What killed two of my last three projects was a concept i hadn't even heard of, "technical debt". Where bad decisions early in the project had a compounding effect until it was no longer possible to go forward. But i learned from each sink- hole and I'm almost done with my first project since childhood. (Which was coded in Commador Basic on a C64)😅

This makes sense realistically but in the game it’s just a borderline utopia where you can live a quiet life. People wouldn’t be so keen to relax and start a family with you if it was mid-war and economic turmoil

Honestly, it’s for the best that the game didn’t delete itself. If that was the case, it’d make you need to rebuy it. In a game where you need to replay it to truly experience it, making you lose the game would not work well. Undertale’s held together by duct tape, love, and DETERMINATION, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I understand that this video is taking some of the economics literally, but my headcanon is that you, the player, come to this economically depressed town with no basic industry other than tourism and maybe Marnie's ranch (it depends on how much of her sales are local versus external), living off of inertia of prior decades like when your grandfather lived there, but you the player then become that missing basic industry with your farm, exporting tons of goods via Lewis's connections elsewhere. Lewis includes taxes in how much he pays you, and between that and your own purchasing power and generosity, you begin to turn around the local economy and its non-basic industries flourish. Thankfully everyone owns their own homes and businesses and there are no landlords, so it doesn't take much cash to fix things, especially once JojaMart stops extracting cash from the economy. The wonky price differences are not about the actual prices in the economy but because ConcernedApe sets some prices for gameplay reasons, some for lore, and some for comedy. I think the 5g an hour was for comedy and doesn't reflect what the actual wage would be. Speaking of which, I always wished you could hire villagers on your farm like the junimos. Like once you oust JojaMart, Shane needs employment.

I can't stop making my dream game. Getting to keep chipping away at it has been too much fun. Besides I'm already too many years in at this point lol

My Tip that's only work for me : if you want to make a game like a challenging arcade game. Try to learn how the mechanics works. Don't draw a marvallous pixel art at the start of your game because it'll take a lot of effort and time (can also destory your determination) while you're still learning how the game work.

Hi I'm 6 months late, can I use that time idea, it's cool. I spent like 2 hours making a really detailed stopwatch for the opening cutscene of my game and I have no idea what it has to do with the story or gameplay lmao

i don't think i fully understand your take on the dialog function. if it's just a switch statement mapping integer (i.e. 'dialog id' or sth like that) to global state (global.msg[]) than that seems... fine? it really shouldn't affect the performance in any noticeable way. don't quote me on that but it's quite possible the compiler inlines the dialogs either way

Linus doesn't seem to be looking for a job though, so it may not be appropriate to consider him as being a member of the labor force. Thus Stardew may in fact have a 0% unemployment rate and near full labor force participation (aside from those lazy kids)

This video reminds me when I first started learning game dev: I wrote horrible and unreadable code I didn't optimize anything I made I didn't go in with a plan of any kind However, I slowly learned the process with micro games and re-created some of my favorite flash games as a challenge to learn new processes. Now, I'm ready and actively making the game of my own dreams. (Which may or may not suck, who knows) But I am putting it out there when it's done purely for the sake of saying "I did it, the game nobody has thought of making is now out there." A tip from me if you want to learn the process of game development: If your going at it alone, your going to have to wear many hats through-out the process. Your going to have to be the programmer, the artist, the musician, the story-writer, the marketer, and whatever else your games may need. It's a tedious process to having to learn to basically be a one-person game studio, and it may be that you just can't do certain tasks on your own. Whatever the situation may be, just know that there is *some* way forward if you look hard enough.

I always come to the comments to argue for dream gamers but then I remember that I spent around 3 months (on top of a couple high school code classes) making random very basic projects before starting a project that took me a few months and that wasn't even a dream game i just thought it was cool then like 3 months after that I started my (current) dream game. Even then, my current game is literally just a technical sandbox with cool example assets I've made out of necessity so I'm not exactly jumping into art and story prematurely... I've been working on my current game for exactly 4 years now. Took some breaks, got some jobs, wrote most of a book, got a degree in college, lived abroad for a bit, made some other games in the interim... But I always come back to that game. Regardless, nice video and uhhhhh, I still believe in the dreamers even if they're a bunch of fools. Heh.

7:25 sales tax may be automatically included in the price like in europe, and businesses may adjust the base price so the after tax price is a statisfying number, so i dont think sales tax can be written off entirely

As someone who has messed around with the Soundfonts in FL Studio, yeah it's a bit of a mess. Tons of duplicates, odd placeholder esc file names, included all the basic original windows soundfonts that his sounds were made from, etc.
