Cartridge Conversion Revolvers
США
Добавлен 15 сен 2019
Fire Cartridges with your Cap & Ball revolver by simply installing a Kirst Cartridge Konverter. A Kirst Konverter allows you to shoot centerfire cartridges loaded with either Smokeless or Black Powder at target velocities, which are less than 1,000 feet per second. You can convert your percussion revolver to a centerfire cartridge revolver and then back again to a percussion revolver, just by switching from the Cap & Ball cylinder to a Kirst Konverter. This video is a review of the Dance Brothers revolver that was made in Texas back in 1862, for the Confederacy, during the Civil War. This Pietta reproduction of the unique Dance Brothers revolver has been converted to fire 45 Colt and 45 Schofield cartridges (Black Powder or Smokeless) with a Kirst Cartridge Konverter. Kirst Konverter is currently the only company offering a cartridge conversi...
I'd like to buy one but I'm not paying four hundred dollars for it that's a Rip-off...
Can't see the money in them why do they cost so much.
Lower the cost on them then I might buy one.
Can't see the money in them.
For what those things cost you shouldn't haft to do anything with them I use a plastic tie to hold the spring down.
Why do they cost so much money.
I used >> Dremel 1/8 in. X 1-1/2 in. L Tungsten Carbide Cutter. It was fast but have to be careful because they break easy, then I used that sanding drum.
Do this and the gun loses its replica status.
but gains utilitarianism. multipurpose tool.

thank you very much
thank you youmuch
that's a howell Conversion, not a kirst. Kirst by your advertising: is a revolver that replaces percussion, but don't have a rod to take out the empty brass. Howell Conversion: A cylinder you have to dissemble, and add a new loaded cylinder.
Great video Bill my friend
Over priced rubbish.
Bill I'm starting to think these Italian revolvers are pure junk ,great video tho
Exactly what I needed, thank you.
As a power tool repair technician, I disassemble and reassemble more complex mechanisms than this on a daily basis, but it's remarkable what a reputation for complexity and difficulty of reassembly single action revolver designs from more than a century and a half ago have developed. Double action are a bit more complex than this, with all the extra "just so" linkage that lets the trigger pull the hammer and advance the cylinder. Still, revolvers and semi-auto rifles and handguns aren't as complicated as, say, a sewing machine or camera shutter. Take pictures or video as you disassemble, and make sure the part you're working with is visible in the images, and you'll have the information you need to put everything back the way you found it.
Once you do the conversion, can you swap out and still install and use the original cylinder?
You can with a 1851 Navy Colt. It just makes capping easier with the modified recoil shield. It should work on a Dragoon or Walker.
'Bout ready to convert a dragoon, so thank you for this info. I have done a few 51's and 60's. But I heard Walkers and dragoons have some unique issues. Thanks again.
nice video, you have done a few of my revolvers for me, I can say if I'm not able to do it myself you are the only one allowed to touch my revolvers. anyone reading this "Kirst" did a great job!!!
I remember saving up to buy my 1858 Piata that I bought for $100 a Kirst converter in 45 Colt with the gate. I did my research and decided that this company made a better product of the few companies out there doing this so after biting the bullet to say I spent the extravagant $500 for the cylinder which already was a huge purchase for me especially for what you get in return. Well unfortunately whoever this company had processing their transactions immediately stole my debit information and spent every penny I had which happened to be about $5,500. After fighting with I believe it was US Bank who I had a checking account with that the time for 9 months they refused to reimburse me for the stolen property despite the fact I lived in Seattle and the purchases were made in Florida. I threw that pistol and that cylinder in the drawer it's been 5 years and to this day every time I pick up that pistol I want to smash it into the ground
That sucks but I'd blame US Bank
I remember when I got my 45 Long Colt curse converter for my 1858 Piata. I was very excited did all my research And went with the Gated conversion kit from Kirst because in my opinion it was the better of the two options of companies selling conversion kits even though there was what I felt extravagant price attached to it for what it was. So after biting the bullet per se and spending the $500 on a cylinder for a $100 pistol whoever these guys had processing their credit cards immediately stole my debit information and spent every penny I had which happened to be about $5,500. The company refused to reimburse my money even though I lived in Seattle and the charges were made on the East Coast. It ruined my life and I never expected to pay $6,000 for something so insignificant I set the pistol in a drawer and haven't touched it since I got it years ago it just smells bad every time I pick it up
Use a prepaid card if you have any doubts
Bill, thank you for the installation Vid with all the tricks for my Dragoon install. Timing is excellent and the revolver is working great. Thanks Again.
Did this to my 1860 Army snubbie. Works and looks great. Just take your time.
Gosh darn it. If I knew these existed I would’ve have bought the Taylor and co that pops out instead of a loading gate.
If a gunsmith messes with just the pietta BP revolver. It still won’t count as a fire arm correct? It’s not until you put in the conversion cylinder and it takes modern ammo?
I watched with interest your Walker trouble shooting video in the end you discussed the problem of inability to rotate the cylinder on half cocking and I was able to fix my conversion. Great job! Thank you
Sweet you could be working on my 1858 Remington.38 now. Thanks for all you do 👍
Thanks for this great video!
Thank you Kirst for making this video!
Thanks for the video. I have taken a number of Colt type single actions apart but one thing I haven't done was to move the mainspring like you did. That's a neat trick thanks for the tip. And, yes, I too have put the trigger/bolt spring in wrong by not correctly getting it on the trigger properly (rats).
You could also just buy an 1873 SAA clone. It would be much cheaper and much more accurate. Then you could save cap and ball for the incoming zombie apocalypse.
🥱

We like to make things, especially something that will be a work of art when completed. The 1860 Colt has very sleek lines and a balance that is nice.
Like the others in the series, great detail and instruction in this video
Just curious if someone cal help me understand. I got a .44 caliber black powder Colt navy revolver. And was wondering if one of these konversion kits works on it or not. Does the kit need to also be .44 caliber? Or does the barrel length and diameter make no difference if I put on say a .38 special cylinder?
They work fine. The frame cutting for loading ammo into the cylinder is better left to the professional unless you have machinist skills (I don't). This gunsmith has done a couple of them for me. The .44 caliber black powder revolvers are actually .454 so .45 ammo works just fine. I prefer to use cast lead bullets in ALL of my BP conversions as well as model pistols. They are cheaper (I reload) and put less wear on the barrel. Don't worry about leading if they bullets are properly lubed. The presenter of this video has an Uberti .44 Colt Model 1860 that I bought the .45 ACP Konversion cylinder for.
If your revolver is a .36 caliber Navy type, the actual bore diameter is .375 so it is best to use hollow base wadcutter bullets. They will expand to "catch" the rifling in the barrel and improve accuracy. If you don't reload, there are companies that make Cowboy action ammo for this. Barrel length doesn't matter.
Yes, you will need the .44 cal Konverter Assembly. The .44cal barrel is too large for the .38sp cylinder. If you've got a .44cal then you cannot shoot .38sp. You will need a .36cal Colt Navy for that.
Excellent!
Good video Bill !
Conical burr tool might get down on them metal better than sanding it all away.
There are many ways to accomplish this task.
Informative and easily followed instructions.
Can the percussion cylinder be replaced and used in this conversion? If this conversion is done to a revolver which is cut for a shoulder stock and you have the shoulder stock along with a solely percussion revolver, are there any legal problems to contend with, such as "Constructive Possession", requiring the NFA tax stamp/registration of the converted revolver, just so they can be in proximity to each other?
No sane man trusts the ATF to be reasonable or keep to their word any more.
Yes, you can switch back and forth between conversion and percussion. You "MUST NOT" use a shoulder stock with a converted percussion revolver. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DO THIS.
When you put a conversion cylinder in a cap and ball it is considered building a firearm. So yes it would require a tax stamp if you would want to put a stock on it.
I followed the instructions something went wrong not sure what, now the cylinder free spins and won't lock, only reason I bought this model pistol is for the kirst converter no other company makes one for this model I now have a 700.00 paperweight I should have stuck with a model that Howells make conversions for like my other three, I guess that's what I get for buying something you have to sand and file to fit
Mine fails to rotate far enough to lock up. I need to either thumb cock it fast or rotate the last 1/8th inch by hand before shooting. Did the hand spring break on yours? A common thing if the spring is tightened too tight. Mine liked 1/2 way down with the screw. Mine too is a $800 paper weight.
Whenever the cylinder free spins, the bolt isn't rising into the notch. Usually caused by a broken bolt spring (common failure point for single actions). The fix is a new bolt spring. The common cause for short rotation of cartridge cylinders is the necessary angle of the ratchet grooves. Doesn't always happen, but often enough to be a known issue. The fix is a two-step hand.
Excellent tutorial. Thank you for uploading this. I have a new Pietta 1860 on its way to me and will be ordering a Konverter soon. Your instruction is most welcome for my fitting it.
Will this modification effect the cap and ball cylinder if you decide to convert back to that?
No. You can easily switch between cartridge and cap & ball by merely changing the percussion cylinder for the konverter and returning to the percussion.
No it will still work probably even better because you can get the caps on easier and the clear easier because the port is larger
You should really keep your thumb away from that blue button if you like being able to unscrew the chuck on your Dremel. You keep hitting it while the spindel's under load and I keep hearing the chuck pin grinding away.
Hello Bill how's ole Walt doing. How you doing good I hope. I'm be getting the 22 outfit. Soon I hope. Also have Colt replica both piette. I like get 38 kon. For colt. 22 for both. Take income tax though won't be long now. I have a question do you know what size dovetail fits the piette front sight on newer models. The reason I'm asking (lot people probably won't like this) is that with 45 acp kirst konverter like have fiber optic front sight . Have one for 10/22 but dovetail is way bigger. Thank you love the video's there great learning videos . Keep up great work Sir. Stay safe from ur ole hillbilly buddy.

Glad you are very happy with your Konverter. I am doing well, Thank you. Walt.

Roughly speaking, how much time does the "machining" take to accomplish?
It takes as long as you take because it depends on how you do it. There are various methods to achieve this result.
Can a person send you there revolver for this conversation?
Excellent, clear instructions. Reassuring, simple to follow.
