This is a rare documentary made in 2001 for Channel Four, that examines the life and career of George Best shortly after he was given a controversial liver transplant. Their are some interesting archive footage and interviews I do not own any rights to this documentary (Images and music).
Awful teeth, emaciated faces & that'll be the British.
George had a life. The boring nobodies without interesting lives turned George into even more of a drinker. He couldn't have turned a full Hermit, so the alcohol helped him escape.
When your in mental and physical pain its only natural to choose a pain killer of your choice that will make you feel better. In georges case it was alcohol. If some one has got the flu then they will choose medicine to make them feel better! I cant see how this is any different, no one knows the pain he felt when he started drincking again! Plus with all that publicity alot great and alot bad.
George Best...the LEGEND❤
What a waste of talent, spent his childhood and youth kicking a ball about just to throw it all away for booze in his prime. He could have gone to Europe and challenged himself there
t t t alent
The celts came from Ireland 🇮🇪., that’s why we love each other Scotland 🏴. Xxxxxxxx
fck that i dont matty
A great footballer when he showed up sober! Wasted talent. Sadly, just another selfish drunk. Treated his Women badly too. He was demonised
What is this song played on trumpet as the background music? I love it!
George Best You are a Fantastic Football player You are the Best George Best Good bye the Belfast boy World legend Maradona Cruyff Pele George Best is the Best
George Best You are a Fantastic Football player You are the Best George Best Good bye the Belfast boy World legend Maradona Cruyff Pele George Best is the Best
Jeez he’s got some loyal mates, after united there was no where to go , he’d done it all !!! Rod marsh, Jesus he was 27 he could have gone to several English sides and tried to win stuff he could have gone to Italy or Spain , thing is he wasn’t disciplined at all , that’s why he will never be the greatest which some people think, Cruyff played top level till 37, and he was definitely the greatest player of the 70s, Pele & Eusebio played with there clubs till into there 30s then finished in the US at nearly 40 same as beckenbeaur , Best was at Bournemouth & cork Celtic , speaks for itself
He had done it all club wise. And to win what he won all in the same year at just age 22 takes some beating. European player of the year, british player of the year, english player of the year, english to goal scorer of the year, and he did win man utd the european cup in 1968, all that in the same year, and for a winger back then was unheard of to score 28 leauges goals alone, and always had to beat men to score. But how great it would have been to see this guy playing well past his peak to age 37 or 38 for man utd. The club let him down. Couse he had the natural fitness to keep playing as a forward to age 35,36. Then in midfield to age 38. He had great vision to do that and the skill and the remarkable speed of thought to just change a whole move in a split second to make a goal. Thats what all the worlds top true greats had. Like maradona and pele and beckenbauer. Messi had skill in abundance? I thinck? But not like these guys had. And they got it alot harder and werent protected in there day and on mud swamp potatoe fields.
@alanmctavish4802 Natural fitness!? No such thing, the man was on the piss constantly
4 bottles of wine and vodka?! fucking hell I think I'm bad!
I'm digging this
The peppy, reggae music really adds to the tragic nature of Best's alcohol addiction.
What is the song playing starting @ 0:40 ??
While this documentary maybe 20 years old, I enjoyed the insight into Best's personal life near the end of his life, none of that sensationalist stuff that reality TV today likes to dramatize.
I was once a contestant on Family Fortunes and was asked to name an alcoholic spirit. You should have seen the look I got when I said George Best.
Lived his life the way he wanted, not the way others wanted. So simple as that.
@@davidconway5074Yeah, wasted
Wifebeaters should be denied liver transplants and that is what Best was. A drunken wifebeater.
When was he a wifebeater?
So your saying your a wife beater .
What an idiotic comment, one word for you 🤡
@alslieve and when did you see george beat up his wife.?
George Best You are a Fantastic Football player You are the Best George Best Good bye the Belfast boy World legend Maradona Cruyff Pele George Best is the Best Danny van Strien Holland Europe

August 2021.....it was only in the last 5 min of the documtary that I remembered GEORGE has gone.....RIP ....never forgotten
Had a transplant ...& Started drinking again.....waste of space
What have you ever done??!!
Have a functioning transplant for nearly 10 years now (which has changed by my own nd my families life) I have been blessed to have been so lucky to get a second chance at life. That's what I have done
@@markd4462 that was done by a surgeon... from your high-horse morality you strike me as a typically smug 12 stepper...
@@richardmcgrath9729 Really - a transplant carried out by a surgeon. Gosh you are medically trained aren't you ? FYI you don't even know me - just so you know - I have an auto immune disease which caused my organ failure leading to me requiring a transplant - so has absolutely nothing to do with alcohol abuse. So go & 12 step yourself !
@@markd4462 so with your new liver your one contribution to life is smugly condemning George Best who entertained millions (both on the field and off) and was loved by both sides of his sectarianly divided homeland and even by Liverpool fans (like myself)...c'mon Mark D??!! (Is yr 'rap name)
What a fucking waste of talent, but compared to todays overpaid over hyped untaltented players, he would be the best in the world easy without a doubt
What a sad, sad story. And what a humble, nice and honest man. Both he and his mother (I've read; correct me if I'm wrong) died as alcoholics. Neither of them managed to tackle the fame. May both their souls rest in peace.
fame can really be a killer
😅
Such a joy literally..a joy to watch, .as a a Scottish kid, we all said Law was better than Best...but we knew, we knew... but Best, Law & Charlton...an Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman...but no bloody joke... how enriched we were to see them,,,they made Man U fans out of us wee Scottish kids...in our hearts it was Celtic 1st & Man U 2nd and Stein and Busby were GODS to us...oh Lord but am tearie-wearie just typing this..- greetin' like a bairn and am no ashamed of it and wee Jinky...and mebbe Andy Irvine taking off on one of his suicidal runs from his own 25, making our Scotland look like France in their pomp ... Truthfully, I can die happy, having lived through those halcyon days...my dad lived just a few steps from Matt Busby's house, no wonder my hert was seduced and captured...
Rip best
Why would anyone want to rip George best ? Violence is not the answer.
My hero
Tavy@ george best was the greatest player in the world from 1966 to 1972. But it shouldv been from 1966 to 1982. And at age 36 he couldve played in midfield or defence becouse he could tackle, head, and his passing long and short with both feet was sublime. He could read the game, he was the complete player!!! But addiction is a diffrent thing altogether. Its staying of drinck thats the hard bit not getting of it. R.i.p george !!!!!!!!!!!
Genius
a great
“Nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first understood.” Leonardo da Vinci.
Best new from an international point off view he had no hope a single class player..once he achieved it all from his club he had nothing left to play for the interest died out to to it up the good looks and the money he lived the dream most men can only Dream off
He looks ill here he’s yellow
Self inflicted alcohol abuse....that resulted in liver failure
A miracle he lasted past 45 three bottles of vodka a day at times. Sad but it's sad for homeless people who have no one. It's got me but you have to keep the faith a think.
Wud love to see more footage from the 70's...
A friend of mine many years later bought the bar in Marbella, which was directly across the street from the hotel he always stayed in. It was a small bar but it was George's regular bar. I often would sit there in the evening thinking back to the time when George was a regular at the height of his fame.
I love best ❤️ with all my heart 💓 can't wait to.meet the legend I love that guy beats any footballer ever best ❤️
I always remember his famous quote; I spent my money on wine women n song. The rest I squandered.
Like he squandered his liver transplant....
That's not right. "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars.... The rest I just squandered!"
If you feel injured please get help before you play sports again you can really fuck your body up if you dont listen to it even if you dont make it professional you still need to provide for your family
that was a completely different era.. no matter the sport everyone played injured .. not like nowadays we're athletes are pampered with incredible multi-million dollar contracts and get paid whether they play or not..completely different year of sports
Legend rip
When i die bury me next to best
It's so great to see the real George, not the bullshit buffoon invented by the media of the day. A humble, funny, generous and honest man, beaten by his addiction. George modernised the game single handedly at an incredibly young age. After 1966, the game changed forever and not necessarily for the better. As a fellow Northern Irishman, and some one who has struggled with alcoholism, George has always had nothing but my deepest sympathy, respect and gratitude. He gave his all, he was the best.
V. nicely put.
So you condone wifebeaating? Best was an alcoholic liver-wasting wifebeaating jail-bird.
Are you defending wifebeaters!
@@alslevie1986 Wise up.
@alslevie1986 why did you see george beat up his wife? And if its true then why has alex kept his name after they divorced. Has written a book or two about them. Will appear on any show for money to talk about a man that you claim beat her up. And all she does is talk nice about him and how charming he is...bla bla. She must be skint and has been for years now. And no where near what she looked like. She sunk to her lowest and a think she knows it by the way eamon holmes was looking at her as if to say a cant believe am hearing this crap. Alex went on there show 'this morning' to claim that georges spirit is around her and things move about the house. Like she felt as if some one touched her arm one day in the house and its happend a few times, her ciggarettes were moved to another room and other things as well. And her friends have had things moved to. I think its made up crap. As if george wouldnt have better things to do lol. Do your home work first mate. Ask alex for a date, Say you were related to george and thats you in. But am sure old alex will find her gold some where she always has but times not on her side. Angie is just as bad, his first wife. She kept his name and sold story after story for lots of money to the british press all through the 1980s when i was a kid. There she was at least 5 times a year in different papers saying the same old repeated storys about george. A think george said to that angie as well if its that bad then change my name we are divorced? So angie you are kidding no one. You are even telling storys that i told myself from my book. So how low does that make you, and change my name, you cant use my second name for money wich we all know thats what your doing. They went there seperate ways. But this leech kept his second name for money, but constanly got paid loads of dough for saying george was just a drunk and what? She was telling every one what they already knew. Then alex did the same. Woman are poisenend leeches, evil, greedy, can marry any man for money alone, a man cant do that. Men can only go with woman they like. Woman can go with any one just for money. And any one with no money.
my fathers best
We all would have gone for the Birds, LOL
