Night on Bald Mountain - NOTEPERFORMER 3.0
As a fun summer project, I decided to hand input, note-for-note, Rimsky-Korsakov's version of Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain" into my notation program (Sibelius Ultimate) for the purpose of studying the orchestration techniques by immersion. I also wanted to showcase how, even without any further studio manipulation, the Noteperformer playback does a pretty respectable job of realizing the score, including some of the extended techniques such as stopped horns and col legno strings.

      Quite a compliment to put me on the same compositional plane as the dynamic duo of Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov! Alas, this was all theirs, though I transcribed the entire score note-for-note from an IMSLP score to produce this--quite a task in and of itself. But, a truly fun and informative one at that! I'd do it over again just for that reason! 😃

      @stefan.kraus-composer You have made my day!! Seriously. Ever since I started using Noteperformer, I've marveled at its power and accuracy, especially for the orchestral medium. No one virtual instrument engine does live strings justice, but NP still does not disappoint. My main complaint would be the suspended cymbal sounds are way too choppy and artificial, but, again, that's kind of nitpicky considering the program is incredibly affordable and works seamlessly with the "top 3" professional notation programs (Sibelius, Dorico, and [the late] Finale). I did not alter any of the dynamics, hairpins, etc., nor did I mess with the equalizer even once, and this remains a rather convincing mockup on which even Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky could put their imprimaturs. :)

      You know, the funny part about that little chorale was I was literally thinking of you when I wrote it. Something about goose egg and how to make that structure stand out among other goose-egg structures. I started out with the soaring, non-vib Oboe singing, then thought ... no, this chorale needs to introduce itself first. Made it all the more "delicious and nutritious" when the Oboe did come in! I'm honored so much by your response. This piece was almost just an "exercise" in woodwind writing. Imagine that. 👀

    Very intriguing fugal subject. On only two listens, I can remark: it starts off with this almost thumping the downbeats, then as soon as it sets up the expectation of a straightforward meter, immediately starts meandering all over in what seems like a crazy hemiola or flourish of different meters.... It's very interesting and kind of addictive- I keep wanting to listen to it again and try to figure out how to notate it, somehow the bugger of a rhythm surprises me every time I hear it!!! I don't hear a tonal answer when the second voice comes in, and I don't hear an architecture of episodes with key changes moving between subject statements, so I'm guessing you weren't trying to follow the "rules" and conventions of "formal" fugal writing. It's a very nice final product, though, very interesting, original and quirky- certainly not run-of-the-mill! I do like how short and concise it is, too! Your story of overcoming so many obstacles to make your music is very inspiring as well. Good job!

      Well, you just made my day! You pegged it right on. I am a definite rule-breaker. I suppose, when I diligently studied my canons, fugues, and 16th century modal counterpoint treatises, I got the devilish idea to constantly play the edges without completely ripping the heart out. Sometimes, admittedly, it is because I'll be in the middle of composing, get a little lost, and then think--hey, maybe that's not a mistake but rather an opportunity! I love to take something that originally doesn't seem to fit and make it work. And, oh, I love a good hemiola. Although, every time I say it, I swear it sounds like a particularly bothersome medical condition! 😂 I also appreciate that you really dug in and took the time to read my bio. I was hoping that could inspire some colleagues or anyone going through a spell of self-doubt. It means a lot that you noticed. 🙂

    This is a beautiful piece Laura, and will sound wonderful performed live! .......Peace! 🎼❤️ I also truly enjoyed and respected reading more about your personal life, and your trials and tribulations in life. I was considered a "child prodigy" when I was a boy in Vienna, and with my teachers when I moved to the US. I also had a wonderful and profitable career as a composer and musician for many years from being a teen, into my late 30's. Then I was crippled in a bad vehicle accident one night, and lost the full use of my hands from injuries and nerve damage for 2 years. In the blink of an eye, I lost all the virtuosity on the piano and guitar that took me decades to develop. I could not play the piano because my thumbs were "frozen" in a stiff open position, and my other fingers had very little feeling (and I also had back and spine issues). Though somehow, I was able to continue earning a living after a few months from the accident, by playing guitar with some rock bands, and using "duct tape" to "glue" the guitar pick into my right hand, so I wouldn't drop the pick (I could not feel my hands), and slowing down and simplifying any guitar solos. After 2 years of extensive western medical treatments, using up all my insurance money, and no positive results, I finally went to a Chinese acupuncturist. I had only 10 treatments with her for an hour each, at $50 a treatment (only $500 compared to the tens of thousands that US doctors took from me!). Then one night packing up at a gig, I picked up a microphone stand with my 4 fingers, and I heard a loud "click," and noticed that my thumb had bent for the first time since the accident. In about an hour, my other thumb bent as well, and in a few days, the "clicking" noise stopped. Then I started to get more feeling in my other fingers as well, and began practicing very hard again. Sadly, even with all the practice, I was only able to get back about 60-70% of the playing ability I had before the accident. Though I realized that even though my fingers were damaged, my musical mind was still sharp, and I began composing my classical music in my 40's. I adopted your same philosophy; “What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger,” and I am so blessed to have an entirely new life and career as a classical music composer for the rest of my life. I have so much respect for you, and not giving up the "fight," and I wish you all the best in life, and with your music....Peace! 🎼❤️

      What an insightful comment! You're right on the money too. With any growth, there is a complex struggle amidst the victories. When I wrote this, I was going through a pretty big one myself!! And, I was burning the midnight oil--hence the blooming at night!! Awesome that you caught that.

    Laura, this is such a wonderful and beautiful Harp composition! I could feel the night, and the "see" the blooming of the Jasmine flower, and the sweet and intoxicating scent of it's bloom. I hope this piece will become a part of many Harpists performing repertoire. I have used the Harp in some of my orchestral compositions, though as an orchestral instrument, and nothing as 'grand" as this wonderful solo composition......Peace! 🎼❤

      Gerald, that was an amazingly kind and rather eloquent and creatively descriptive review of this little piece of mine--simply bowled me over today. Actually, I really needed the morale boost! The pandemic has been so hard on musicians and their careers that it's difficult to focus these days. I'm hoping we're rounding the corner, though, and will see things start to improve all around. 🙏 I did two harp workshops with the amazing woman who performed/recorded this for me. Definitely improved my harp writing tenfold! 🙂

      @@laurajhball You should be VERY proud Laura! The Harp is a difficult instrument, and no composer or performer will master it, unless they fully understand all the pedaling techniques, and how to use the flats and sharps of each key. I am NOT one of those "experts," and also had to consult with a wonderful local Harpist here in NE Ohio, when I used the Harp for the first time in my Winter Poem. I also learned from her, that a Harpist can only play a maximum of 4 notes with each hand, unlike playing a piano. There are small "issues" in my Winter Poem score (and possibly a few other pieces where i used a Harp), that a professional Harpist would have notated differently, because of the quick changes to flats and sharps in a few areas, and with a very fast and long A7 chord glissando. Though in the end, she told me that a pro would understand my intent, and be able to translate what I had written to how a Harpist would perform it. I gave a sigh of relief, and moved on....Ha!....Peace! 🎼❤

    Your take on the theme sounds vaguely like something Basil Poledorous would do. It's quite good, and I will sub just to see what it sounds like live. Personent Hodie is a personal favorite of mine, but I find most arrangements lacking. I really think as a processional it should have a much steeper rise in intensity to a high peak, but so few conductors seek let alone achieve this effect.

    • @laurajhball
      @laurajhball 3 года назад

      Ohhhhh I had not even thought of the similarity to thematic color use of Poledouris!! You've got me hankering to listen to those chocolatey, glorious soundtracks again. What a lovely and surprising compliment! Thank you! 😊 I, too, can't wait until the orchestras start playing live again so I can finally hear this as intended! I'm chomping at the bit, even to hear our community ensembles give it a whirl! I tried to keep the writing relatively accessible.

      And, as to a steeper, more punctuated climax, I couldn't agree more. The tutti is written at fortississimo (with brass fully unbridled and piccolos on the loose), so, even with a less intrepid conductor, hopefully the point will get across. 😁

      Just wanted to let you know this work got a "yes" from a local symphony director for when orchestras are allowed to play live again. It's a lovely community and it will be interesting to sit in on rehearsals to see how each part is handled by them. Very instructive! :)
