The Black Phone - Short Story vs. Movie - Adaptation Station (S2E1)
Dude in plaid...too awkward. I mean good reviews. But chemistry is awkward
I haven't read the book but the movie is a 10!!! The actors are great!! 😊
I know 2 years old but as you asked being a Stephen King fan I'd rate The Green Mile 9.9/10 and Shawshank 10/10 I've watched both several times, I got in to horror books at 9 years old grew up reading Stephen King and James Herbert
Stephen King? "The Dead Zone". "The Shining" and "Doctor Sleep". "Misery"
They got the best actors for that movie, they look very young, like in their early 20s and Jimmy Blevins like 15. The movie is nice to watch.
Neat idea. Adaptation station i mean where one brother does movie first other does first book.
I remember the bittersweet ending of the book in which the cop notices the look Tad's wife gives him when he laughs *exactly* like Stark. He realizes that, no matter how it ends, she is never going to forget that there IS something of the monster in her husband. Tad will be name dropped in a few of Stephen King's subsequent novels, both for his books and his fate. I felt like The Dark Half was an ok book, with... something, I don't know what, that made it far more entertaining for me than it should have been, given how kinda unpolished it feels, but I haven't seen the film, yet. I would like to add to amthatdad3450 suggestion of Dolores Claiborne. Kahy Battes has said multiple times that Dolores Claiborne was her favorite role she ever done, and said she loved the film, which is something, considering the roles and films she made.
Dolores Claiborne is a great Stephen King book/movie. And I haven't seen The Dark Half in years but I remember liking it, now I'm kind of curious about the book.
I don't think either of us has watched or read that one, so now that's on the list for a future episode! Thanks for the recommendation!
Loved Dolores Claiborne, too! Word of advice if anyone is going to read/watch it, though: Don't come with expectations, because it is one of King's non-horror stories. Which, honestly, usually tend to be my favorite part of his works.
I actually dug them both pretty equally. Bautista was amazing. Both endings were kind of duds for me. Book was probably a little better but man it was brutal.
The book was good. My favorites, though, are The Shining, Pet Sematary, and I like his earlier short story collections.
Do you guys have a podcast? As a truck driver I would listen to you two talking about books for miles on end.
We've definitely talked about doing a podcast. As two guys with full time jobs, I think it doesn't immediately hit the top of our to-do lists, but we're glad to know someone's interested! You may just be the push we need! -Ryan
Yes, this was very kind of you to say 🙏 We might just have to find a way to do it! -Dillon
Mark Wahlberg as Holden Caulfield is the absurdity that I'm here for.
I love that this channel exists to actually spell out the argument of whether or not the book is actually better than the movie, and why.
I was a fan of Stephen King growing up. The biggest book I ever read was Insomnia. (Imagine my surprise when the movie had nothing to do with the book!) I never read the Dark Half, but I loved the movie. Thank you for this video. I look forward to the next.
The book was awesome, at least 9th grade me thought so
I didn't know they made an adaptation of insomnia, though sounds like not worth the time
I actually really adore both versions. Although I wouldn't mind seeing a more faithful film adaption of the book.
I would love to see a faithful adaptation of the book! It would be really interesting to see on screen. -Dillon
The book was so much superior to the movie. What an amazing cast that they didn't use well. And bad writing.
@somebrothers Now do the audiobook! The woman who narrates is perfect!
There’s also a great interview where Glazer and other guy wrote faithful adaptation of the book, found it too long and expensive, then started cutting the script until they got to the minimalist masterpiece they shot. Same thing happened w Zone of Interest too it seems, although not quite that far
Watch movie first, then read the book. Book > movie. Incredible adaptation in that it doesn’t use 95% of the book. Maybe higher. Still room for a one season streamer adaptation... Wish Michel would do a sequel novel, still a LOT more meat in that premise and characters
No contest, the book was better. The movie wasn't horrible mind you, but if you read the book first (as I did) it's just kinda Meh.
You forgot Rings (2017) which claims Spiral as one of its inspirations.
Books that should be made into films or T.V shows-Anything by George Pelecanos! He was one of the main writers of the greatest show of all time: The Wire ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Wow, I'm absolutely going to check out his stuff now! I'm a big fan of The Wire. Recently finished watching it through for the second time. Thanks for the recommendation! -Ryan
@@somebrothers Yes, Pelecanos is an incredible writer and is also the co-creator of 'The Deuce' and 'We Own This City' on HBO along with David Simon, but my current favourite show is Tokyo Vice, an absolute masterpiece of a Yakuza crime drama series loosely based on true events. It's streaming on Max in the U.S and BBC IPlayer in the UK-All the best from the other side of the pond 🏴👍🏽 Sean
I thought the book was beautiful in the way things were described. I thought it was a bit problematic though especially with the schoolgirl in the end. I have yet to watch the movie but I plan to.
The girl in the hospital who's shieled from TV's is taken from thr Japanese Ring 2.
There's also the 1995 TV movie, the South Korean remake of the 1998 movie, etc.
The best English teacher ever.
🙏🙏🙏
A good movie adaptation but no where near the best Crichton adaptation. A fantastic book. Easily Crichton's best book IMO. My favorite book ever!
spiral is definitely a great book. coffin in the sky, a short story in the fourth book, is crazy.
Plenty there to keep you guys out of mischief for a while. Happy reading to you.
The book was terrible in my opinion. Nothing made sense and nothing happened.
Say what? A freaking UFO made a visit, the horrible thing with yellow raincoat man, the Vodsels release and hunt. Did you just read the cover? I’m concerned
I didn't really like any of them. I watched a bunch of these movies last year. And ju-on. I think they kinda merged into one thing for me. Then last week I saw Spiral on shudder so I watched that. And then watched ringu 2 again... But didn't really remember it which just goes to show how forgettable it was to me. I did like the change of tone of spiral, I liked the more realistic detective type of angle. But the director/writing was so bad that the movie was a mess and made no sense.
I read a non fiction book about how emotions are formed where the author described a reluctant first date. She was surprised by the feelings she had during dinner and that it could turn out that she was actually attracted to this man. She agreed to a second date, they said their goodnight, and she promptly went home and threw up. She had the flu.
Interesting . . . so the symptoms of being sick really are similar to the feeling of falling in love!
Nice review!
I actually love this book a lot and most of Márquez, haven’t seen the movie yet though, maybe I won’t haha. Great video though as always keep it up!
🙏
pshh i liked it
Sixth Sense. Pretty sure it's the only one I saw. Wanna see Unbreakable.... maybe that will...break...the top of the list
It's the best Bruce Willis superhero movie since Die Hard! 💪👩🦲
My Bad- I see you already did!
I agree about the ending of the book,it blew my mind and left me with so many questions.Another suggestion is UNDER THE SKIN with Scarlett Johanson- a strange coincidence
Holy Cow! I am Cheryl Brashear Thank You so much for this!
Thank you for the recommendation! 🙏
A host of a podcast I listen to said that he liked Jackie Brown the most out of all Tarantino movies because it “has heart.” I didn’t know what he meant by that until I watched the movie, and I have to agree. I loved the movie and I guess the larger story as it features such a strong female lead character (with Pam Grier absolutely nailing the role).
Should they remake the Sphere movie? We think it deserves a reboot! Check out which actors we chose to recast as the characters from the book: ruclips.net/video/WmJN9ExN2cY/видео.html
Y’all should do the rest of the series! There’s no content on them on RUclips.
Stay tuned! 📻
Good taste in music I must say. Original Invasion of the Body Snatchers movie is circa '50s. Donald Sutherland was in a good '70s version
If this ain’t good imma f y’all up!
Just stumbled across your video in my feed. Excellent list of faves. Subscribed!
I was like this is interesting until we got to 1 and it was Barbie 🤣
Yeah, but have you watched Barbie? 👀
@@somebrothers I have and it wasn’t to bad but not even close to the best movie!
Fair enough, I was just making sure you weren't knocking it before giving it a chance! What do you think was the best movie you saw last year? (And thanks for watching, by the way!)
My favorite movie I watched in 2023 was prisoners (2013) starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman. It really got me started into my recent binge of thriller movies and the acting and storytelling kept me hooked the whole time. Also just watched whiplash for the first time tonight and I may already have my favorite movie of 2024 locked in 😹
i've been enjoying Jake Gyllenhaal movies lately, but i haven't seen that one. Need to check it out!
i said Kate Beckinsale when i meant Kim Basinger-sorry Kim!!
I haven’t read King Lear yet but it’s on my TBR for this year.
My dad had an original copy of The Andromeda Stain he kept asking me if I had seen just before he died last year in 2022. Wish I could’ve found it for him, he was always convinced it was worth some money or maybe it was just his favorite book.
I'm sorry that you lost your dad last year. The Andromeda Strain remains one of my favorite all-time books and one of the ones I've re-read the most. I hope you are able to find that copy or maybe just pick up a different copy as another little thing to remember him. -Ryan
You should do reaction videos to the show, haha. (I'd watch that, though, seriously.)
