Ben’s Got Wood
Великобритания
Добавлен 27 окт 2021
My name is Ben and I make woodturning and resin project videos.
I've not been doing it for very long so a lot of what I do is trial and error (a lot of error) but I'm having fun doing it anyway.
I hope you find something that you enjoy watching. If you do, please subscribe to the channel as this gives me a real push to create more videos for you to watch.
If you would like to support the channel you can 'buy me a coffee' using the ☕ Ko-Fi link below, although in reality I will use the money to reinvest into the channel by either buying new equipment or materials.
I will also be selling some of my better pieces on Etsy - go check them out! www.etsy.com/uk/shop/BGWCraftworks#items
Thank you, your support means the world to me.

From Firewood Mould to Beautiful Calabash Bowl
From Firewood Mould to Beautiful Calabash Bowl
In this video I take a grimy, mouldy piece of firewood and turn it into something special - a Calabash Bowl. Wood turning a Calabash bowl seemed odd at the time because it had no foot, but when it was finished I truly loved the look.
A Calabash bowl is a traditional bowl made from a hardened shell of a Calabash fruit. Whilst I am using Horse Chestnut here, the shape is similar as it has a full rounded aesthetic and has no base or foot.

@@ArtisticEndeavors thank you very much ☺️
Have you given up on turning and or videos?
Hi Tony. I’ve been away for a while on holiday. Got back last week and swamped with work but hopefully be back to it very soon! Hope you are well mate. 👍🏻
That's very cool, Ben.
Thank you - had no idea how it would turn out as I’d not done anything like it before. Was fun though.
How many different attachments have you purchased since your initial lathe? Have you added chisels clamps?
A few!! 😂 Mainly a new chuck, a few chisels and the ball turning jig…and a few other bits and bobs! Best way to tell is to look at the wall behind the lathe on the first video and then again in the last video! No chisel clamps though!
Ben, maybe you could do a video on how you sharpen you chisels.
Yeah good shout. Will do one when I get back from holiday 👍🏻
Amazing
Thank you very much ☺️
It's been fun to watch you grow in your skills. I'd like to try out turning myself. Hopefully I can learn something from your mistakes. :)
Hi Scott. Thanks for the comment. It’s been fun to learn - I’d definitely recommend it. Hahaa - there’s enough of my mistakes in the videos to learn from so I’m glad you and others can make good use of them 😂. Thanks again 👍🏻
Well done
Thank you very much 🙏
Very pretty, looks alot like pine
Thanks for the nice comment 🙏. I’m not 100% certain as it was a pile of wood I was given for the log burner, but I believe it is Horse Chestnut. I still have a load left and can’t bring myself to burn it ☺️
Quite an interesting shape, would love to see an actual calabash next to it for comparison.
From my research online they are a lot more rounded at the bottom - if you imagine half a coconut shell, but bigger, you wouldn’t be far off. I was tempted to do that but thought it would be too unstable. I’ve seen some pictures of them being supported by sitting them on top of a circle of rope. Your comment has got me thinking of other ‘original’ types of bowl. Will see what I can find for the next project!
What lathe is that? Great work, just followed you.
Hi, thank you 🙏. It’s a Lumberjack 305 5 speed. Great little lathe - only drawback is manual speed change using belts, but only takes a minute to change.
Nice work
Thank you very much 🙏
No trapped air pockets! Very nice.
I was quite surprised too! The pressure pot helped no doubt!
Excellent work
Thank you very much 🙏
@@BensGotWood my pleasure
Well done. The calabash shape is very soothing.
Yes, I thought a lack of a foot and a sweeping curve would make it unstable, but it didn’t, and I really liked the resulting shape. Thanks for the nice comment ☺️
Well saved Ben. Stopped it from damage by hitting the floor /wall. Nice wee bowl mate 👍🏴
😂 thanks Jim! My reactions aren’t as bad I thought they were! Hope you’re keeping well mate.
@@BensGotWood doing away fine mate. Got out into my workshed yesterday & managed a bit more organising. Hoping to get in again today at some point. Almost there with final set up of it. I've rearranged it 3 times which took a bucket of time. It's a tiny wee area, ( 10 x 5 ), & that's feet not meters, & it's ram packed with kit but it's workable & suits me. If you get around to setting up a channel email, obviously not your personal one, I'll ping over some photos of it. I don't do Facebook, Instagram oe any of the others. Stay safe & keep well buddy
Sounds like you’ve been busy! A small space is sometimes better - less space to make messy, although mine does tend to get in a state sometimes. Yes, I did finally get around to creating an email address - bensgotwoodcraftworks@gmail.com - will look forward to seeing your workshop Jim.
@@BensGotWood I've saved your email Ben. Now we'll be able to chat more without it being there for the world to see you 👍🏴
@Mr_Cleaning_Stuff cheers buddy. Getting done & doing what I can when I can. Can't wait till it's finally sorted & tidied, then I'll be fully up & running 👍🏴
Go watch Richard Raffan,in the mean time ,raise the tool rest just above center and angle the tool to 45 degrees, and push with your right hand, don’t pull with your left.just a suggestion…..good luck.
Thanks Colin - I appreciate the advice 👍🏻
Nice catch although I did chuckle a bit when I saw it fly off. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Tony - I got lucky that time! 😂
Well done. The bowl may have held on the Cole jaws better if you expanded the buttons inside the bowl. The rim is slightly closed so the jaws would have had more ability inside. No matter, you got through it and completed a very nice bowl. BTW, nice catch.
Thanks Doug. Yeah, I realised afterwards I had it the wrong way round for the shape of the bowl. Thanks for the comment and the advice 👍🏻
Ben, where did you get the tool to turn a sphere. Thanks
Hiya. It was a chap on eBay (UK) selling them. If t out search ‘Easy Pro Woodturning Lathe Turning Ball Tool’. You should find it. 👍🏻
Very nice! Best of all no trapped air pockets!
Very creative.
Thank you - if I’m honest I didn’t know what it was going to be when I cast the resin. I was thinking of making a pen pot but decided to try the sphere jig for the first time! Learned some lessons along the way.
Nicely done!
Thanks for the nice comment 👍🏻
Love the simplicity of the base. I was worried about air getting trapped in the shells, but looks like the pressure pot took care of that well. Nice job!
Thanks Doug. Yes, I didn’t want to distract from the sphere so kept the base quite simple. The pressure pot was definitely helped get rid of the air pockets. Thanks for the kind words - it means a lot.
Nice looking piece Ben 👍🏴
Cheers Jim. I’m quite enjoying playing around with resin. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods 👍🏻
Looks awesome!!
Thank you very much indeed 🙏
Brilliant! Good to see you kept going with higher and higher grits. Too many people stop too early, and their work shows it
I actually enjoy the sanding part - I find it quite relaxing! Thanks for the nice comments.
Nicely done, I had my 1st try of wood turning last month, with a lot of help from my tutor we made a Pear!!
Oh nice. It is a fun hobby. I haven’t tried fruit yet - was it difficult?
Beautiful work Ben, was it raining outside? lol
Hahaa, with all this nice weather we’re having I was missing the sound of rain ☔️😂
@@BensGotWood Haha

Nice bowl mate. I have one of these little lathes its a great piece of kit for not alot of money.
Thank you very much. Yes it’s a good little lathe. If it had electronic adjustable speed it would be perfect I reckon!
Lovely chip 'n dip bowl Ben, There's always a risk of cracking from the pith in this type of blank BTW do you watch any of the lives on here, I can recommend them as you can ask questions in the chats. Doug does them as does Paul Finlay, Wayne the wood turner, Terry at Heckington Arts and several others.
Thanks Bryan. I don’t really watch them to be honest - two young kids and a full time job means I don’t get to watch too much unfortunately 😟. Will definitely try to catch some though as I think they would be a great source on information. 👍🏻
Very nice. I like the minimal use of resin for just a hint of color with this one. Well done.
@@DougMilleratWoodSpunRound thanks Doug, much appreciated 👍🏻
Nice.
Thanks Tony
Good job! a little tip: don't use the chisel like this to remove the tenon. I made the same mistake and I stuck it on my finger. Use a vise.
Sound advice - thank you 🙏
@@BensGotWood yes it is 😁 you're welcome!
👍🏻
Smashing Video thank you😊
Thank you so much - that’s made my day ☺️
Hey Ben, not a fail just an unintended design change in your learning curve. A decent job & your next one will be better. A wee tip mate, I bought a 10" bandsaw from aldi. Really good price & a decent machine for what you & I need. Keep your eyes peeled for when they come up in their special buys as they go quick. Lidl do a very similar machine so, eyes open there again mate. 👍🏴
Hey mate, how are you? Yeah definitely agree on the need for a bandsaw, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for sure. And yeah, definitely a learning curve. Have you been watching the Scots at the Euros?
@@BensGotWood sure have buddy. Not showing theirselves up to their best I must say. And I personally don't think that they'll qualify for the next round. I reckon England ain't doing their best either 👍🏴
Yeah, we’re both playing like we’re frightened of attacking the opposition. Let’s hope for a better last group game for both teams. You never know mate! ⚽️
Live in hope mate, live in hope. I'm actually your side of the border just now for the next week. In Berwick at my Mrs's brothers caravan. Weather's stunning 😍
Very nice Jim mate. Lovely part of the country. Yes, it lovely today, for a few nice days ahead too I think. Cheeky 🍺 in the sun I think!
Ill get the hang of it sometime
Yeah me too hopefully 🤞🏻
Perhaps a different kind of barked wood...like Beech? Beech bark tends to stay adhered to the wood a lot more firmly than rougher barks. Sycamore is another.
Good to know - thanks for the tips 👍🏻
Might be a bit easier to see if you used a round soapstone on your compass....or heck, even a sharpie marker since is just a rough guesstimate anyhow.
👍🏻
Glad it's not just me who can't the bloody cap of those bottles of sanding sealer.
I know! I always have a pair of grips to hand 😂
I wouldn't trash it. Try with either a "thicker" from base to rim piece of wood or one the is more uniform and or coplanar in dimension and perhaps not so "oblong" with the shape so two of the edges won't vanish while turning. It's the truth of learning from error and not from success. I enjoyed the video. Thanks from sharing
Hi Tony. Thanks for the advice. I did take it out the bin this afternoon and attempted to give it another chance. I did manage to get the wings a bit better and then had a huge catch which broke a wing off. Hey ho! Definitely in the bin for good now! Thanks for the support as always 👍🏻
hi buddy brill video just got myself a lathe so watching you very closely how to do things thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍
Get ready to be addicted! Thanks for the positive comments. It’s a lot of trial and error for me to be honest but it’s a good way to learn! Good luck with your journey too, hope you share some results with us. 👍🏻
Great little bowl. I like the Finnish you applied
Thanks Paul. It’s good stuff!
Hey Ben, that's a nice capsule you made.
Thank you - I appreciate the support. The only thing I’d change is making a tighter fit, but it’s the first one I’ve done so all a good learning experience.
Well done.
Thanks Doug 👍🏻
Nice bowl.. I love turning oak , it has to be my favorite wood. I also have the same lathe lumberjack wl305. Good luck with the channel.
Thank you. Yes, the grain pattern is incredible. It’s a great little lathe - if it had variable speed without adjusting a belt it would be perfect! Thank you - I appreciate your support and hope you enjoy the videos as much as I enjoy making them ☺️
A really nice shallow bowl Ben, I like the large foot. Very enjoyable video to watch. You may find if you lock the tailstock quill you'll get better support when turning between centres and it may have been the cause of difficulty getting rid if end grain tearout on the face,
Hi Bryan. Hope the weather over there is better than here! Thanks for the tip - I don’t tend to lock that off, I didn’t really know the benefits, but I will certainly do that from now on. Thank you 🙏
While turning that piece I was thinking of it's possible uses and the idea of fruit came to mind and then the image at the end confirmed it. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Tony. Great minds think alike - and so do ours 😉🫣
Hi Ben, Just like you I have just got into wood turning, and I have learnt a lot from watching your videos, well mate keep up the good work.
Thank you. How are you getting on with your woodturning?
