Building (and flying?) a Searey seaplane.
2024 Ep 12 - Spirit of Mackenzie seaplane - pitch patching and taxing taxiing
The end is in sight! Ten years in, the build of my experimental seaplane, Spirit of Mackenzie, is coming down to the short strokes. Very nice! Thanks for sharing
You're dreaming your schedule. You have some problems with your avionics planning. Radio: 1. the Searey is VERY (acoustically) noisy. You need a proper intercom/audio mixer. The Flightcom is ok as a radio but really isn't a proper audio mixer with adjustable intercom squelch. 2. You need to get that ELT antenna AWAY from the VHF antenna on top of the aircraft. It will create parasitic radiation patterns that will cause pattern dark areas. The VHF transmitter can also fry your ELT! (I've done it twice!) Check with AC43.13 !!! ELT: The antenna should be installed in a location that does not affect the VHF radio (2 m away-check your ELT installation manual) and will not be destroyed in simple accidents. I have seen flipped over Seareys. Put it nearer the rear of the airplane, like on the turtle deck, well behind the propeller arc. Your can run the coax securing through the boom tube. Transponder: I would not put the transponder antenna less than a metre from my head. That could be 250W blasting your brain cells and it is also restricting the pattern. This is all strictly line-of-site. You need to move it away from the engine and also reduce the coax feeder length. I put one on the nose hatch facing up. Also, consider what you will need to "upgrade" to FAA ADS-B. The Canadian ADS-B mandate is another matter that isn't worth discussing, but if you put the antenna on the nose hatch you have a better chance of it working in your area to the satellite network. (It won't work in a lot of other parts of Canada) Tailwheel steering. I've had my Classic Searey for 16 years and I am still not satisfied with the tailwheel steering. It is very dependent upon the tailwheel strut alignment.
Looking very good!!!
Thank you Vladimir for your kind comment. It feels good to be near the end! Onward and upward!
wow you are working your way down that list very efficiently, i too had trouble picking a w&b limit seems it has changed quite a bit over the years and different models almost everyone i talked to had different numbers, ie. aft limit anywhere from 99" to 105"
Hi Wayne, I decided to go with the 100" aft limit stated in the Pilot's Operating Handbook for the SeaRey Adventure LSA, the factory version most similar to my home-built LSX. This is staying on the safer side of the envelope, I believe.
nice to see that list getting shorter
Thanks Wayne, I am really picking up speed now after a month of unplanned downtime due to illness and bad weather.
thanks for the video bob i had similar issue but was able to clean it up and it worked.
Greeting Robert from Australia, I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer too, - the aluminium air frame (the primary structure ) and associated aluminium structural components, I believe are fabricated from 6061 T3 aluminium, my question is are they anodised? or bare aluminium? all the on line images I've seen it appears to me that all the aluminium structure looks to be anodised. Cheers from DownUnder. Glenn.
Hi Glenn, to the best of my knowledge most, if not all, of the aluminum parts supplied by Progressive Aerodyne in the LSX kit are anodised. In the Technical Forum for Searey owners there are lots of statements to that effect. As PA is now out of business I ordered a replacement aluminum part from Jim at seareyspecialist.com/ and he made a point to say that as he would have to fabricate it out of aluminum stock, it would not be anodised.
@@bobgee999 Thank you for your response, yes that comment would indicate that likely the original component would have been anodised, cheers, lets hope someone picks up the ball and continues production. Not knowing the background as to why PA halted trading, makes it hard to believe that such a successful design with so many in the air (or on water) has stopped production. good luck with you continued build. Cheers Glenn.
@@bobgee999 Thank you Robert for your response, yes I would have thought given than that it is an amphibious aircraft the aluminium would be anodised. lets hope someone picks up the ball and starts kit production again, wonderful aircraft. Thanks again.
I have the Flightline FL-760 in my Searey. If your column mounted press to talk (PTT) is working, then you are transmitting when that light goes RED!!! You should not need to wire the tip on the microphone plugs. Your column mounted PTT is doing this function. Mine are not wired. Make sure your audio common lines are not connected to the airframe at more than one point. Do you have a separate intercom or are you using the intercom feature of the FL-760? Is your intercom function working now? If you are getting mic. audio to the radio you should be hearing some audio when you transmit into your headset. This is called "sidetone" and is a transmit audio sample taken from inside the radio. The sidetone level is set within the radio. If you have the FL-760 and it needs adjustment this is a real problem. If you have the FL-760A this is a lot easier using the front panel instructions. The FL-760 doesn't have a very good intercom. Most intercoms are voice activated ("VOX") but this one needs an extra PTT line. The interconnection diagram is confusing! You need 2 separate switches for intercom and transmit. Yuk! I have a Dynon SV-2S that has a proper VOX and is suitable for the noisy cockpit of the Searey. I hope your ELT antenna is not anywhere near your VHF antenna. This is an absolute no-no per AC43.13. I've ruined 2 ELTs on my airplane. TRANSPONDER. Is that the Garmin GTX327? This model is not ADS-B compatible. I wouldn't put the transponder antenna above anyone's head like you have. This is 250W 2ft from your head. I put my antenna on the nose hatch. Shorter wiring and lower antenna coax loss.
Hi Lee, thanks for all those tips. I will work through them one by one as I troubleshoot my VHF.
Looking good Rob!! Hope you get her flying this summer. It would be nice to see some flight video of the Sunshine Coast.
It is going to be sweet Philip to be up in the air over the Salish Sea, the Sunshine Coast, Desolation Sound, and the 32 Lakes (I think I have finally figured out what those are). Anyway, a lot of great places to explore with a seaplane.
great video robert can’t wait for the next one!
Coming soon...
What a lot of work! I've never taken off the windscreen to troubleshoot the pitot and static lines. I had to rebuild my Rey panel in 2019 after I submarined the airplane It was submerged long enough to contaminate my entire pitot static system. I replaced most of the instruments and used coloured tubing to discriminate pitot as red, static as blue and green for AOA. Ran my pitot/AOA through the wing strut to simplify. I appreciate your attention to detail to be able to find bad connectors and elbows! I wish I had done the same. Hope you've got some drains on those lines. You seem to have 2 antennae on the wing root cover and one of them looks like an ELT antenna. I would be very concerned about this setup. For one thing, if you nose over the airplane, then the ELT is useless. But the bigger problem is that the VHF comms can affect the ELT. I've blown 2 ELTs when I moved to an airport with 121.7 Gnd frequency. This was way too close to the 121.5. Also AC43.13 also warns that the ELT antenna will negatively affect the VHF comms pattern. I moved my ELT antenna to the turtledeck with an internal ground plane. It was easy to run coax through the tail boom. Lee
Thanks for your support Lee and I appreciate your observations and comments. I have got tees on the static tubing just inside each port so that I can install drain valves or plugs. Perhaps I will install them at the low point of each pitot and AOA tube as well. For the AOA antennae installation I have been following the Searey installation manual and what I have seen other factory and home-builts. But this is not my expertise and your comments about its location makes a lot of sense. I will keep it in mind.
Yikes, I am suffering from acronym angst ... I meant the ELT not AOA antennae.
keep going robert the end is in sight! I passed my final inspection today with just a couple of very minor snags. your right behind me
Thanks Wayne for your ongoing encouragement, and congrats on obtaining the Certificate of Airworthiness for your home-built Searey. Got any photos to share?
very difficult to get paint to stick on those sponsons.
i did not i mounted it up front on the avionics tray wanted as much weight forward as possible
Bob, I’ve watched all of your videos because I purchased one of the last factory built Searey Elites. I have learned a lot about the airplane, watching your build. Just want you to know that once you finish and start flying the airplane, you will have the most fun you can have in an airplane. This is coming from a Major Airline pilot of 40 years with around 31,000 flight hours. Thanks for sharing your successes and frustrations. I know I could never do what you have accomplished. I’ve learned a lot. Remember with this airplane when you start flying it, energy management is EVERYTHING!!!!
Thanks Randy for your support and your kind comments. Energy management to keep the build going has been challenging! Knowing that people are watching, and some are even commenting, gives a real boost to the motivation to get this build done! I have very few flight hours in my log book and haven't flown in a few years now, so I will have a lots to relearn and lots more to learn for the first time, when the Spirit takes to the air. But I will keep energy management in mind. Cheers.
saw the mistake because i made the same mistake
Good to know, I feel better now. Did you mount your ELT in the same location, and with the same sort of clamp around the boom tube?
thanks for the update robert, not sure if your aware but T.C. requires even a new ELT and transponder to be performance tested by avionics shop. As mike patey would say back to work.
Hi Wayne, thanks for the heads up. I will look into the need for those performance tests and who can do them for me. I expect that I have enough time in my schedule to allow for this sort of extra task. But $? Ouch, so much for thinking that my spending days were all behind me!
great to see your back at it robert i’m ready for final inspection but wintered in here in nova scotia
That is great that you are so far along Wayne. Let's hope that we both get airborne in 2024!
Hey Rob Great to see you back!!! I have an older Searey in need of a re fit /up date and your videos have been very helpful. I have friends on the Sunshine coast I visit occasionally. If your up for it I'd love to have a look at your plane sometime and hear about your build.
Hello Philip. Thanks for your kind note and comment. Visitors are always welcome. bobgee999@yahoo.com
You get this plane flying yet?
Hi Terry... thanks for the reminder to get something accomplished. Still not in the air, but inching ever so close now. 2024 is the year!
@@bobgee999 wished I could come help you out. I know that plane well. You ever fly one?
I first went up for a short joy ride in a Searey in Sydney, Australia. That got my heart set on building my own. Then in October 2015 I flew in one down the eastern seaboard over a period of three days from Maryland to Florida. Great trip! I posted a video about it.
C'mon Bob, Don't stop now I am waiting excitedly for the Spirit of McKenzie to take to the skies, love your videos. when will the next video come out?

Hi Robert, Just want to encourage you to keep going. I am wanting to build one of these when I retire so your videos are very helpful.
Nice video.G. luck.
Thanks for the visit
My jaw hit the ground with the wing! You were AMAZINGLY reserved! I would have let out a loud Aaaaarrrrrgggghh! Sometime when you are back out to Prince Albert Sk. maybe we could get together for a coffee or something as we don't live that far away (in Saskatchewan terms!). Keep at it, I have confidence in you to get it finished!
Just got back from another quick stint in PA and hope to spend some time in the hangar this week. From -38C to +8C, quite a change! Thanks for the continuing support. Coffee sounds good, keep in touch.
"From -38C to +8C, quite a change! " Believe me, it's a change I would welcome! lol
Hello Bob, I just found your channel when searching for Homebuilt Seaplanes! I am from Saskatchewan and would love to buy and build an Aventura ll but am dismayed by the way the costs have been going up! Their basic kit has gone from ~$32,000 in 2019 to $59,500 in 2022! And that's US dollars! I'm hoping it doesn't remain an unfulfilled bucket list dream! I'll be following all the rest of your videos though and rooting you on for the completion of your dream. Thanks for posting these up. They will help to encourage the rest of us!
Hi DG, thanks for the encouragement, as every bit counts. The Searey LSX kit sticker price has also increased considerably since I purchased my big crate of parts. Likewise for all the necessary add-ons like the engine, electrics and electronics. Fortunately I have all the parts now... just got to bear down, weather and work be damned, and get the build finished!
Great wiring job and wonderful sound on the chanter.
Hi Bob Was doing a New Years clean out of emails and saw that I hadn’t looked at your videos or commented, sincere apologies. I am isolating at home with either a case of the flu or Covid but think it might be Covid as my daughter, husband, granddaughter have it and we saw the granddaughter 10 days ago hence the cleanup and time to look at the videos. Like the idea of the PM scenario, you definitely have lots of that experience. I didn’t realize that you played the pipes, we have a neighbour who plays them and have noticed a great improvement in his play so it should come back to you. Looking forward to getting on to the rest. “Biggles” has come a long way since Nelspruit. Dave
Здравствуйте, сколько стоит собраный самолёт searey?
Hello Nikolai, the basic kit from Progressive Aerodyne costs about $50,000, the rebuilt Rotax engine about $20,000, the electronics & electrical about $20,000, and then about $10,000 more for mechanical parts, adding up to about $100,000. This is Canadian dollars which is now about $80,000 American. To buy the factory assembled equivalent model costs about twice that amount. Спасибо и с новым годом
Excellent Bob; the horrendous wx we’re having and you having to work doesn’t help, but you’ll be done soon! All the best.
great save!
OMG the moment with the wing was scary.
I was holding my breath when you were removing that wing.
Yes, it would have been a really setback to have torn the fabric or bent a strut. Mega hangar rash!
possibly air leaking into carburetors check if the flange is tight , maybe need a little sealant on carburetor heater treads
Thanks Wayne, good tip. The weather in BC has been terrible the past few weeks, verging on disastrous in the last couple of days. So I haven't been able to check out the engine yet. Working on the wing gap seal and the centre console. Next video in a few days.
Should have guest you are Canadian🤣🖕
Hey Shane, indeed I am a Canuckle-head. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thank you, it has been a long road, but the end is in sight... and I can exchange the road for the airway!
That’s frustrating Bob that the idle is now so high with no explanation! I’m sure you will figure it out soon though. Thanks for the education on the carb heat installation, I will need to look into this for mine too. Great video!
Hi David... equally frustrating now is that the weather is not conducive to working on the engine in an open hangar. But I have lots of other tasks to clean up in my push to get ready for the Certificate of Airworthiness. Stay tuned...
Each project has its ups and downs, the important thing is to stay motivated and you do it wonderfully. Almost is done.🎃🎃🤣🤣
So true ERA! It has been a long haul, but the end is coming. Thanks for your support.
Congratulations Bob on your accomplishments and wonderful progress with Spirit of Mackenzie! Your demeaner, honesty and mannerisms make your videos such a pleasure to watch. I am across the Strait from you by the way, so we are practically neighbors and I've also bought a Classic Searey which I hope to have flying up here in the Qualicum Beach area by springtime. Being fairly new to the Island I also enjoy the little sidesteps in your videos about the area and of course Samantha makes a good "Doug Mackenzie"! Hope to meet you one day. Kind regards, Dave Vanderbanck
Hey it is great to hear from you David, especially as we are practically neighbours. Just a short hop across the Strait, with lots to see at both ends, and in between. Are you doing an online build log as you progress, as I am on Kitlog Pro?
@@bobgee999 No log Bob. It's a completed 2001 Searey (very low time) that I have yet to lay eyes on! It was built in the States and between having just moved back from overseas and Covid, I still have to get down to a friends hangar where she lives until I make a plan. congratulations bob another major step in your build process, i’ll be waiting patiently for your next video.
It was a great relief, Wayne, to get that engine to start, a major step indeed. Have to install carb heaters on it now to satisfy Canadian regulations. Hope it starts again afterwards.
Looks like a good place to enlist about a 18 yr old helper to get under there. Looks nice you are alot further along than me
Hi Alan. So you are building a Searey too? What stage are you at, and how is it going? I, in fact, do have an 18 year old assistant now as my youngest son has just entered an auto mechanics program and is helping me get the engine started... check out Episode 10 when it comes out.
@@bobgee999 yes mine is a basket case. I live in northern Illinois and bought it from a guy down in Florida who flipped it in the water didn't do alot of damage except for the hull. I just last month bought a b hull from a guy in new Hampshire , but really want a c hull so a made a copy of the bottom of a c hull from a friend and wand to use that to make an all new carbon fiber c hull. I am making progress but slowly.
@@alanswanson1952 I hear the C hull is definitely the way to go to ensure safe and fun water operations. What a challenge you are taking on in building your own hull. Hi Dad et al, that is my mission... teach a little, entertain a bit, and use the support like yours as motivation to get this baby into the air!
great video robert funny how some of the big jobs go rather quickly, and some of the small job end up taking an amazing amount of time.
Yes Wayne you are so correct. As on managing large industrial projects the devil is in the battery limits, i.e. where two suppliers meet and the connections, the data, the materials, the whatever, don't match up. Then you as the project engineer have to bridge the gap by figuring out what both sides need and inserting the solution. It doesn't help if you are a neophyte, as is the case for me with much of what I am doing.
Well that company not make it easy for you if the information it’s not complete or accurate 🤦🏻♀️
You are right ERA... The Rotax engine builder did not make it easy for me when they supplied the engine with a fitting not designed for North American oil fittings and hoses. They knew what type of plane I was building at the time, or could have asked me if they didn't, and should have installed the correct fitting for me. This is a good example of why building a plane by a newcomer takes so much longer than building one the second or third time around. I learned my lesson!
sent you a email not sure if you got it.
