Tip 1-give time between deciding to buy something and then actually buying it. Tip 2- no need to have summer and winter wardrobes Tip 3 - don’t keep gift boxes. Recycle them or repurpose. Tip 4 - have an expert to pack and move , declutter before moving. Tip 5 - stop saving the best things but enjoy them now. Tip 6 - use online apps to sell or buy things. Try to involve less people as possible. Tip 7 - don’t buy multiples of something Tip 8 - declutter books they can collect over 1000s in the long term Tip 9 - greeting cards can also pile up. Only keep the best and the favourites.try to keep only cards from the current year and throw away the old ones. Tip 10-decluttering when there is no place to start is more difficult. Contain things on boxes and just thin it out to begin with and put them in the right place. Tip 11 - don’t be afraid to run out of carrier bags. Tip 12 - dealing with decision fatigue. Declutter 5 items a day and work up over time or do longer hours overtime. Tip 13- make future decision now. Tip 14 - have homes for things. Tip 15 - declutter slowly but make decisive actions Tip 16 - the go basket. Put it somewhere close to your entrance. Out things in there that you need when you leave your house. Tip 17 - packing for holiday. Have a carrier bag for each day. So dirty clothes go back on the same carrier bag. Tip 18 - lay your outfit out for each day before packing. Tip 19 - don’t pack everything to avoid overpacking. Don’t try to cover all eventualities. Tip 20- hoarding is bad word. Think of it is a full home. But these people are good at letting things go and making decisions. It’s about figuring out where your sentiments lay in terms of your things. Tip 21- children’s art work - display it in a set area. Like the fridge or corner of your house. Tip 22- have the children take charge of that area so they can learn to declutter themselves. Tip 23- my little da Vinci- create frames that can hold 50 pieces of art work. Tip 24- you are your own superhero. Start by some decision making. Trust yourself to do the declutterring yourself. Tip 25- back to school organisation- look at your home and see where your kids get ready in the morning and bring the clothes in that area. tip 26 - being eco friendly - be mindful of what you bring in to your home. It’s easier to be eco friendly after having minimal things. Tip 27- let go of hand me downs, you can replace them easily if you need them. Tip 28 - bedding - write on it with market , like a cheat , which is long side and short side. Store bed sheets in pillow cases so that grabbing is easy. Tip 29 - broken items- you replace it but you still hold on to old items because of sentimental issues. Tip 30- items are gateways to memories. You can access them other ways by taking pictures. Tip 31- vacuum storage can damage fabrics Tip 32 - finding motivation to declutter. Do little jobs that you’ve been putting of. Start easy. Tip 33- when you declutter your home will build a personality. Your home needs to work for you.

Wow Heather! I found your podcast after getting Audible and listening to an E book on clutter and ADHD, and I am so glad I did. I am all the way in Perth, Australia, and I have been diagnosed with ADHD this year. Your podcast is hands down the easiest and best to listen to for me. Some of the things you mention make me laugh out loud because it sounds exactly like me. Your realistic tips and tricks have already helped me so much on my journey. Thank you!!! 💗

With respect, thr difference between hoarding and clutter isn't the amount of stuff a person has on their doming room table or in their homes. The difference is the *relationship* the person has with their stuff. With hoarding, the person experiences great distress at the thought of losing their belongings, even demonstrably useless items such as trash and unrepairable items. With clutter, or extreme clutter, the person *wants* the items gone, or downsized because the more items the more stress is generated. Extreme clutterers often suffer from executive function (decision making and executing) disorder. They struggle with keeping order in their homes, and with deciding how to manage their belongings. The saying "clutter is just delayed decisions" is absolutely applicable with these folks. My mother struggled with extreme clutter, and it is one of the reasons I became a MFCC (Marriage, Family, Child Counselor). Both hoarders (whose belongings bring them comfort, and extreme clutterers whose belongings bring them anxiety, deserve our help and support, and I commend you for providing it. But it is important to understand the difference between them, to ensure the best sustainable outcome. Hoarders do tend to respond well to medication. But don't often get treated because they don't feal there is anything wrong and so don't want or won't accept help. Extreme clutterers on the other hand, recognize the problem and are often open to help provided it doesn't add to their sense of shame and overwhelm. It must be handled with respect, sensitivity and understanding. Unfortunately people with executive function disorders (EF Disorders) are more difficult to treat with medication. Stimulants such as ritalin, focalin and other newer drugs can help make the decision making process easier for many, but not all. The treatment, which should include some form of talk therapy (to address anxiety and shame issues) needs to be individually tailored to the person, and involves a lot of trial and error. It can be a long process which can be difficult for those who struggle with follow through (such as those with EF disorder) to stick with. It can be frustrating, but for those who get the help (Rx and/or talk therapy) and implement supportive structure into their lives (checklists for house tidying, and the processing and management of their belongings), it can greatly reduce the anxiety surrounding decision making in their lives and lead to a sense of personal liberation.

Great vid with many valid points! I live in Seattle and can totally relate. If someone has so much clothes it’s impossible to do a reverse hanger technique, it might be best to first organize the clothes by function/type.. all the polos together, all the chinos together, all the tshirt and so on.. then organize each type by color.. if you start seeing you have 8 white T-shirts’, or 5 pairs of black jeans it may be beneficial to donate what you don’t wear from each category..
