When we talk of value in relation to commodities, value is not embedded in commodities. It is a spectral-like objectivity that can't be reduced to a single commodity but only exists when commodities are set in relation to each other. So the value embedded in a single commodity is paradoxical, because that single commodity by itself does not have a value, only when it is set in relation with other commodities in market exchange. So we can talk of the value OF a commodity presupposing the aforementioned relations, but never the value IN a commodity. The socially necessary labour-time needed to produce a commodity is an average when all the abstract social labours are related to each other in the world market. This has nothing to do with the concrete labour that is embedded in the commodity in so far as it creates use-values.

"This is strange because you really wanted to see Marx kind of departing from Adam Smith, not saying "I accept the hidden hand of the market", that's what he does in chapter two of volume one, he says "I accept the hidden hand of the market", and of course what he's going to do is to say that the hidden hand is the hand of the laborer, that's what he does further down the line. The interesting thing about this is that whenever you ask any kind of conventional economist what do they think of Marx's labor theory of value, they'll say "well it's just a mystical kind of thing you know, it just happens you know, nobody can take that seriously", and than you say to them "well what about the hidden hand? Isn't that a mystical thing?", and they go "well no, that's the market, you know, that's the way the market is", and you say "why should I think of a market as being a hidden hand?". And you have a little argument of that kind and it turns out the hidden hand is just as mystical as Marx's theory of value, if not more so because Adam Smith does not say who's hidden hand it is, whereas Marx is definitely saying "well it's the hidden hand of labor that you've got to be looking at here", and the fact that Adam Smith ignored what was happening to laborers for the most part..." - David Harvey

Value is a subjective concept which is objectivized in the market. Costs of production which includes labor, capital (including robots) and raw materials and are factored into the market mechanism. Capital includes the organizational and innovative ideas of the owner excluding the parasites who speculate in the stock market or inherit their wealth. This is common sense. The rest is ideology. Having said that the modern enterprise is a private tyranny in which employees are worthless cogs and decide nothing about what to produce when to produce, where to produce, how to produce and what to do with the proceeds. This might lead to exploitation, but it is difficult to tell how much of the proceeds employees should receive. For instance, how much should a lawyer pay his secretary? Should his secretary participate in the decision? Is this a matter of democracy or exploitation?

It seems to me the crux of the matter regarding our "madness" is a failure to grasp the difference between the real world, where nothing can "grow" forever, and the abstract world of our symbols [which is all money really is, a socially constructed symbol], where numbers can theoretically grow to infinity. Unfortunately, the Marxists do not seem to appreciate that the human population cannot continue to "grow" forever either [but they do so love to throw around the "Malthusian" epithet at anyone who wants to bring in a little bit of biology]. And it's amazing to me that Harvey, in speaking of how we've been spreading around all that cement, laments the crisis of affordable housing but never connects the dots to climate change, given the large amount of GHG emissions generated by cement production. And of course he says nothing about the way the Earth's remaining wildlife habitat is being rapidly destroyed because of the competition to "invest" in crops to feed livestock, which we shouldn't be eating anyway, or "biofuels," which we shouldn't be burning! A new generation needs to go much further with the critique. Remember, the current economic system is only a belief system--it knows nothing about how ecosystems function--it's completely disconnected from the real world. And while we human beings alter ecosystems at our peril, we can CHANGE OUR BELIEFS at will!

The long and the short of it is that Marx did not attempt to describe capitalism as a rigid, monolithic, static system. As he very well realized, capitalism - like everything else in the world - is subject to change and evolution. Marx described the basic dynamic forces or tendencies that operate within it. The actual outcome of those forces in any given situation depends on many factors, including the correlation of forces between the working class and the capitalist class (as well as between different factions within the latter), the geopolitical context, the stage of development of capitalism in a particular region, historical and cultural factors, etc. One thing in common, though, of all capitalist systems, regardless of these differences, is that sooner or later they all generate war, chaos, destruction and misery. As Harvey has stated elsewhere, the way out of a crisis for capitalism (i.e. its recurrent, inevitable crises) is destruction (of capital, value and, ultimately, people).

You gotta love this guy. David is really fantastic some of the funniest ironic stuff on You Tube, Professor Dave, a most fitting even sympathetic bourgeois character himself (Central casting could not do better) takes us on a regular Mr. Magoo road trip ruclips.net/video/t8GTHXTEvIc/видео.html stumbling around the wacky theories of Karl Marx, elaborating his own illogical explanations of Kooky Karl’s bizarro roadmap of reality. Most informed people are aware Poor old Karl, led a crappy self-indulgent life, as a drunk, a rapist, and out right racist who’s life’s work was dreaming up new ways of updating ancient anti-Semitic prejudice with veiled 19c economic, social class mumbo jumbo, (labour theory of value anyone?) , and a big dose of delusional utopianism as the eschatological desert. It is nice to be distinctive in ones field and Kooky Karl has the distinction of cooking up the most failed ideology in the history of the world. Tried more often than any other - fails every time. Marxism Guaranteed to Fail Every Time. You can bet your life on it, as over 100 million victims already have. Watching David is like taking a ride with Mr. Magoo, as he explains his own understanding of the kooky circumstances of an unlikely theoretical excursion. Both Mr. Harvey and Mr. Magoo have that appealing and reassuring quality of the kind hearted patriarch, and as the observations swerve from unlikely to unnerving David offers ever more opaque (and entertaining) explanations for theoretical failures of Karl’s car wreck of a hypothesis. The only person who could out do Dave here would be Jim Backus. Imagine Jim Backus, revisiting his character of Thurston Howell III but now as a Marxist professor, yes that would be delicious (ruclips.net/video/jFqZhadwvG0/видео.html). Anyway adding a laugh track to this "series" might be a good next step,

Here is a clip that might help in understanding David Harvey, ruclips.net/video/_bdS2PjNAvg/видео.html It is of Yuri Bezmenov who defected to the west from the former Marxist superpower the “ Soviet Union” remember that bit of stunning stupidity that went on and on for 69 years? At 7.39 mentions half-baked intellectuals in the west, why would David Harvey flash to mind? As amusing as David’s tail chasing verbiage is -really he can be quite funny-- it is still embeds Kooky Karl's wacky materalist religion and anti-Semitic premise, ( read Kooky Karl's 1844 essay" On The Jewish Question"). There will always be the sad “believers” (and victims of) in Karl’s anti -Semitic “economic/social” theories, and his kooky "theory" always fails. Recalling the marxist/socialist utopias of the USSR( remember that"SUPERPOWER"), East Germany (remember them), Albania, Yugoslavia (remember them), North Korea, Cambodia, Czechoslovakia (remember them), Romania, Somalia, Ethiopia, China, Cuba, Mugabe land, Venezuela all evidence the absolute and appalling failures of Kooky Karl's social/economic hate based envy/theft “theories”. Sadly these failed Marxist Socialist states killed, murdered, starved, impoverished hundreds of millions of innocent people (in violation of the Jewish /Christian 10 commandments). How any moral person could continue the sad joke of “Marxism” is amazing. Dave here can be quite amusing ,really funny in his bourgeois manner …but his pseudo economic rhetoric is more geared to false hope, and emotional imaginings that justify an envy/theft culture than the real world realities of transcending authentic values (please read Hayek). Dave here could of chosen to live in any of the afore mentioned socialist utopias, and can sill choose so, Cuba, North Korea?, but no he lives in the most capitalist society he could find. One could cry but it is often better to laugh, …“Life is a comedy to those who think, a tragedy to those who feel.” I would suggest adding a laugh track - A very basic Reading List Karl Marx, Racist, By Weyl Nathaniel The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich von Hayek A World Without Jews. Hi Facepalm , Thank you for your observaions , yes kindergarten level argument is all one can do with poor old Karls rather incoherent ramblings. Karl's ramblings are well known to model a rhetorically closed self-justifying system, subjective definitions, an absence of natural economic or independent price signals, lack of internal consistency, the pagan religion of “historical materialism”, sectarian intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism a series of rather glaring epistemological problems and so on. It was just so much egocentric nuttiness- still appeals to nutty people today. If you have read Karl Marx, Racist, By Weyl Nathaniel you may have noted his quote from his 1844 essay “On the Jewish Question,” "What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his worldly God? Money. … Money is the jealous god of Israel, in face of which no other god may exist. Money degrades all the gods of man-and turns them into commodities. … The bill of exchange is the real god of the Jew. His god is only an illusory bill of exchange. … The chimerical nationality of the Jew is the nationality of the merchant, of the man of money in general." A sad racists comment but one that exposes his obsession with Jews and money. The one thing that was consistant with Karl was his Anti-Semitism. Lenin the mass murder and close follower of Karl , loved the quote “ Anti-Semitism is the socialism of fools” the inverse that “ Socialism is the anti-Semitism of the self- enpowering class” is just as true. At the end of the day the sad fact is that it is not possible to be a Marxist without being a racist. Karl’s obscuring rhetoric of class, capital, bankers, false consciousness, and so on hid the anti-Semitic characteristic of his ‘theories” and how they impacted (particularly in the west) Jews more that others. Karl himself was a drunk and failure he spent most of his life in debt and blamed the Jewish people for his own economic failures, a petty and vindictive egotist - his “theories” were his idea of revenge, a revenge designed to attract cult like followers. His followers of course set up all sorts of efforts like the USSR a real "superpower", East Germany, Albania, Yugoslavia, North Korea, Cambodia, Czechoslovakia , Romania, Somalia, Ethiopia, China ( now who knows?) , Cuba, Mugabe land, Venezuela all modeled themselves as Marxists states and all evidence the absolute and appalling failures of what they claimed to be. But all that being said ...or resaid... do you Facepalm know of any social construct that is a Marxist culture , really any size even a commune of 12 people, that has lasted any length of time? I would like a real example of a successful Marxist culture. All the best William

In the mean time please do not be too upset with my sense of what some might call “challenging humor”, trust me kooky old Karl doesn’t care, and you shouldn’t ether. Madness of Economic Reason? Compared to What ? Yes Yes Yes , When a kooky system cooked up by a 19th century nut like Karl Nutbar Marx utterly fails over and over and over again , his cult followers will of course find the fault is not with their sacred leader and most "sacred texts" but the world of reason....thus “ the madness of reason”. For the zombie cult followers of Kooky Karl his word is sacred, and consecrated by the deaths of millions, if his system does not work it is the fault of the world. The reality is Karl was a nut, a racist bigot, a drunk, never took a shower , was unemployable, smelled of horrid BO, raped the maid, wasted what ever money he could, and ultimately wasted his life, and due to his cult followers , Lenin, Stalin, Castro Brothers, Pol Pot, Tito, Mao and so on, millions of other lives. Here poor old Dave, one of Karl’s most distinguished cult followers goes on (and on) about value defined in Kooky Karl terms. If you want to talk about value, real value you are talking about, philosophy, religion, and yes theology, and so by quick extension the one true God of Abraham reveled by the Jewish people, now with 55% worlds population as adherents. Kooky Karl hated Jews and hid this behind his “materialist” values, an extension of his virulent anti-Semitic racism (see his 1844 essay on “The Jewish Question”). Karl in his hatred of the Jews , and the freedoms associated with Jedo-Christian cultures concocted a counter value system (or theology) based on materialism, envy, deciet and theft, all violations of Jewish law or Gods 10 commandments(suprise). In this amusing talk we see David’s dancing circumlocution around the ever-shifting subjectivities of Kooky Karls material “value” in relation to the ever-subjective “value” of "money value" (imagine him as a digital currency trader). As much fun as his talk is, it is a verbal shell game (also known as thimblerig), designed to evade a greater truth. …or like the shell game …sucker people. amazing.. you totally misunderstood everything. First of all Marx said Value is a social relation, it's labour embodied in a commodity, so therefore it's immaterial. Furthermore he talks about the value of commodities within Capitalism.. not some notion about the usefulness of philosophy or religion. As for your conspiracy theories.. Okay, good luck with that

Hi Raymond Thanks for your reply Yes Karl is easy to miss understand as his rather ( unwell) ego driven writings model a rhetorically closed self-justifying system, subjective definitions, an absence of natural economic or independent price signals, lack of internal consistency, the pagan wackiness of “historical materialism”, sectarian intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism a series of rather glaring epistemological problems and so on. It was just so much egocentric nuttiness- . But in all his " writings" it is difficult to miss understand his anti-Semitic problems, take this quote from his 1844 essay “On the Jewish Question,” or as it is also known " A world without Jews" which should clear things up regarding Karl Marx as an anti-Semitic racist. "What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering. What is his worldly God? Money. … Money is the jealous god of Israel, in face of which no other god may exist. Money degrades all the gods of man-and turns them into commodities. … The bill of exchange is the real god of the Jew. His god is only an illusory bill of exchange. … The chimerical nationality of the Jew is the nationality of the merchant, of the man of money in general." .......The words of Karl Marx a true anti-Semitic racist, words which underscores his obsession with Jewishness as a materialistic culture, at best an error. After writing " A world without Jews" Karl spent the rest of his life concocting screwy pseudo economic rationales for policies that inflicted disproportionate economic and social displacement on the Jewish people and culture followed by his own final solution of gradual “assimilation” and the elimination of the Jews as the answer to the “question” of the Jewish people. His mumbo jumbo, includes his ever- nutty “labour theory of value” , and his unique delusional utopianism as the eschatological “promised land”. Lenin the mass murder and close follower of Karl , loved the quote “ Anti-Semitism is the socialism of fools” the inverse that “ Socialism is the anti-Semitism of the controlling class” is just as true. At the end of the day it is not possible to be a Marxist without being an anti-Semitic racist. Karl Marx’s multivariate hostility to Jewish and Judeo-Christian values that define open and free western societies (Christendom) is a manifestation of his explicit anti-Semitic racism, a racism as well documented as it is denied by his sadly deluded followers. It is the same left wing anti-semitic racism that pervades the cultural Marxists, and socialist to this day, and more recently in the anti Semitic racism expressed by the Labor Party of Great Britain, news.sky.com/story/hundreds-of-anti-semitism-protesters-gather-to-tell-jeremy-corbyn-enough-is-enough-11305208 Yes Karl Marx like most people in mental distress is easy to miss understand , but his anti-semitism has been well documented. very sad but very true. This rather proves that you haven't the faintest idea of what you're talking about. The 'free' Western societies and values are exactly what forced Jews - like Karl Marx - to assimilate, lose their identity and in turn become self hating Jews in order to become palatable to a general population that is openly hostile to them and that had been hostile for 800 years before the advent of Capitalism. You throw a lot of empty words but a quick reading through Hannah Arendt's Origins of Totalitarianism should rid you of your confusion as to the roots of anti-semitism in Europe. But let's face it you're not really interested in a conversation, just propaganda and the lack of substance and historical grounding (done on purpose of course, otherwise your entire argument would crumble in 2 seconds and you're quite aware of that) in your general narrative is what gives.

@@friendofzeus Oh please ... let us keep it simple for you ... say the The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) you know came into being after the German socialist regime of 1933-45 , to prevent just that kind of abuse... anyway as is commonly known it was based on a long line of human development going back to yes Abrahamic Law, Natural Law , and the 10 commandments ... sad for the "socialists " but it like the 10 commandments the UDHR is about individual rights including property rights ... say , the right to own property alone as well as in association with others , see art. 17 ... or freedom of opinion and expression see art. 19, freedom of thought, conscience and religion; see art. 18 ( no denigrating "Religion is the opium of the people" one of the most frequently paraphrased statements of the RACIST and fake sociologist, fake economic theorist , remarkable Drunk, never bathing smelly man and Maid raping screw ball Karl Marx...lol). The transformation of the social relations to dis-alienate labor is exactly what Proudhon was proposing. Marx misrepresented Proudhon as if his goal was to maintain capitalist relations when in fact the proposal was to extinguish profiteering from the production system while giving each worker and each collective the full measure of their work, after which a demonetized economy could emerge.

I wonder that myself. All of Mr. Harvey's audio seems the same. It seems the same when he is on a panel, even though others on the panel can be heard clearly. I must assume he modulates His own voice to compensate for feeling he is too loud.

"Anti-value" as Harvey puts it is the negation of value when it isn't realized on the market i.e when it becomes a loss for the capitalist rather than a source of profit. I'd say it's a pretty succinct and sufficient term and explanation for how value actually functions. And useful for debunking the notion that Marx somehow blindly believed solely in the ltv when this part of his theory was very clearly apart of it from the beginning.
