I took this tractor apart expecting to replace the bearing side plate, but it's an uncommon style with a bushing instead of a bearing. I think I have it fixed and now I'm putting the engine back together.

Kohler Bearing Plate Change on a Wheel Horse 704
Просмотров 4504 месяца назад
The pull starter on this nice Wheel Horse 704 couldn't be bolted down properly. The bearing plate behind it had a broken corner so 1 bolt couldn't be used. Another hole in the bearing plate was stripped so that bolt couldn't be used. The engine side plate had to be changed. In this video I remove the side plate to find that it's rather unique. I hope I can find a replacement.

I've never had one like this, I'm gonna take a chance on it and see if I like it. I discovered the engine had too much crankshaft end play, so I took it apart to see why.

      It could be an electrical part (coil or wire) that quits working properly after it heats up. Also it could be a partially clogged fuel system, it would run bad after the fuel in the carburetor is used up.

      If you can find a hanger that will work you have to add or subtract weight to it until the beam balances with the slider weight on zero and no weights on the hanger.

    Those screens are interchangeable on the those ⚙️ geared pull starter clutch hubs. on those older styles of Kohler horizontal shaft small engine's like that one. Those are pressed on as we'll over that geared starter clutch hub. Lightly tap it with A rubber mallet.,or nylon mallet to pop it off to swap it over onto that other geared starter clutch hub.

    Greetings from Chile, I have a Kohler Magnum 10 engine, can you help me which carburetor I should install and what model of engine it is to request spare parts, K301, K181 or another model, thanks for the information.

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications 2 месяца назад

      Hi, the magnum series of engines came after the K series engines so they are a little different. Your magnum 10 should have a decal on the flywheel cover, on the carburetor side. It should show the Model number, Spec number, and Serial number. Those are the numbers you should use to find a carburetor, you need all three. If the numbers are not there all you can do is ask for parts for a Kohler Magnum 10. The Magnum 10 and Magnum 12 both use the same size carburetor. You can search for Kohler Magnum 10 carburetor on the internet. Try to buy one that has the choke and throttle linkages that hook up the same way as your old one.

      I live in Ohio. You'd like to find somebody in your area, I'd go to www.wheelhorseforum.com and post a question there. It's a website called Red Square, by and for wheel horse collectors. Add some pictures to the question to find out what it is and it's possible value. Try to get opinions from different people that don't know each other. Value can vary greatly based on small details.

      I definitely plan on finishing it, but I don't know when. I have a different used crankshaft, and some good used brass thrust bearings, but I don't have that pin that's half ground away. I might have to make one. Then stuff gets in the way. I hope to have it back together for next mowing season.

    Thanks for your videos. I'm working on a JD 112 and and your video series was very helpful. Mine was wired POSITIVE to GROUND... is that normal? Has anyone else seen that?

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications 3 месяца назад

      That's not normal, I think it's probably a mistake. I"d check the manual. I don't have any JD books so I don't know if an operators manual would have any wiring info, it might have to be a service manual. If you have a Kohler engine with a Delco-Remy starter generator they are normally negative ground.

    • @Dale-s1u
      @Dale-s1u 3 месяца назад

      @@PackratsFabrications Thanks for the quick reply. In your video, you have the battery with the terminals towards the front of the tractor, and the ground cable is on the left side terminal. Aren't most small batteries positive on that side?

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications 3 месяца назад

      The batteries are available either way. I used one of my Wheel Horse batteries, I don't know what the JD should have. I also don't have the battery hold down bracket, that might dictate which style should be used.

    • @Dale-s1u
      @Dale-s1u 3 месяца назад

      @@PackratsFabrications Does it make sense that with the positive side grounded, it seems to run fine and the voltage regulator is charging the battery?

    • @PackratsFabrications
      @PackratsFabrications 3 месяца назад

      That's interesting, I've never thought to try it. In the Delco-Remy Starter/Generator service manual the example circuits are shown as negative ground. When I buy a regulator the box or documents usually say for negative ground systems so maybe you'd have to change the regulator. The starter is a DC motor so I'd think it would run backwards if you connect it backwards. It seems to me it might work if you have a starter that turns the correct direction (Cub Cadet starter generators turn the other direction) and possibly a positive ground regulator if they are different. If anybody knows for sure, add a comment.
