As someone who has used GameMaker for at least 15 years now. I *get* where a lot of the problems in Undertale's code comes from... I would say: Gamemaker makes the 'fun action' bits of making a game really easy! Making a lil guy run and jump around on screen collecting coins and avoiding spikes, can easily be made by someone new to the software in an afternoon. There are so many built in functions/variables, from Speed, Gravity, a following camera, collision detection, exc! - You don't have to use them of course, but they are there. But those 'boring technical' bits like... Dialogue systems, Menus, GUI elements, A pause system... Yeah make it all yourself. Want to have that typewriter effect with your textbox? There is no built in function, you gotta make one. (or find someone else's work like Juju Adam's Scribble, and import that) Want to create a database for your dialogue? And wish you could have an easy UI so a non coder member of the team can easily add lines of dialogue, and properties to that dialogue (sound effects used, portraits, font exc exc) - Make the Database yourself and the tools they will use. - I am 100% sure this is why all the dialogue was in a massive switch statement. If Gamemaker had a Database tool like... TES5Edit/FO4Edit. Something more visual. I am sure Undertale would have ended up using that.

I don’t think most have ever played the game. They just liked the art style and legendary soundtrack.

For a game so poorly coded it’s surprisingly polished, I never ran into any major bugs or had even a single crash

I suppose complaining about a video game's code is a bit like complaining about a book's binding. If you know anything about book binding you might be horrified at the way an amateur has stapled it together, but for the reader, so long as the pages are all intact and it's comfortably readable, it doesn't matter in the slightest. Bad code is only bad code if it actually badly impacts the gameplay.

Quick note: I don't know how it is in other countries, but where I live income tax is already included in the salary. So maybe 5 cents/hour salary is so small because of the big taxes?

Consider: the town is just self sufficient, theres us, the farmer, marie's ranch, we literally have a local wizard, and that wage estimate, is just joja, they are literally the bad company, it could very well be that stardew valley has no minimum salary and joja just gets away with it, as otherwise, all villagers would be dead.

My view of this innocent town has been irreparably tarnished. I hate that I watched this.

The inflexible labor market is a myth. 100% employment is good for wages and workers but not for business who have to compete for workers instead of workers competing for jobs. The "inflexiblity" doesn't make it harder for workers to find a job, by definition the number of jobs would be greater than or equal to the number of workers, unlike now where the number of jobs is less than the number of workers. Currently some people are forced into destitution, whereas 100% employment would put those unemployed people into jobs that they *might* find suboptimal.
