The Fall of the Great Empire of the Dawn

There are many theories about the Great Empire of the Dawn (GEotD). They all mostly say the same thing: they were ancient dragonlords who once harnessed dragons before the Valyrians, leaving numerous structures across the world of A Song of Ice and Fire. They built the fused black stones like the Five Forts but also the oily/greasy black stones like Asshai. They were the predecessors of the Yi ...

The Secret Weapon of the Children | Game of Thrones
Your theories are fire (& ice)! Would love to see more videos from you.. I think you really cracked it. Would love to know what you think about the links between the starks and the others given your conclusions. For me the idea of the genocide of children of the forest really parallels the American genocide of indigenous population which for a United States writer makes a lot of sense.
Homage, the H is silent
Um...wow...Jaehaelor's dragon was eating ONLY people. And that fiery tree reads A LOT like the weirwood throne in the Eyrie. Ruby Ferns...is that a Where The Red Fern Grows reference? I love the poison us only used by women ideal...lol...fools. And Holy Crap!!! There are trees that are WALKING in the current books. Whispering Woods-those trees were moving. Brienne and Pod walk past the same broken wall twice because the trees moved on them. Arya, Gentry and Hot Pie...the trees shift and moved on them as well to redirect them away from their original destination goal. OmFg...they were eating Ghost Grass!!!!! They were eating Souls!!!!!!!
Good but how does House Dayne fit in?
Jaehaelor was murdered
Bloodraven is not the Three Eyed Crow
I more confused than ever now....
I wonder if the children of the forest found the first man who had green sight abilities and in order to protect there magic they sacrificed him not knowing he would turn into the night king
Is this a book I can get and read?
So what do you have to say about Dany’s vision in the House of the Undying? “Ghosts lined the hallway, dressed in the faded raiment of kings. In their hands were swords of pale fire. They had hair of silver and hair of gold and hair of platinum white, and their eyes were opal and amethyst, tourmaline and jade.”

Reminds me of a few somethings I heard a while ago. The children of the forest used a magic horn to move the land or something. Some theorize the land splitting was due to the root structure of the weirwoods being enormous and moving the land itself at the call of the horn. I wonder if the weirwood roots extend to the bottom of the sea, and could also rescue people underwater. Save their consciousness somewhere else, let the water keep their body cold and preserved, and then slap their brains back in later. Reminds me of how many theorize how Jon Snow will return.
Honestly I find most great empire of the dawn theories boring, I'd be disappointed if thry were true.
If this is true? Than i am surprised how good George R.R. Martin sloop it's so good lol i am actually interested in the east of essos a lot
These people were nameless because they were the men who survived battle with them in the lands beyond the forts. They had technology as the Steel Angels, but were losing the war. The moon exploded cutting off them from where the God on Earth went. Those bio specialists who knew how to genetically engineer the first dragons had written down a way to breed them into existence once more. The world has more than one hive mind on it. More than one "fungi network" . Plus humans are psychic, and capable of necromancy. Thus, "the lord of light" is literally the steel angels from the 1000 world series trying to get the children, the demons that attack through dreams, dead. The priests know of the moon exploding and that they were more before... I believe the sword Dawn was made from a Steel Angel ship trying to get through the debris of the former moon. The shadow, suspiciously named has liquids from down through Asshai and the corpse city Stygai, the radiation and debris from the Children's attack still leaks to this day. The giants, who knew the Oily back stone repels nature and the children... This was a refuge from the first city, where the humans first colonized, Kadath. The humans fractured and after a few hundred years most nothing was left but stories of the different races or emperors who lead their various races from the East to the west. I think the humans thought they might still try and live in peace and a war has been going on between Brynden and another, and the lord of light at least and Jon being legitimate was not foreseen by Brynden. The critical mistake that makes it possible for him to Battle "The corrupted heart of Summer" to be slain/sacrificed "The resurrected Night's King and Queen, to bring an end to Brynden, thus, is the Song of Ice and Fire. Because when the other moon explodes the children will sacrifice to the trees to make sure Bran is powered, Jon and his corpse bride will have learned the truth in the heart of the wall, and will lead the dead like he lead the wildlings...
oh my god are you kidding me. this is a gold mine. the garnishing plant that people are forbidden to eat but which changes the blood -- and then all the magic rituals about "king's blood"...and that reminds me of Aragorn and another king-something plant with which he could magically heal people -- but actually he had the blood of elves inside him...and the WHITE TREE -- that "came from somewhere special" --- that's a reference to the LOTR white tree too!! Oh god. GRRM has taken Tolkein's elves and written in details of noble privilege and classist violence. Growing tall. Bread that nourishes for very long -- again there was that in LOTR. RELATION OF the CotF!! And someone who would protect slaves from violence would himself kill a non dragonrider for eating the forbidden silk grass -- BLOOD of the dragon must remain PURE...
3:57 XD I agree. The symbolic hints inside the main series are way more important. Other than potentially helping explain the purple eyes of Daynes, there is no other motivation for GEoTD ever being real. Which is not to say it was inserted entirely thoughtlessly, there would be some nuggets of truth about the previous long night in there which GRRM does not have to commit too due to realistic distortion over many, many centuries. And honestly, just inserting the Daynes as a weird anomaly makes the world more realistic -- it kills the contrivedness effect of fictional anthropology where absolutely everything is known and explicable. GRRM can justify the features of Daynes, or it can just be a seed planted to remain an in-universe mystery. But if there is an explanation, it's probably that those people came from the same people as Valyria but also were contemporary to them. They are way more likely to have a connection to Starks. To the real long night. They are more concretely connected to the mystery of the first long night of Westeros than the GEoTD that is probably just a symbolic echo from the writer, and makes sense to insert because his events are planetos-climate-level. But again, he can remain uncommitted and non-concrete about them.
Is this just clickbait? This solidly does NOT debunk anything, especially if you've actually read the first fucking book lol. Try again with something worthwhile.
BOOOOOO, GROSS!
Dany's dragon dream appears in the 1st book. Zero chance the kingly looking men with pale swords and gemstone eyes appearing (obvious call out to the Great Empire of the Dawn's gemstone emperor's) was just throwaway material. He was thinking about it from the very first book. What he was talking about in the interview were maps. Thats all.
All the pieces of the puzzle needed to solve to novels are in the novels.
I guess that's why so much of the lore of Essos is so bad.
One question I have is: why did Jaehaelor’s regard for slaves change? At one point, he’s slitting a slave’s throat for eating a plant in Valyria, but later he’s dying protecting a slave in Volantis?
Yeah that threw me off as well
This doesn't "debunk" anything, GRRM's whole process is about the "Gardener" style, evolving and growing as he writes. Him explaining how he got to the point of fleshing out the East part of Essos doesn't mean that part is insignificant. To the contrary, it came as he was writing the second book, and enriched the world and story to where it grew after that. You can't just pretend that because he didn't start the series with it in mind, that it is nothing.
I don't get this video. What theory is being debunked? 🤔
Asshai is mentioned 17 times in A Game of Thrones. 60 times in the mains series. Asshai is east of Quarth. It is important. Illyrio sais the dragon eggs are ftom Asshai. Dany sees people from Asshai in Vaes Dothrak, Jora sais over and over, that Dany should run away with him to Asshai. Mirri Maz Duur studied in Asshai and met a westerosi Maester there (who we later finds out is Marwin the Mage), Quaith is from Asshai, Melisandre is from Asshai and so on. There are many examples, but you get the piont. George was thinking about an ancient land in the east connected to dragons, from the very beginning. Not to mention Asshai in this video appears a little dishonest to me.
Agree. I feel like he missed the actual headline, which is that George included the existence of all Asian cultural influences as filler for supplemental material IN A SERIES BASED AROUND THE EXISTENCE OF DRAGONS. Yes, dragons are part of a lot of mythologies. But that interview just made me realise how dismissive of people of colour and their cultural contribution to European and world history he seems to be.
All i want is a story set in ancient valeria. Hearing old tales of the empire if dawn days
Midwit take
mentioned 3 times in the world book = debunked 🤣
You're right that TGEotD was an after thought & will probably play no significance in the main story, but it should be pointed out that this is also how "gardening" works. You plant some seeds of half thought out ideas or cool sounding things in the moment, then see how they play out & possibly work them in to the main plot later Again, not saying that this is what's happening in this case, just that I wouldn't dismiss anything solely because it wasn't part of the plan from the beginning But in this specific case I think it's far more likely that things/places like TGEotD & Yi Ti, etc, are strictly for world building & lore purposes. But who knows 🤷🏼
LML in a nutshell lol
Everyone reading Shrubbery is focused on the white tree of flames and while interesting, I think the Silk Grass is too often overlooked. I always thought that the Valyrian had something other than blood magic to bind dragons, orherwise Asshaï would be the home of dragonriders. What if it's as simple as having "dragon catnip" ? An herb that when consumed makes dragons addicted and they used it mixed with sheep to create a diet for domestic dragons.
tbh: I always got the vibe of a deus ex machina when people were talking about the great empire. felt like this ancient aliens bs.
Mate, seeing an ancient empire from a non-European culture as "ancient aliens bs" IS the racist crap behind ancient aliens.
"Ghosts lined the hallway, dressed in the faded raiment of kings. In their hands were swords of pale fire. They had hair of silver and hair of gold and hair of platinum white, and their eyes were opal and amethyst, tourmaline and jade." -Daenerys IX, AGoT First book, four stones corresponding to Dawn Emperors mentioned, this was in Dany's vision after birthing Rhaego. So George certainly had a plan from the start here, he just hadn't conceptualized the physicalities yet. Later there's mention of dragons at YiTish court. George might as well hit us over the head with it. Edit: What also stands out is that the Daynes of First Men blood also have purple eyes but the Starks, who are First Men too, have special blue eyes not represented by any of the emperor stones. This suggests -the purple eye trait is very old and far from uniquely Valyrian -if George really uses eye color to imply relation then we can assume the Starks to be much more closely related to the inhuman White Walkers than the (allegedly) heavenly mandated human empire lineage
One throw away line in there is that Yi Ti claims to be heirs to that empire. Which means that while the Empire may have been in his mind the location claiming descent from it may in fact be false and the truth is closer to Westeros. Dany's dream was very likely inspired by the description of what Frodo saw on Weathertop in LotR. That said, the scene in Dany's dream bears a striking resemblance to a location that exists in Westeros. The Crypts of Winterfell. Which are long cold halls lined with kings holding swords. Further, through Mushroom, GRRM linked the crypts to the idea by suggesting a dragon was willing to lay a clutch of eggs in it. I'm not making a specific theory here, but you could imagine the Stark spirits who's swords have rusted stalking the Crypts. The eyes are curious as we would expect grey or blue in a Stark ghost, but perhaps much older Starks had different eyes before they started taking wives in conquest. Conspicuously those older statues are lost behind a collapsed area preventing us from seeing them. Lastly I would draw your attention to the name Yin Tar. Because of the similar pattern it's assumed this name connects to Yi Ti. However I'm going to write it like this for you Yintar, which is oddly close to Win Ter. Further, note the way the old tongue is structured. Wun Weg Wun Dur Wun. Again, oddly close to what we see in Yin Tar. Lastly, as relates to the house words of the Starks and the prophecies in the book. Winter is coming. Rewritten, Win Ter (or Yin Tar) is coming. If AA and Yin Tar are connected as is claimed they are different names of the same hero then the house words in the context of Asshai would be Azor Ahai is coming. The major problem with Dawn Empire theory is that we assume the belief the Yi Ti is correct in claiming to be heir to the seat and territory of the Dawn Empire.
Yup it doesn't get more obvious than this
Ah yes... the emperors of GEOTD were present in the first book, yet they are never mentioned again in the following ones... "the faded raiment of KINGS", it's just the Targaryen dynasty.
@@Oximb Valyrian familes all have shades of purple eyes. Targaryen was one lesser Valyrian dragonrider houses but even non-rider Valyrian houses (Valerion, Celtigar) have purple eyes. All stones mentioned for eye colors in Danaerys' vision come up again as titles of Dawn emperors. Last legitimate of those emperors was purple stone empress. Either George planted a seed there and later fleshed out a mythological heavenly lineage for the Targs to be a tiny remnant of, or this is the most obnoxious red herring ever brought to paper.
@@nouhorni3229 it can be remarkably difficult to figure out if something is coincidence or planned. What GRRM has said is that the gem references basically intended to suggest something magical or otherworldly. That's not to say he didn't intend or leave space to backfill later, or that he hasn't actually done that. It's definitely not the Targ dynasty in general. At best it suggests a line of descent to it, otherwise we'd see other Valyrian descendants with different gem eyes. There are potential links within however, though I could only guess at that relevance. For example, I suspect the gems to be symbols to some more recent elements in the story suggesting descent in some form from it. Take the Opal Emp, what is that? Well, to use a LotR example, Sarumon called White but when Gandalf looks closer his robes are opalecent, of many colours. Within GoT what this may actually call to in the Faith of 7, a suggestion that it could possibly be something ultimately connected to the Opal emp. Or those kings may have been given eyes as they were to be personified versions of factions in the story. There many even be a suggestion that the ones in her vision are surviving elements of the Dawn Empire still relevant while those added later have no relevance or active descent in the story. As I said earlier though. I think the point may be that the mistake we make is believing the Dawn Empire is actually rooted in the East. That it's mentioned earlier yet the far east was an after thought may suggest it was never actually connected to Yi Ti.
It makes sense The story and world is built upon ~1500 Europe. The furthering east, the less we're supposed to know and use our own imagination. It's never meant to be filled out
That's utter garbage, trade routes had been established for hundreds of years at that point. The maps weren't as accurate or prolific as we're used to, but they existed, as did knowledge of Asia, Africa and the middle east.
Yeah Westeros is where the story happens, even the legendary past, Westeros is where the Others attacked, where the Long Night must have been triggered. It would be weird if suddenly everything happened in a region that has never been mentioned in the main books, in a region where no characters will ever set foot in, by a group of people that has never been mentioned.
What does it matter it makes the world of asoiaf more interesting
Ashai very clearly is a Part of the Empire of the dawn too dismiss this u maybe as informt as the masters
The GEOTD's borders do not include the Shadow Lands, so Asshai was not part of the GEOTD.

Idk, I suspect Martin was using the GEOTD as a way to fill in R'hllor's backstory. I would link to an explanation, but RUclips doesn't tolerate people leaving their priso--uh, website... Essentially, R'hllor was originally the Maiden-Made-of-Light and fled with Asshai'i refugees to probably Valyria.
We just going to ignore the part where he says the moss smells like cum?
Single worst video in the history of RUclips. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
So who is going to tell David Lightbringer aka lml? Seriously though I do think GRRM will be using the GEOTD maybe to fill up a plot hole or two. At first he might have been annoyed at having to make up these new civilizations but it may give him an out in for some plotholes he runs into in the Endgame. Of course he can't overuse it because that'd be lazy
I certainly think fan theories are more detailed that George's actual world building. Because George himself doesn't seem to honestly know the answers to a lot of the questions he presents. He himself said he was a gardener when it came to writing, letting the story grow where it takes itself mostly. Which is also the root cause of a lot of problems tbh...
But Asshai is beyond Quarth and is mentioned in A Game of Thrones right from the very beginning? A city which is tied to dragons and must have been built by a great superpower in the ancient past, none of this is new it’s been in the books since the beginning
and this does not exclude the possibility that he created more in-depth lore and created more of the past of this world after, when he wrote about the far east any writer knows that a good part of worldbuilding especially involving the past is most of the time written after the main time where you will place your narrative, especially considering that George's writing involves coming up with things in the middle of the process, take for example the lore of the elder scrolls games, where originally the first dragonborn was the first human empress of the continent and then in Skyrim they created a new first dragonborn that actually existed long before her you will from time to time create worldbuilding and invent a basic scenario and then just fill the history of that scenario with increasingly ancient civilizations to deepen the history of that world
🤓
In TWOIAF, released in 2014, it is written that an Asshaii legend mentions a group of ancient from the Shadows that taught how to tame the dragons to the valyrians. So no, Asshaii is not tied to dragons and those people can't be from the GEOTD since the borders of that empire doesn't include the Shadows.
