    Does the Jack lower slowly like that? Whenever I try to use my stands my Jack just drops fast asf even if I lower slowly. Its hard to describe but its like as I lower it (the jack) the turns get a bit more intense until I reach a point where if I turn it the pole the jack will just fall. Mind you the jack is still on the car at this point, it hasn't gone down much barely an inch

    Welding rods do not lose their tensile strength from being left out. Not trying to be mean, but that is not a solid repair. The braze needs to fully wet into the joint. Both sides. You really shouldn’t be instructing people on RUclips if you dont have the experience to do so.

    • @steelforestweldingandforge
      @steelforestweldingandforge 23 дня назад

      I will fully admit to not being a complete expert with brazing. I don't have a problem with admitting my faults. But welling rod's most absolutely do lose their tensile strength from bad storage conditions. I'll refer you to AWS D1.1 I look forward to see your brazing instructional video.

    • @mayfieldmetalworks7339
      @mayfieldmetalworks7339 23 дня назад

      @ You oversimplify with your statement in the video that welding rods lose their tensile strength because of improper storage. Contamination of the weld because of the condition of the flux or surface rust on the rod is what would cause the weld to not achieve the desired strength due to porosity or contamination/inclusions in the weld bead. This may have been what you were saying but you really need to expound on that and give the reason WHY if you are going to get on RUclips and try to teach others that know slightly less than yourself. As for my videos on brazing.. Why? There are a hundred other videos of actual competent welders and machinists providing basic and advanced instruction on this very subject. I have nothing to prove. I just don’t like seeing people who are not qualified trying to act as though they are. Sorry if that hurts your feelings.

  • @cavalry_doc
    @cavalry_doc 26 дней назад

    Squaring up the tool post not neccessary (as you saw later when cutting the angle on the rod). You need to learn about speeds and feeds (get a book) especially "the machinest handbook". Lubricate the hell out of the cut. Don't lubricate cast Iron but you can, although not required, lubricate non-ferrous metals. Keep your head away from the chuck, buy a head worn magnifier instead. Don't let your cothing get rapped up in the rotating parts. When drilling brass, break the edge of the drill bit, or the drill may want to screw itself into the work. The most important thing to remember is Keep your fingers and your eyes and keep your hair away from the moving parts. So much to say, so little time, i'm pushing 80.

    • @steelforestweldingandforge
      @steelforestweldingandforge 23 дня назад

      Sounds like some very solid advice. And yes, absolutely.I need to learn about speed and feeds. Especially with how to change out the gearing. I do own that book.I should probably read it. And that advice about breaking a drill bit for brass.That's a new one for me.Could you be a little bit more specific? honest question.

    • @cavalry_doc
      @cavalry_doc 23 дня назад

      Take an abrasive stone and take off the cutting edges so they ( 2 edges) are perpendicular to the axis of the drill, just a little bit! Basically dulling the edges.

    Your tongs and crucible handling tools are PERFECT! They are beautifully made, and grip the crucible in the perfect area, down at the bottom flank of the crucible, and don't put any heavy load or pinch on the crucible sides! You might have to adjust the tongs so they fit better in the furnace, but this is because the crucible is the largest they could fit in this furnace, and is actually too large for this diameter of furnace, but your design is flawless! You could go one step down on crucible size, and find it much easier to manipulate, without damaging the walls of the furnace. The amount of flex you have in your tongs is ALSO perfect. You want them to grip GENTLY, and not clamp down like a vise on the crucible. If they just gently spring up against the side of the crucible, as yours do, they will hold it perfectly safely, without stressing the ceramic in the crucible! You might want to start producing these crucible tongs for sale! They are REALLY NICE, and a perfect fit for the crucible you are using! The grippers that came with the furnace, you can throw away. They are worse than useless,. because the heavy clamping effect they put on the crucible is sure to damage or crack it very quickly.

    • @steelforestweldingandforge

      @williamMay-e7l Than you! I feel flattered. I am also a blacksmith. Going down a crucible size sounds like a good plan, I'm only worried my pouring set up might be too big. I guess we'll see. Thx for the comment and for watching!!!

    • @williamMay-e7l
      @williamMay-e7l Месяц назад

      @@steelforestweldingandforge You should see how you can streamline the production process for these tongs, because as soon as I saw them, I said to myself: "Those would be PERFECT for my #8 crucibles!". You could sell bunch of these to EVERYONE who owns one of these furnaces! My brother was a blacksmith and made mine, and yours look a lot better than the ones he made me, but he just hammered them out when I showed him my crucible. But he DID get the tong arms so they just gently clamp the crucible and flex a little rather than clamping hard.

  • @williamMay-e7l
    @williamMay-e7l Месяц назад

    Once the metal is melted, remove the crucible from the furnace for the pour. Add the flux. and skim off the dross on top, (Just ONE TIME!) Every time you stir it, you create more slag. Slag is dirt, but also oxidized aluminum. When you skim, you will see a shiny surface, and this will gradually dull over as the next layer of oxide forms. (Temp to reconstitute aluminum oxide is 15,000 degrees F. so it is possible to keep re-skimming, and eventually convert all the aluminum you melted, into slag.) Do your pour, make sure the crucible is drained of molten metal, and put it back in the furnace and put the lid back on to cool slowly. You will discover that the aluminum residue in the crucible will just peel off like aluminum foil after the crucible is cold. Avoid scraping and hacking at the crucible while it is still hot.

    • @steelforestweldingandforge
      @steelforestweldingandforge Месяц назад

  • @williamMay-e7l

    DON'T take the crucible out of the furnace to let it cool. Do your pour, put the empty crucible BACK in the furnace, put the lid back on it, and let it cool over the time of 8 hours or so. The slower you cool off the crucible, the longer it will last. When tempering it, fire it up, bring it to the red heat, and then just shut it off, and leave it alone. Don't remove the lid or take the crucible out of the furnace.

    • @williamMay-e7l
      @williamMay-e7l Месяц назад

      @@steelforestweldingandforge They will do that. Just the way graphite is. Molded graphite was used by the Germans for the control vanes that stuck into the nozzle area on the V-2 rocket, to guide the missile and keep it pointed straight ahead, since engine gimballing was beyond their technology. But at least you don't have to coat the molds with anything. They are just naturally dirty. But your metal castings should shrink as they cool, (which you showed in your pouring demo) and the metal should just fall out after it cools.

    The only critique I would add is to bend an arc upwards on the bottom horizontal leg of your stands. This would give a more solid footing (four corners touching the ground) should you not have a flat section of ground for placement. For example - a slight bow in the dirt would have the stove 'rocking' on a straight horizontal bar on the ground rather than just the four corners sitting more solid. Other than that - awesome my friend!

    • @steelforestweldingandforge
      @steelforestweldingandforge 2 месяца назад

      Good question. Welding brings a metal up to critical (melting) temperatures which for steel is about 2300 degrees F. This temperature is where the "break down" of cast iron occurs. Brass has a lower melting point of around 1700 degrees F which avoids damaging cast iron. Pre heating and slow post cooling is required because the cast iron will shrink or swell unevenly and cause it to crack.

    Nice work with a strong, well finished and nearly invisible joint.

      You know what, you are one hundred percent correct. And you would be surprised how much this molten copper would actually slosh around. It's not as viscous as you would think

      @marioaquilina6160 For the purposes of these review videos, I run these machines straight out of the box to manufacturers' settings. When I use them afterward, however, I adjust the settings as needed.

    How much (in volume) can you melt at one time?

    • @steelforestweldingandforge
      @steelforestweldingandforge 2 месяца назад

      @IguanaAirtrooper an exact quantity I couldn't give you off the top of my head. I can tell you it is a 6 kg crucible from amazon. I filled it about 2/3 full, and it was HEAVY! I probably won't be filling the crucible up any higher. I would worry I might drop it without making some larger tongs.
