This song is very beautiful, with a lovely atmosphere, and when sung by a beautiful singer, everyone tends to think that it is about the love for one's father, as the title suggests. However, the hidden meaning is as follows. In fact, Lauretta's fiance is poor and cannot buy a wedding ring, so Lauretta impliedly threatens her father, Gianni Schicchi, by saying, "Come up with a brilliant plan to give my fiance Rinuccio enough of an inheritance to buy a ring! I want to buy a ring! When Lauretta says "I want to go to Porta Rossa," she means that she wants to go with her fiance Rinuccio to a jewelry store on Porta Rossa Street and have him buy a ring. So Lauretta needs to have very difficult acting and singing skills to arouse her father's sympathy while hiding her cunning nature. In that respect, the third Diva is not bad, but she sings a little too slowly. Maria Callas also exudes a certain atmosphere, but she exudes it too much.

I just listened to Anna Netrebko..and I am going for her as the "winner"..as in I liked her best all around.

Each is as different as it possibly can get and I'm certainly not going to pick a favourite, however: it's wrong to include Maria singing 'O mio babbino caro' on her last tour in circa 1972, which was far from being a sucess; Renata sings it technically perfect, but there's no sense of deep feeling or emotion; Caballé is wonderful and makes the aria stand out more than the others by her incredible "pianissimo" which she uses to great effect in the Puccini aria. perhaps overly so. Anna Netrebko's version is huge and seems over-amplified so it's not fair to compare her to anyone; Fleming gives a decent rendition with dramatic flair; I don't know how old she was in this particular video but as of 2024 she's into her 60's and still singing at the MET in "The Hours" so the lady has definitely got staying power. We can easily criticize so why don't we try and do what these great ladies do. We would, in a snap, realize that their art is all-round marvellous even with the slight flaws. It's quite unfair being so picky about an aria or a performance forgetting the super-human endurance it takes to sing opera at all. Thus, I venerate all singers who go out on stage from night to night and simply try to give it their best!

Love them both, but Shirley, just tops it. Living legend x

Cand ajungi la maturitatea vietii si treci prin viata, prin bune si rele, poti simti si intelege cu adevarat muzica. O traiesti, nu mai demonstrezi. Viata te face cel mai bun, suferinta te caleste si te face mai puternic! Desi am citit comentarii partizane impotriva Annei trebuie sa ma inclin si sa spun ca imi place mai mult decat compatrioata Angela Gheorghiu. Totusi, peste timp, cea mai mare emotie am simtit-o la Ileana Cotrubas. Aceasta arie este despre simtire si nimeni nu avea caldura lui Cotrubas!

Having .lived in the UK during to 70s and Shirley was and all always be the best. She has a much more of a mellow voice although Colin’s voice is strong it seems harsher than Shirley’s.

You cannot in any way compare these two divas because they each have a different style to a song that made it great. I saw both these women in concert and Shirley Bassey can bring tears to your eyes and some of the songs she sang because she was that soulful and powerful.Celine Dion could do the same thing but again they’re singing style was completely different but got the same result when you listen to them both.

I give the edge to Shirley. She has the knack of expressing her emotion and her ènergy and verve. It is more hypnotic !!!

Shirley stood alone in her era. Truly the greatest.

Who’s putting Gaga in the intro clip? She sings less convincingly than my sister, who was a fine, earnest, drama-theater hopeful in high school. Good. Solid. And she didn’t look like a damned rutabaga had replaced her head. And she was 5’8”, rather than a wonkily built 5’ like Gags. Sorry. Gaga marketed herself hungrily, and more power to her (I guess) but she represents the “acceptable try-hard mediocrity” of our Lazy Age. She’s just okay. Lena, Aretha, etc., however, were brilliant artists. Judy easily bested them all, with Aretha close. Mahalia Jackson, Sarah Vaughn, were also the closest singers to Judy in technique and truth/delivery. In this example, Horne was mechanical and focused on notes with zero feelling. Garland was superior in every way, every imagination. Apples and oranges, at best.

Judy or Shirley. Shirley sang it well. But Judy you felt loved the lyrics of the song. (She most likely did in real life.) Judy moves you. For me it’s Judy

My go to version of this famous aria isn't included. Victoria de los Angeles applies perfection to this piece. 'Greatest opera divas' is so subjective and gives an indication of the poster's preferences. I've listened to all the above but will go back to the wonderful Victoria.

Both are great versions, however as a very new convert to everything Judy, I adore Judy's version of this song.

They are all amazing miracles of the belle canto but we all have our favorites. For me Monserrat, Caballe, Renee Fleming and Maria Callas who was singing for the last time and still was still impressive.

I believe we should not for granted the age difference between them. Celine is about 30 years old and Shirley 45. Also its important to mention that Celine is a clissically trained soprano and Shirley is one of the last self tought divas(Shirley Bassey tho had vocal lessons at age 49 because she lost her voice following the death of her youngest daughter). In my opinion their voices are complitelly different and can not be compared.
