Try their track The Way Of All Flesh, what a track that is

From Mars to Sirius might be seen as their opus, but it’s a mushy recording. Still epic, but they have 3 better albums for me. Terra Incognita, Twoaf and L’enfant Sauvage are better. Gojira, just look at their ‘The Link Alive’ concert. Remembrance or other tracks. They’re the quintessence of death metal imo. Prime Gojira is the best metal out there. Together with Tool and Opeth the big 3 for me.

I mean at that point enslaved had moved on to black/progressive and the "viking" element is their lyrics, even that is more abstract than pure "vikingrr pillage and grape, christianity hurt me deeply" ect. Great band.

UNLEASHED, if you seek Viking metal, there is no equal.

Both these albums played a huge part in my appreciation for extreme metal. 🤘But If I was introducing an old school death metal fan to Opeth I would've given them "My Arms, Your Hearse". Sounds more like old school death and black metal and the songs are shorter and more... in your face so to speak. And im seeing Nile in London next month 😁

Calling Ensiferum Viking metal is a bit of a stretch. They're usually classed as folk metal or maybe pagan metal, with strong thrash and melodic death influences. Typically I see Viking metal used as a label to refer to a specific style of black metal that included Bathory and Enslaved, or else more broadly to bands that sing about Norse culture like Amon Amarth, Unleashed, Tyr, or King of Asgard. Ensiferum isn't black metal and doesn't sing about Norse but Finnish culture and mythology. Still a great band though. They'd fit better with an analysis of folk metal bands - which also includes a lot of "Viking" themed bands.

Seen Ensiferum (FIN) multiple times, very underrated band. Although ManOwaR (USA) and Heavy Load (SWE) were among the first to heavily adopt norse mythology lyrics, the viking metal sound was defined by Bathory (SWE). The finish perspective presented by Ensiferum is quite unique I would say.

I've just come back from Bloodstock and saw Enslaved, I was really excited to see them. Enslaved really go in to Norse theology in their 2000> albums. Their earlier ones are more about the historical accounts of raids and the gods (see Blodhemn and Eld and Frost). They took a different turn from the 2000s. They love bands like Pink Floyd and proggy shit like that. I think they can be a bit hit and miss with their experimentation, but when they're good they're great. I had the chance to meet them in the signing tent, but I chickened out cos I got star struck. And I'm lame.

Also, you guys might be interested to know that when the original line-up broke, the bassist and drummer started another band called Rammesses, so if you dig their style and the way they play together, there is a little more to hear from them out there.. I think they're defunct now and never really made it like EW did and continue to do, but still. Correction, Tim Bagshaw took up guitar for this project

Fascinating stuff guys, I think Dopethrone is probably one of those albums a band makes that they never really surpass. Dunno. I saw em once touring their follow up album Let Us Prey, and I puked up everywhere.

Converge is not metalcore, it's hardcore. Metalcore is a sub-genre of emo.

Annihilation is still my favorite Nile album, and they've put out some damn good ones. To my knowledge Karl Sanders doesn't have a degree, just a commitment to the theme. The drummer from this album forward is George Kollias. It was kind of shock when he took over because the US death metal scene hadn't really heard of him and out of nowhere comes this fully formed frickin' hellbeast of a drummer. Those long-ass song titles are quite often inspired by or translated directly from ancients texts. "Papyrus Containing the Spell to Preserve its Possessor Against Attacks from He Who is in the Water" from Ithyphallic is another one. And yeah, Karl will just throw that shit out from the stage like it's nothing. The other guitarist on this album is Dallas Toler-Wade, who left back in 2016. If you dig Nile, you'll probably like his band Narcotic Wasteland. They're a bit more raw sounding but no less technical.
