Review: Korean hand / index finger guard for use with KTBs / Korean Bows.

A review of a simple hand / index finger guard used in Korean Traditional Archery (KTA) for use with KTBs. It protects the index finger from string / arrow nock contact. It feels soft and luxurious to use compared to the low level paid from too much shooting. It was added as a freebie by Ace Archery (@나현정-u4n) Korean when I ordered the Cheonjigung in May 2024. I didn't use it for a while, but w...

awesome release!
@@bildogaggins8196 Thanks. I need to change the bow hand movement a bit. It's a bit too high and puts pressure on the outside part of my wrist. I think the current state of the Cheonjigung grip (unmodified) is too big. I stuck the jumpi with super glue and is really difficult to remove now. I'll see over Xmas if I can slowly cut it apart safely to reuse it, and modify the zoom to feel like the YMG shape.
Nice. You certainly have amassed a collection of fine bows. Thank you for sharing your journey into Korean archery. Can I ask what kind of glove you are using on your right hand for thumb draw? I have been experimenting with many and have not found one yet that I am sold on
@@jimbrunett5025 Thanks. There's so many bows, I'm trying to see what they are like. I am using a index hand protector on my right hand. ruclips.net/video/da9pAKikS9I/видео.html. Doesn't help as suck with thumb draw, but feels luxuriously soft and gentle for string twist. On my left, I am using a car fingerless driving glove, as the jumpi and hard edges of the zoom barrel on the CJG gave me a callous and then ripped it off back in the summer. It's the only bow I am using a glove on the bow hand when I take it out.
Good shots! I loke the sound!
Thanks! Yes. When gojachaegi/ Khatra is down properly, you only hear the swish of the string. I know when I do something wrong when I hear a scrape (from rayskin arrow pass) or arrow slap.
@@KTBIOM Yes the same here. When I hear the arrow hitting the arrow pass I know that my form is not good.
I have a tar tar and a hun bow, i need to get a korean bow, I've been looking at the low budget alibow seygue
The Alibow Segye has the same branding as the Cheonjigung. The symbol of the three legged crow. I've not shot it but it seems to be held in good esteem from what I've seen online. It's a bit short at 115cm string. This CJG is 119cm string. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-legged_crow#:~:text=In%20Korean%20mythology%2C%20it%20is,%ED%83%9C%EC%99%95%3B%20%E5%A4%AA%E7%8E%8B%3B%20lit.

You're welcome. I'm very curious and love history and mythology.
@@KTBIOM shooting thumb draw is a great way to feel part of history,
@kevinmaughan4290 It feels very natural to me, especially with a long draw.
Awesome shots ✨️😃
Thank you. 👊🏹👍 The CJG has gone from feeling like a monster to a kitten since the YMG.
In Sweden we commonly use linseed oil for protecting wood. It has the benefit of preventing molds and fungi. As a result of it being common in Sweden, linseed oil can be found super cheap at your local IKEA! Now that I think of it, I think it is common in paint and art supply stores all over as well...
@@0ooTheMAXXoo0 Yeah. It's used in the UK to look after wooden handle tools and famously for cricket bats. As you say it's important create a water barrier and prevent mold / fungus. I have not seen it recommended for birch bark bows, but could be used too or at least worth experimenting with. A quick Google showed this advice for use on a birch bark handle knife. "The most common advice is to use boiled linseed oil (NOT "linseed oil compound")."
Man this is a beast
Yes. As much a step up from the CJG to YMG as the CJG was to the SMG. The CJG now feels quite tame by comparison. It's funny how your body can reassess and get used to the higher load so easily. My limiting factor, seems to be, my belief in myself.
that's exactly what im using it right now!

@@robertclarke7807 Thank you for suggesting it and thank you for watching 👊👍🏹
I use one made by the French archer Olivier and it works excellent. For example, if the string is very thin and the nock is loose, there is no slipping and it prevents dry fire and protects your index finger. But that idea you showed makes a lot of sense and it seems that it doesn't slip at all.. thanks for sharing. Happy Holidays 👊🙂
@@miguelveratraditionalarche9374 Interesting. This won't prevent a dry fire but just makes me focus on one shot without the distraction of a broken skin or pain. 👊👍🏹

Hello I have question Whats the difference between the ymg and hwarang? what would you recommend
@@wannabearcher5680 My understanding is that Dr Duvernay sources YMG to sell under his brand Hwarang. www.hwarangarchery.com/ He was the only way of getting a YMG outside of Korea for a while. I think in the past he also sold SMG as Hwarang. As such other than cosmetics YMG and Hwarang are just as good.
@KTBIOM Thank you. I had a black shadow from freddie archery so I'm considering upgrading to a more premium korean bow. There's just many options to choose from!
@wannabearcher5680 Yeah. I know what you mean. I started with. A black Shadow but didn't like the handle.
@@KTBIOM I'm trying to checkout on ymg website. I'm based in UK. What's the best method for checkout? Payco? Npay? They don't seem to have PayPal option 😅
You can't. Website is domestic only. You need to email Mr Kim. Use the email at the foot of the page and send him a screenshot of your order options. Other issue is that you need to pay with a direct bank transfer.
Congratulations on the new bow Can't wait for your progress videos. I've just started Asiatic archery and was curious about the leather device on your draw index finger. Is it a finger protector of some sought?
@@robertclarke7807 Yes. It was a freebie added to the Cheonjigung order by Ace Archery. I hadn't thought about this but my index finger was getting sore from string twist. I'll do a quick review next weekend and show what it is and how it looks. Quite simple to make with the right skills / tools.

amazing
@iaintheater6027 Thanks.
Can I ask you which Korean bow of yours has the best overall shooting performance?
@@jimbrunett5025 Sure. I did a series of videos KTB shoot off to answer this very question which i had. The 50# Daylite Archery Majesty won that shoot off. A solid, reliable, predictable and forgiving bow. It's 64#@32" and absolutely perfect for me right now. I didn't really want it to win, but I am impressed with it's performance.
Merry Christmas ! This a very fast bow. Looks beautiful!
@@Slingshotsbowsandknifes-tm4ev Thanks. I'll find out one day how fast it actually is. But yes. It seems to teleport arrows to the target.
Thanks for new video! I have been waiting for it. And what a bow!!! mine is just 45 pounds and I am struggling with it lol. Take good care for your elbow(left), stay hydrated during your training. Most of all, happy and merry Christmas.
@@이승표-k9l Thank you. 3 fingers did my elbow in. Thumb draw feels good with every weight. With practice you will soon be comfortable with your bow. Keep up the good work. Merry Xmas to you too.
You shoot very heavy poundage. Do you think the same bow in lesser poundage would lose any performance?
@@jimbrunett5025 Other than a bit of speed, I think this bow in lower poundage would perform well. It's slightly shorter than other bows same size for size. The shape of the limbs slightly leafy and tapered at the arrow pass means it has a narrower arrow pass than most other KTBs. Both Agama Green and Armin Hirmer have tested the lower poundage Horn version and it seems quite good. I really like this bow.
@ thanks for answering. I enjoy your videos. I am also Latinate about archery and now I’m obsessed with these Korean style shooting. I started very low poundage as the thumb draw was so awkward at first.
@jimbrunett5025 Thank you for your comments and I am glad you enjoy the videos. I started thumb shooting before I got a thumb ring, with the 35# Freddie Archery Black Shadow. First raw, then with motorcycle gloves, then a leather tab, and finally the cheap metal thumb rings. A good sized thumb ring makes a world of difference. I am now at the stage that pulling my bows 3 fingers hurts my forearm as I not used to the strain, but I can use the thumb with no problems. Different tendons and muscle groups.
The craftsmanship I’ve seen on a few ymg bows seems sloppy, but outstanding performers
Other than a few blemishes on the birch bark, seems OK for now. Not sure if goja is meant to be offset or bent at this stage. Will keep an eye on it.
@@KTBIOM I’m waiting the arrival of a 45# KTB2 bow. How do you think they compare?
@@jimbrunett5025 Kaya KTB 2 or Freddie Archery Authentic KTB2? I have not shot either so have no comparison basis. Just whatever is available on YT for comparison.
Thank you for answering my questions. I like hearing about these bows as I have become very interested in these koerean bows and thumb draw. I have always shot traditional and have a few longbows and recurves. What nock do you use on string? Brass or tie your nocks?
@@jimbrunett5025 Just a single nock on top, except on the Majesty. I cocked up and put it too low, so put another in and now sits between both. I usually use serving material.
It looks great. Good bet it's lightning fast. I too like the challenge of trying to control a powerful bow.
Yeah. I'm waiting for 200 spine arrows. Once I get and test them, I'm hoping to do a speed test of the YMG and CJG which is much overdue. Might also redo the Majesty for a baseline. Need dry weather, not too sunny and little to no wind.
@KTBIOM The weather has been repeatedly awful. I would say don't rush into doing speed tests although you do look to have been pulling it with confidence.
@mrln247 Yes it has been recently. I was getting some sideways arrows with the CJG and actually hid a vane on the chronograph bending it. Hoping I can improve my release and experiment with stiffer arrows to get better flight. It will take some time, as seen with the CJG but will happen. Maybe in the spring.
what is website for ymg bow? Thanks
@@Ronnietay269 goongdo.com/mall/index.php
Hello, I have been enjoying your content for a while now, and I have grown more invested in Korean style bows because of it 🙂. I'm currently saving for my next purchase, which is a step up from what I currently own. Currently, I have my eyes on the SMG, Cheonji, and Monarq. Which of the bows in your collection offered you the most pleasurable shooting experience? Also, in your opinion, which would you recommend overall? I hope you have a wonderful day, thank you.
@@ReignXp SMG are not the same as they used to be. Cheonji is good but tricky to get. Knowing what I know now, and if I could only had one bow, I'd just have the Daylite Majesty. They're relatively affordable, Daylite delivers fast, they have good pedigree, and a good after sales warranty for peace of mind. The Monarq has a good reputation and I would recommed it as a first Korean bow.
@@KTBIOMthanks so much!🙂
Nice looking bow and it seems to perform well, happy new bow! Just curious as to why you use such high poundage bows. Not a criticism - just interested. I mainly shoot "Clout" (180yds) and 30 to 35# is plenty with my Korean bows using wooden/carbon arrows. Back in the 90's I damaged my shoulder by using heavy bows and have seen many archers have similar problems.
@@johnf3f810 I get a real buzz out of it. The more effort I put in, the more enjoyment I get. Could be a dopamine thing. It's been a steady progression. With each bow, I've gone up in weight, and each one has felt more satisfying than the previous one. For me, it's not accuracy or hitting the target that is fun. If it was I might as well shoot a crossbow or compound. For me, I like to be able to shoot a bow, with all my body, at a boss, without breaking any arrows. I'd rather have a 12" group, than a 3" group, to minimise breaking arrows. I do it for fun. I also don't want to injure myself. I am learning technique too. It's not just about strength. sites.google.com/view/beyond-strength/home#h.p_ZRotrVkXU_kt Over here there is no clout, so I shoot short-ish distances, and I prefer a flat trajectory that higher poundage bows provide. Sorry to hear about your injury. It's a real concern to me, as I don't want to have to stop archery.

Hello! Looking for your new English language video. I just want to update you that I finally made my first hit the target yesterday and today I did three hits (out of 5 arrows cause 1round is shooting 5 arrows). If I hit 5 in 1 round (5 out of 5), I will get a title "Jeob Jang". In my mind, I am trying not to follow such a thing, I just want to clear my mind and being myself with my bow. But in real I want to get the title in short time. I know you practice hardly and over here in the other side of the earth, I am doing the same thing. So, Cheers mate!
@@이승표-k9l Great to hear about your progress. Grades, ranks and points can be very distracting. I think this is why archery teaches humility. All we can do is have more practice, and to practice more. Keep up the good work 💪 👍

@@Slingshotsbowsandknifes-tm4ev Thanks. Trying. Always practicing
@@Slingshotsbowsandknifes-tm4ev Depends on what you like. Traditional or modern? I would recommend a Korean grip rather than slim ones. Merlin Archery has a selection of bows in the sub £200 range.
