Having failed to achieve their goals, the Soviet command begins the painstaking process of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan. Meanwhile, a detachment of Soviet infantry was destroyed by a group of mujahideen, after which the unexpectedly appearing Soviet paratroopers accepted the fight and eliminated the enemy. The unit of airborne troops is commanded by the experienced Major Bandura, who soon faces another series of tests when Senior Lieutenant Steklov, the son of an influential Soviet official, enters his service. Believing that Steklov has specially arrived to "take part" in the fighting and receive undeserved awards, Bandura is forced to take him under his wing.
