    I think you were sitting one row behind where I sat (at a difference performance). Like you, it was my first visit to this theatre. I loved the music! Did you have a warmup jazz band outside the theater before the performance? This reminded of Great Gatsby in many ways. Extensive sets, traditional choreography, a typical musical, but nothing special. I was glad to see James Monroe Iglehart, but this show while good, didn’t wow me.

    I'm happy you enjoyed the show. While many ALW fans like SUNSET, many have found it to be awful. I think Sunset Boulevard was the last ALW mega musical from it's period, which is also my childhood (adolescence). After Sunset, the 1980s European producers were losing steam on Broadway. Many musicals of the 2000s from ALW in the 2000s got panned from American audiences but did OK on Londons West End. The Woman in White never made it to Broadway due to the American actress casted who critics claimed screamed through the songs. Whistle Down The Wind had a pre-tryout in some city but no one liked it. Luckily, I saw it in London, England when was 18. The Beautiful Game was never attempted in a tour, but hace played cities in Canada with a new name -- The Boys in The Photograph. Stephen Ward was never attempted. I consider myself LUCKILY to have witnessed Love Never Dies in the 2018 US Tour which was ALW testing the waters. It recieved mix reviews and during the performance I saw, people left in the middle of the show. I was nit happy with that, so I even tweeted a PM to the theatre about how disrespectful this was. Emergencies happen. So that's fine. 1 person getting up every 5 minutes is just too distracting. Unfortunately, the theater cannot hold people in. They can only hold people from coming in. 2014 ALW saw some success with The School of Rock. It was a crowd pleaser abd many people enjoyed it. It got good reviews. Now going to the other arteurs of the 1980s -- Claude Michelle Schoonberg and Alain Boublil. While Les Miserables has found worldwide success as well as Miss Saigon doing pretty well as the megamusicals they are, Martin Guerre never made it to Broadway despite it having the most beautiful music. Maybe it was a book problem? Anyhow, there was a tiny tour and 2 cast recordings (original lindon cast and the 1999 U.K Tour) but it was no Miss Saigon. Decades later they premiered The Pirate Queen. While an actress was pointed for a good portrayal of queen Elizabeth, critics claimed music was repetitive and it failed miserably on Broadway. Amazingly, there is a an original Broadway cast recording. Unfortunately, the French duo brought us Les Miserables were like one hit wonders. They haven't had a hit on Broadway since Les Miz. And now ALW has lost his footing as PHANTOM and CATS are gone. Bad Cinderella became nothing more than a meme. Bad Cinderella did well for it's short run in London but Londons run was much longer than Broadway's 3 months. Although I've never seen Sunsert Boulevard but have The original lindin cast and the Los Angeles (American Premiere Recording), maybe ALW axtually needed a fresh take on one of his older works. Even if Sunset runs for only a year; we can claim that ALW has found some success. There are so many other great ALW shows that need revivals of okder shows unbeknownst to us Americans. However, in order for them to even have a chance, they need a new direction. I think Whistle Down The Wind could use a bit of Jaime Lloyd direction. However, it probably cannot be done minimalistically like the new production of Sunset. Unfortunately, Americans may not get a chance to see this show. I think Beautiful Game could be done well some screens since they need a crowd of people playing soccer such as in The Final. P.S if you listen to "If This Is What We're Fighting For" from The Beautiful Game by ALW and Ben Elton, you might notice some recognizable notes. It's also a very powerful song. Unfortunately, without context, no one may know what it's referring to. All I know is is that it has a sad ending.

  • @FidesAla
    @FidesAla 20 дней назад

    Sounds interesting. Does it talk about the content of Miss Saigon, or just the casting? I personally have a lot of issues with the content, in terms of racism, but then again, it's popular here in Japan. I wish Broadway would give more of a chance to Asian shows that aren't just about racial issues. But then again, London had a Japanese show that takes place in modern Japan and doesn't involve any white people or discussions of race, and it flopped because it was too foreign for anyone other than anime fans. A Korean show is opening on Broadway next year, but I wonder why they chose something so saccharine when Broadway prefers darker stories, and most Korean musicals are pretty dark. They should put Fan Letter on Broadway. It's about Korean writers in the 1930's when Korea was occupied by Japan. And of course, Frankenstein, or any of the dozens of Korean musicals based on European literature and historical figures. They had Marie Curie in London, too. I don't know how well that went, but I think it was from the same people who finally did Rebecca in English.

    • @BeforeItCloses
      @BeforeItCloses 19 дней назад

      Yes! The content of Miss Saigon is discussed in the earlier part of the play. My second favorite scene includes a discussion between two characters whose opinions of Miss Saigon differ. Thank you for making me aware of Fan Letter! What was the show you mentioned had flopped in London?

      @@BeforeItClosesIt’s called Your Lie in April. It’s like The Fault in our Stars but with teens who play classical music. Too sentimental for me, but the source material is popular. It’s originally from Japan but it premiered in Korea and the UK at around the same time.

    Hello! Just found your channel. Have you seen any Asian musicals? A lot of them have orchestration like this, the kind Western musicals don't really do anymore. You should look up Brandon Lee's Frankenstein. It's really good. There's an album from 2018, and two proshots from Japan. The original Korean production apparently had a proshot recorded this year, but a release hasn't been announced yet. It might be in movie theaters worldwide with subtitles, though, so look out for it!

    The beginning of this review totally missed the boat and it’s too bad. For anyone who watched this all the way through. this tepid, uninspired and rather bi-polar critique of the show was underwhelming at times and merely one person’s opinion. At least I am happy that I didn’t watch this BEFORE I went to see this production. This “critic” definitely isn’t someone that I would have benefited from listening to. First of all, the only similarity between Gypsy and The Hills of California is that they both have characters that are also sisters with an ambitious stage mother. However, the reasons behind the mothers’ respective desires to make their children stars spring from very different places. Mama Rose wants fame for herself and that’s why she pushes her children into the limelight. Veronica in The Hills of California mostly wants her children to have better lives than they can possibly have otherwise. Fame is their ticket out of Blackpool. After all, the girls are growing up during the 1950s, and there weren’t as many options for women then. Veronica’s motivating forces are not the same as Rose’s, and this IS NOT a facsimile of Gypsy. It’s unfortunate that this was how this got interpreted it, because it’s a very one dimensional take on a far more complex issue. As for the length of the play, it didn’t seem overly long to me. If 2.5 hours of live theater seems tedious in this day and age, then I assume that this “critic” isn’t a big fan of O’Neill, Lillian Hellman, Shakespeare etc. Jez Butterworth is known for his brilliant work, yet his plays are usually longer than many other contemporary pieces and this shouldn’t be a problem if people favor the quality of the content over brevity. The Hills makes the one act production of “Job” currently at the Helen Hayes theater playing right now, seem like a quick little snack! On the contrary, The Hills never seemed like it dragged on at all. When a show is this good, it is a treat. To say that it should be shortened would be kind of like complaining that your filet mignon was too big and too meaty to consume! Everyone is fabulous. The acting is superb. Laura Donnelly is definitely going to be nominated for a Tony and she very well might win it. However, all of the actors deserve to be commended for their brilliant performances. The show is worth seeing based on the merit of the ensemble’s performances alone. In fact, The Hills of California was so amazing that I never wanted it to end. It’s a beautiful tour de force and you DEFINITELY should see it.

    Oh, it's REALLY easy to ruin Gypsy. Wolfe is a great director and I'm glad he won't have Laurents glaring over his shoulder.

    Just got back from this play and I can tell you, you've never seen anything like it. The acting is riveting, even as the payoff is stomach-churning. Oy vey, what a ride. I came to this play as a huge Succession fan. Peter Friedman (Succession's "Frank") is one of the finest actors around. It was a privilege to watch him work. As for Jane, I related to Sidney Lemmon's character a little too much. Her character was extremely well-written and well fleshed-out. She embodies the dread we feel when we have seen, through the internet, behind the curtain and learn too much about the darker, freakier aspects of not just the internet but the evil humans and darkest corners of the world that the internet enables us to connect us to. (Imagine witnessing a rape/murder and then trying to go back to your normal life, having to compartmentalize what you have witnessed and how it corrupts your previously trusting view of the world. Imagine now instead of feeling weirded out by horror, to feel weirded out by casual normalcy and superficiality after witnessing such a trauma.) I sorta hate that the play doesn't have a clear ending, but rather forces us as viewers to determine what was true or false, what the conclusion is or isn't. But that is also what make this play stick with you after the fact, as you churn it over and over in your mind and heart. I dare you to watch these performances and not come away moved, and potentially changed. It's almost a civic duty to watch this play, rather than sidling into the theater as a passive form of entertainment. My companion felt it was too triggering, and felt traumatized by the content of the play. I say to that: Well, pal, then you are living your life on autopilot and are not paying attention to what is going on in the world. And maybe you needed this wake-up call. What we do with the information we are forced to confront is up to us.

    All horrible experiences for sure, but what about the performers? They're trying to put on the best possible show. The last thing they need are distractions. It's takes incredible focus to deliver. Audiences think they're watching a movie on their couch. There's absolutely a contract between audiences members themselves and performers. Unless instructed to, or your at a panto, sit down, be quiet, and let the magic happen. And ban the obligatory standing ovation too.

      Totally agree about it being distracting for the actors! 👏👏👏 I would love to make a Part 2 and invite a professional performer to share their perspective on audience etiquette. Thanks for watching!

      Yes please! I would love to hear from a professional performer’s perspective on audience etiquette (especially entrance applause and their thoughts/experiences on obligatory standing ovations)!

    Thank you for your review of OUAM! I saw the show at NYCC to see Sutton Foster (try to see her whenever she’s on stage). She and the all star cast did not disappoint, gave professional and good performances. I enjoyed the show (first time I had seen it but was familiar with The Princess and the Pea) but did not find myself laughing as much as the other audience members. I appreciate hearing your thoughts and while I won’t be seeing the Broadway production, I’m glad you got to see it. I did not think the show needed a transfer to Broadway but am glad more people will have an opportunity to see the fairytale with a talented and seasoned cast and professional orchestra. There were many families with young children and people of all ages at the matinee I attended. It wasn’t my favorite show, but I thought the cast and orchestra were great. I agree about the missed opportunities based on your review, as well as many others’ reviews. I was particularly surprised to learn that no major set enhancements had been made for Broadway. The only main change I heard about was that half of the cast is new. Lastly, I agree that the role of Fred fits Sutton’s talents very well and am glad that Michael and Nikki also made the transfer to Broadway. I hope anyone who sees the show enjoys it! You mentioned in your first video that you performed in this show - What role did you play? Do you still act today? I’m glad your channel exists, I am a huge Broadway and theatre fan in general!

      I'm happy that I got to see it too! It really was nice to hear the music with a full orchestra. I do think it's smart that the production is a limited run with a quick transfer to LA. We'll see if the Broadway transfer pays off during awards season. I played Prince Dauntless :) I no longer perform regularly. My focus has changed to more behind-the-scenes responsibilities. I'm glad you found my channel! Thank you for commenting, and I am excited to discuss more theatre with you!

    I’m curious about Death Becomes Her. I know it’s a movie but haven’t seen it yet. While I enjoyed watching Smash on TV, I’m indifferent about it coming to Broadway. Enjoyed the NYCC production of Mattress (first time seeing the show) with Sutton Foster (big fan of hers) but don’t have a desire to see the Broadway production due to the material itself. I’m a bit curious about Swept Away, Boop!, and Gypsy. Maybe Happy Ending and Tammy Faye sound interesting, too. However, the show I really want to see is Stereophonic, which closes January 5th. I know it’s a play with music but love the cast album. Have you seen Stereophonic? As of now, there’s not a musical lined up for this new season that I must see… yet. Thanks for the video! ❤️🎭🎶

      I have not had the chance to see Stereophonic yet, but I hope to see it soon! I really enjoyed their Tony performance. I agree with you about Maybe Happy Ending and Tammy Faye. The premise of MHE especially sounds really unique! Thank you for watching!
