IN DEPTH: EGKK GATWICK | MSFS2020 & VatSim | Real Airbus Pilot | Tips & Tricks | A320 Sim
Hello everyone,
Something a little different today.
I recently have started flying on VatSim for most of my home cockpit sim flights. The level of immersion when having other aircraft and real human ATC is unparalleled.
I decided to make this video for a number of reasons. I know a lot of people strive to get their sim experience “As Real As it Gets” and I thought this little in depth look at daily ops/tricks and tips would benefit people in their quests. Call it a little bit of a briefing for Gatwick Airport.
Gatwick is regularly almost fully staffed on the VatSim Network and always seems to have a good number of people flying in and out. For that reason I thought it may be beneficial to cov...

    About the constraints on the SID's when there is no controller online and you decide to ignore the alt cstr and continue climbing and then ATC comes on most of them yelling at you that you was supposed to maintain the altitude given by the SID ... i did it once now i follow the cstr strictly ... nevertheless atc nearly always let you "climb now"^^

    • @My320Sim
      @My320Sim 13 часов назад

      @@VonycBln if the ATC isn’t online though it is just uncontrolled airspace which would just be class G. I get they might get funny but they weren’t there to control you. So as long as you are monitoring something like a VatSim map I see no issue. IRL I can count on probably 1 hand how many times I have fully followed a SID from LGW

      @@VonycBln I guess it can be a risk. Personally I rarely continue the SID on MSFS if there are no controllers online because to me it’s uncontrolled airspace, once handed from tower to Unicom I will do my own thing, ie climb to cruise unrestricted and take a shortcut if possible, being aware of other passing traffic to not cause issues. If ATC then choose to come online I will just advise them what I am doing. I find VatSim takes itself way too seriously. More seriously than real life, which sadly ruins the experience at times. Don’t let the flight simulator ATC bully you out of flying the aircraft when you’re perfectly right to fly where and how you like in uncontrolled airspace! Remember that you are the pilot flying the aircraft and ATC is there to help you. Ultimately it is up to you what and where you fly ;) if they want something different when they log on, they should advise you after you tell them your current intentions. In the case of the LAM6M SID shortcut I would advise ATC when they log on, on initial contact “XYZ climbing FL120 direct BPK” and let them issue you a different clearance if needed. I hope this helps, wishing you blue skies and happy landings! Cheers, Sam

    Thanks for the insightful video! 😊 Do you know whether LGW approach speeds and configuration differ much from other airports? And you demonstrated the downwind-base-final circuit style of approach, are the speeds and configurations (flaps down X NM from THR, etc) much different for a straight-in approach? But maybe this is a good topic for another video ;)

    • @My320Sim
      @My320Sim 2 дня назад

      @@mr.airspace hi! Thanks for the comment. For the LGW speeds etc, it varies I guess with what aircraft you are flying but director will generally get you back to 220 knots and then 180 until established on final, at which point it’s 160 to 4. I see in the Airfield AOI that it says speed between 180-160 knots. There was a NOTAM enforced late last year though requiring 160 knots by 7DME and maintained til 4. I can’t vouch if this is still current - not yet at least. Gatwick does vary a bit from other places. The AOIs for some airports demand speed management and the ATC will just expect it, places like Barcelona or Amsterdam for example, but other airports like Pisa or other smaller places, they don’t tend to have published speed management so it comes down to pilot preference. You may find going into these places that one crew may wish to do an ILS at 160 to 4 or they may wish to do 180 to 6, or just fly it fully speed managed on the Airbus and decelerate with it. I personally prefer 160 to 4 but it’s not something you can always do. For Gatwick though and especially in the Airbus 319/320 you would be looking to fly clean at the 220, then decelerate to 180 taking flaps 1, if your S speed is just above 180 then you can select 180 and fly just under S speed but if managed in terms of speed it won’t go below S speed. Anyway, I digress. Then they keep you 180 to turn final, so to plan ahead you take flap 2 when the Glideslope indicator is 1 dot above, then take 160 when told. For straight in, I have only had it once or twice but they say to keep high speed, so we ended up doing 250 knots down to an established base leg to like 3000’, speed brakes out and it still wasn’t enough, so we dropped the speed off and got to flaps 2, took the gear and it was all good all before even turning localiser, sometimes they will push it when they try to give you a quicker arrival, but it’s key to remember that if it isn’t something you feel is going well then fly the plane first and relay it to ATC. After all we are the ones flying it and not them! That said it’s always been a well run and efficient experience into LGW and the same can be said on VatSim, they do a great job of controlling it and it’s very close to reality!

In all honesty I cannot recommend the unit from CP Flight, the push-pull functions aren’t like the real thing and the unit itself relies on the CP Flight driver. The driver works for the FBW A32NX but with a lot of limitations, eg the chrono button will crash FSUIPC, the Master Warning lights have the issues mentioned in the video. The company said a few months ago that they now support the Fenix Airbus with it too. It doesn’t work at all with that aircraft, I uploaded a video with the issues on my channel for them to address and a month ago they said they would look into it after their holidays. Nothing has happened yet though so their support isn’t good either. I saw on Facebook other people with the same issues. I’m looking forward to the WinWing units. I plan to replace the whole glareshield with them as they work out of the box. Plus, the WinWing stuff has mobiflight support, which (for me) means that it will work with the panels I have built, not requiring another software to run. I had an FCU and glareshield setup from years ago, and I also got the throttle and flaps/spoiler unit from eBay but they are FlightSimPM units which are pre-made. The RMP is OpenCockpits too which is pre-made. As of course is the joystick and rudder pedals. The MCDU is from A320FCU, a 3D printed unit which has an arduino and interfaces with Mobiflight. Aside from that it’s all built from wood and patience. So probably at the moment about 75-80% DIY. The whole overhead was built from scratch, as was the main instrument panel. Cost wise I don’t think it was too bad as finances are a little tight at the moment, it’s probably cost a few hundred across the 4 months to get the materials to build, switches and wire, arduinos etc. but that few hundred doesn’t factor the cost of the throttle, RMP or FCU but really I don’t feel they count as I had them a long time prior to building the thing. It has a HDMI connection and a micro USB connection for power. It’s a good little screen to be honest and yes as you say, the DCDU can pop out and be dragged over to it. Works a charm. As for the PFD ND idea, I thought the same but as you say, one side would be wrong. The only work around is to have separate PFD and ND screens, meaning 4 screens with two HDMI splitters, gets complex then because I don’t know where you can get the right size screens for PFDs and NDs

      @@ramjeansakeel8242 Hi, sadly no wiring diagrams but I used 3 of the Elegoo Arduino Mega 2560 R3 cards, and which has something like 56pins, so I wired 56 switches together with a common negative and then wired each switch/LED positive to a pin on the card, once all 56 were done, it was the same process for the next 56 switches to the second card and so on. So far I have used about 2.5 of the arduino cards, each LED was bought with a pre wired resistor for 12v which means the current draw, even when all are illuminated, doesn’t overload the board, yet they are all bright enough still when lit. Beyond that though it was just simply soldering wires onto the positives and soldering the negatives together, then just assigning in Mobiflight :)

    Nice! Is single engine taxi out a Gatwick thing or company procedure of the airline youre flying virtual?

    • @My320Sim
      @My320Sim Месяц назад

      @@maxi962 Hi thank you, yes One Engine Taxi Departure is a very encouraged procedure across both the real airlines and in vEZY virtual airline. It isn’t just for Gatwick either, it can be applied across all airports if the conditions permit. It has large fuel and emissions savings, so although per aircraft (A320) I think it is only something like 40KG of fuel it saves on average, when you times that by the number of aircraft in the company, running multiple flights a day, it adds up to large numbers, which in turn saves a lot of money and of course CO2. That said, there are rules about using it. For example, if the airport is in Low Vis Operations or if there is standing water or heavy rain, or if the aircraft has defects which may affect a OETD, you aren’t supposed to do it, also if it is a training flight the odds are it won’t happen. It is only encouraged when conditions permit and usually an item discussed in the departure brief. The crews also have to bare in mind that the engines need 3 mins of idle power to warm up between engine start (Generator coming online) and takeoff power being applied, so the second engine start is something dynamically applied. For instance, if you depart from the south side of Gatwick’s Pier 6 for RW26L then it’s not a great idea to do a OETD because with the short taxi it’s already a high workload and you have little time to do everything on top of the engine start, but if you are at the very north of Pier 5 then single engine taxi is almost always doable. For 08R too a single engine taxi is a good idea if conditions permit as it’s a long way from any of the gates. It is something I have read in the vEZY manuals as permitted, in fact the virtual airline give you extra points if you do it. For reality I cannot digress too much but for Gatwick and my company, a single engine taxi is generally normal operations (conditions permitting) but it is also something we can apply elsewhere such as Amsterdam when they use 36L for departures There is also one engine taxi arrivals which are normal procedure too, again vEZY give extra points for doing this. In reality it again depends on conditions but is encouraged. I hope this helps, sorry it’s such a long answer :)
