, and my boss had observed wheels lifting off the rails as a train passed, we knew something had to be done. So my assignment was to determine the cause and then our mechanical folks had to find a solution. The cause was the roughly 39 ft. spacing between the truck centers of the car, and the 39 ft. length of jointed rail. Around 15mph, this caused a resonance affect in which the car rocked further and further until sometimes it just tipped over taking more with it. The solution in the short run was snubbers (big shock absorbers, same function as those on your car) and center plate extension pads at a cost of about $1500 a car in 1965 dollars. But until welded rail was installed, we tested the coal trains on critical routes every 30 days by putting a gov't surplus gyroscope on the end of a car and with that measuring the rocking angle. Anything greater than 4 degrees off vertical was bad. So for some time, we tested the Belmont Train, Andover, VA to near Charlotte, NC by way of Ashevile & Saluda, and the Catawba train, Andover to near Statesville by way of Asheville & the Loops.
@@railroadman32257 Having 40 years in the industry I remember having the same “ harmonic rocking “ with the 100 ton high cube covered hoppers on jointed rail on certain curvatures, which they were granted the name “ swinging sways “ …
I don’t think this will be restored to rail service
I didn't see any work at all going on on the railroad. Is the plan to abandon the railroad from Old Fort to Asheville?
Would be good to know where this is, for those of us who are unfamiliar with the area.
Ok I will add that in the description.
@@bryanmarshall8124 And great video.
You can find it easily on Google Earth. Just search for Old Fort, NC and it will zoom in on the community. The railroad comes in from the east and exits toward the northwest. You can easily follow it all the way to Asheville. On the thought that it might not be rebuilt, I digitized the route off G.E. yesterday and plan to add it to my revised Clinchfield route in ORTS, i.e. from just east of ClinchCross to Asheville. It will surprise me if it is rebuilt, but if NC is serious about adding a state train to Asheville, then maybe the state will assist in some way. They did this when some revisions were made where the CSX "A" line crosses the old SAL line to the coast because they plan to add a passenger train from the coast to at least Selma & Raleigh. I worked on the signals for that route when I was employed by a signal contractor, before I retired the 2nd time.
Old Fort NC on Interstate 40 due east of Asheville.
