Things to do in Kichijoji Tokyo ll Speaking Only Japanese for a Day ll Intermediate Level
Sharing my favorite spots in my favorite Tokyo neighborhood while speaking only Japanese for the day. Not gonna lie this was rough and I almost didn’t post it because..well.. I’m super embarrassed and it was hard to see all of the mistakes I made caught on film. BUT I do think it’s important to share the journey and not just the success on the end, so decided to be vulnerable and put this out there anyway.

the places & experiences look interesting - could have a walking tour group :D may want to join
I always wanna say Japan has one of the most interesting and vibrant cultures I’ve ever seen and it’s always just a blast seeing videos and hearing about it but then I remember I look like a discord moderator and whenever I say that it comes across very differently than what I want it to
wow!! this was such a cool video, I really liked both of your Japonese! Gives me hope to get good at it one day!
Thanks so much for saying that, and for watching!~ ^^ 頑張りましょう~
Are any/all of those quarantine/vaccination proof/etc policies still in place in Japan as of 11/14/2024??
Nope! There are no more Covid measures to enter the country~ ^^
Thank you for this video.
Thank you for watching ^^
This was so good you guys are funny together!
can u share where u stay ? so nice co sharing house
Yeah! My share house was through Oakhouse in Fussa ^^
Thank you for your introducing Japanese tradition😊
Thank you for watching 😊
Were attractions and restaurants closed during NYE and the first few days of the new year ?
looking to visit during that time too
Sadly yes. All of the good places were closed the first week of the month. We are a lot of Konbini food 😆
So when applying, do you need to have a degree? I get a lot of mixed answers that you do need one or you don't
You do need one for a working visa

Did you have a visible tattoo? If I were a recruiter for a teacher in a public school or any professional job in banking, IT, etc, candidates with visible tattoos would be the first elimination. It's because they won't be taken seriously in Japan even as hair-dressers or make-up artists, let alone bankers, lawyers, or even soldiers. There is only one prism for the selection; is he/she is suitable for a public school teacher in Japan?
why u fine
Immediately love Jason in the luxury apartment for saying "his n hers, or hers n hers, or his n his" to the dual sinks. 💜
Righttt, he’s literally the best real estate agent 💕
So cool! Your Japanese is good!
Thank you I’m tryinggg 😆
Mam help me to get job as a teacher 😂
So cool!! What month was this?
This was in April! ^^
What's shadowing?
Good question! It's when you listen and repeat sentences or paragraphs in your target language. Super helpful!~
I also get ony 5 paid days off per year and ZERO japanese holidays.. working as a caregiver. It is really really tiring. Im exhausted after every shift. Patient ratio is 10 patients is to 1 main careworker and at night shift 20 patients is to 1.
Omg I'm so sorry to hear that, it sounds rough....がんばってね
Do you have their website link ?
I don't have a link but you can find them with a quick google search "Oakhouse share house Japan" ^^
hey, cool content but it will be better if you mix the 2 microphones sound. It is a litte bit annoying when voice comes from different channels
Ahh sorry I'm new to using 2 mics, I'll try that next time!
I do not have that Kyoto coworker friend. This is very helpful, thank you so much for your input! I know for one, really apricate it!
I’m so glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching ^^
Which is more convenient and cheep public transport or renting car for 2 person
Public transport is usually cheaper. If you’re in a major city like Tokyo, Kyoto, Sendai, etc 100% def take public transportation. There’s no street parking and driving between cities gets expensive with tolls. BUT if you’re going somewhere off the beaten path in a rural area where there’s only like 1 bus per hour, or sometimes completely inaccessible by public transport, I’d recommend renting a car. You’ll be able to access a lot more places and it’s wayy more convenient. Some bus routes in the countryside stop running by 4pm 💀
@@ChefinJapan does japanese tolls are that much expensive and it's hard to search parking
Thank you! I’ve been wondering how long it might take to pick up a rental!
Hi! Your trip look amazing can you give out the name of your hotel and restaurant. Thanks!
Hey there, pretty good rundown. You did leave out arguably the best/most stable Eikaiwa companies though. Both Berlitz and ECC were not mentioned, however, it’s pretty rare for them to recruit fresh off the boat people. I work at Berlitz on weekends for some extra pay and they’re pretty good people, albeit everyone’s 10 years older than me or more.
Ahh thanks for sharing! That's good to know!
Looks lovely, thanks for sharing
Where?
Are those Totoro puffs vegan?! 😍
They are unfortunately not vegan but there are some good vegan bakeries in Tokyo! Universal Bakes in this area (Shimokitazawa) is my personal fave~
Who is your tour guy?
He’s my good friend Taku! Not actually a tour guide but knows a lot about history! ^^
Finally moving to tokyo in 25 days 😅 Gonna need to get an apartment 😅
Ahh good luck! Def try Apts.jp !!
Do you teach 12 month? In the states school is not 12 months
Yes, even when the kids are on summer vacation teachers are expected to come into school for most companies. There are a few that allow the foreign English teachers to have off for the summer vacation (which is one month long in August). One of those Companies is Altia.
Thank you 🙏🏼 Sabrina 🇫🇷🇬🇧
Thank you for watching ^^
Hi. Did you have any TEFL course in your resume while applying for the non Jet jobs? I am currently taking one and hope it might give me a slight boost in the selection process. Gonna apply for JET too but I do know that the likelihood of rejection is quite high. That's why I'm entertaining a lot of other options as well.
I did not have any certifications and I was offered 3/4jobs I applied for ( I didn’t get an interview for JET). I think it does look good to have certifications on your resume!
Kodaiji is also known for their night time illuminations, especially during spring and autumn. Visited the bamboo forest during autumn at night and its amazingly beautiful
Ahh that’s so good to know! I’ll have to look out for them~
The JET Programme is not a company. It's a program run by the Japanese government. I don't think they do subsidized housing, in general. I did have a subsidized apartment when I worked in the JET Programme and paid about $60 a month for rent. But, not everyone gets that. The apartments are for public school teachers, so all my neighbors were teachers. But only a few of these apartments were set aside for foreign English teachers. There were many more JETs who did not live in the subsidized housing than ones that did. I'll say the apartment complex had about 24 apartments and 5 of them were foreign English teachers...
Vegan for the animals ❤
Hello, do we have to book the bus from gotemba to subashiri 5th station ? Thanks
You don’t have to book it, I got my tickets right before the climb at the station ^^
Looks lovely, thanks for sharing again !
Thank you for watching ☺️
From what I’m told, Jet is highly competitive so it probably makes sense to apply to a company not paying as much first to get the experience then look into Jet you want to make a little more money
That’s true! Something to note though is JET only hires from abroad so you’d have to go home after your first job before applying to JET ✈️
are you doing well ? since when did you started making this kind of videos ?
I’m doing well! Thanks for asking ^^ I’ve been making Japan-related content for about 3-4 years now. Real estate videos though are a bit new for me though. I have a few more like this coming soon 😁
Wish they made it easier to freelance 😢😢
It is rough out there for freelance 🥲
Hey Amber, Thanks for the great content. What about non-natives? I am a teacher with +8 years of experience, a BA and MA in Teaching English, and a CELTA. Which companies do you think I should apply to? I see that most job offers ask for Natives. Thanks a lot!
Hello, I’m not too sure about this since I’ve only applied as a native English speaker but I l’ve heard that Gabba is open to non-native foreign English teachers. (Not sure if it’s true though but def check it out!) Unfortunately I’ve also heard that they’re not a good company to work for but maybe a good foot in the door into Japan?
@@ChefinJapan Thanks. Yeah makes sense. ❤️
As a foreigner i feel the interior layout abit weird. Only thing i like is the rooftop balcony of the first one.
The layout is a bit weird, def not for everyone 😆
The balance between work and living costs. Of course, the countryside is cheaper. There are a lot of laid-back people here.
welcome to japan!!! have a fan!!!
Yay thank you for joining!~ Happy to have you here ^^
Hi Amber :D I'm so glad I found your video. I was working in Japan until last year and now I'm going back, but I'm trying now, not to work as a regular employee, but as a content creator / freelancer, with several jobs. So I'm trying to figure out, which visa I need and how to apply. I feel that the process you describe is pretty much the same, that I had with my regular job as full time employee. And another friend of mine, has the same or a similar visa and she is a freelancer. So I think it's nearly the same process for me. :) But anyway, glad I found your video! It's so difficult to find the correct information online.
I’m so happy to hear that it was helpful! Best of luck with the applying process~ ^^
@@ChefinJapan Thanks!
I so wish I found this video before visiting Kyoto. I only tried 2 places on this list. I hope to go back someday 😢
Aww you’ll just have to come back again !! 😆
Ma'am, I'm currently doing PhD in English Literature from India. How to become an assistant professor of English Literature in Japan?
Hii I’m sorry I don’t have experience getting professor jobs here so I’m not sure. Maybe check the website of the school’s you want to apply to? 🤔
I’m looking at applying towards the end of my degree, with the hopes of transitioning into another career in Japan whilst I’m there to sponsor my visa. Is this possible?
Totally possible! I recommend completing you’re 1 year teaching contract before starting your next job though, but you can certainly start looking beforehand~
@@ChefinJapan Amazing! Thanks for the advice :)
