Jerry Fickes Memorial Social Event
In honor of Jerry Fickes, Capitol Fire Training in coordination with Barnaby's of West Chester held a social event to honor the fallen firefighters from Wilmington Fire Department (Jerry Fickes, Christopher Leach, and Ardythe Hope). During this event, we were honored to have guest speaker Ret. Wilmington Firefighter Terrance Tate. FF. Tate opened up about his role and efforts amongst many the night of the Lakeview Road fire, which claimed the lives of those three.
In this discussion he also talks about his mental state not only before, but after the tragedy. This event was the fire time Tate has publicly spoken about the tragedy since the day of giving his statement.

Capitol Quick Tip Harness Maintenance : If you wear a class two harness on your structural firefighting PPE (especially harnesses with buttons & snaps), the most challenging thing is trying to get the buttons undone when you need a part of the harness (ie: ladder hook or sliding D-Ring to PSS). : One way to overcome this buttons being hard to undo is to use an easy non greasy/non messy lubrican...

Capitol Quick Tip Max RPMs & Blades : Anytime we are putting saw blades on our rotary saws, we need to ensure that the blade can handle the saw. : Many times people don’t realize that the blade has a rating, just as much as the saw itself is rated. With that said…we need to make sure that we are aware of what our saw’s max rpm’s are, followed by making sure we know what the blades max rpm’s are...

Capitol Quick Tip Rope Repacking : A simple, yet fast way to repack rope is to add a carabiner to either your harness, turnout pants, or even a standard belt or belt loop. : By running the rope through the carabiner, as you pull the rope, it self corrects on its way through, and flows smoothly right into the rope bag. It’s important that with rope, we remember not to layer/ stack it, and to jus...

Capitol Quick Tip The Bailout Kit : Firefighters will purchase or be issued personal escape systems, but with lack of education they won’t necessarily have all the right components in the right places, will be improperly trained, and training in a manner that isn’t the safest. It’s important that we have the proper components of the bailout kit in place for a safe deployment in the event we nee...

Capitol Quick Tip “Sounding the Halligan” : When we are forcing entry in zero visibility, we want to be 100% sure that we know where the bar-man has the halligan. : One thing we can do is to sound the Halligan. Sounding the Halliganbis just a simple tap with the axe, just to ensure that we know where the adz is before we deliver a solid blow to the bar. In simple terms it’s just a “assurance” t...
Capitol Quick Tip “Wrapping Halligans)

Capitol Quick Tip Halligan Wraps : One of the aged old questions and often points of contention…Do you wrap the Halligan or not? : If the shoulders on your halligan have been modified so that the members can use them in tight spaces, it’s pointless to wrap the halligan. The wrapping makes it hard to drive your striking tool down the shaft of the halligan to the shoulders. When this tactic is be...
Capitol Quick Tip “The nozzle & back up firefighter”

Capitol Quick Tip Nozzle & Backup Firefighters : The nozzleman is only as good as the backup firefighter helping. In light staffing departments/organizations this back firefighter is the officer. Regardless of the title, that back up position is responsible for helping the hose around turns, up or down stairs and free of getting caught on obstructions. : Sometimes the question arises about tool...
Capitol Quick Tip- Attaching Dead Weight To You

Capitol Quick-Tip Attaching Dead Weight to You : We need to be mindful when we attach dead weight of downed firefighters to ourselves as the rescuers in firefighter removal situations. : Many times we don’t account for the navigation of turns in residential dwellings, or even account for regular household obstacles that are present or even behind us as we’re moving. It’s very simple to loose yo...

Capitol Quick-Tip Roof Saws : Knowing what a commercial roof’s make-up and materials can sometimes be tricky without physically putting eyes on it. : If we have the means, we want to bring many options for saws and hand tools with us to the roof. This allows us to have options, and eliminate the need for members to have to go down and back up the aerial multiple times. If we have a saw kit, bri...
