    Greta turn in a tight spot 🎉. When I tired my first turn in a winding hole the wind was so bad I got stuck but luckily my partner took over and I got to use the pole to push us off the bank I was stuck on 😂. Great driving Wendy, I recognise the look of concentration…I have the same look when I’m driving. Enjoying your videos.

      @LoveTwoTravel not sure about looking over the top, but when going through bridges/locks just keep your eyes on the side nearest you...there is enough room, so as long as your left side is close you'll get through the gap. My partner taught me that one 😁

    Loving your videos, so professionally put together. We’ve hired narrow boats a few times and due again in 2 days time? We’re hiring from Braunston and still trying to decide between going on the Oxford south canal or on the grand union towards Milton Keynes and Leighton Buzzard. Sadly no heatwave predicted for next week! I know how Wendy feels doing the locking…I must remind myself to do some of the driving next week 😂

      Thank you for the kind words and we really appreciate you watching!! Jealous to hear you're heading out on the canals, wish you all the best and a fun time!! We should be on the canals again in April 2025 and oddly enough, we want some wet weather so we can get the full experience in preparation to constant cruising. Wendy wasn't keen on driving (or steering we've been told) but she really enjoyed it once the nervousness went away:) Have fun and be safe!

      @@Hilary_ClarbySoaps Thank u for watching! It’s all hubby’s (Laur) efforts on how pro his editing is. How did the hire boat go this time, where did u decide? Yes definitely give yourself a break from the locks and start driving to get a comfort level. It’s less strenuous for sure!!

    • @Hilary_ClarbySoaps
      @Hilary_ClarbySoaps 27 дней назад

      @LoveTwoTravel we couldn't decide so did both! We went down the Oxford as far as Banbury then turned and went from Braunston down the grand Union as far as Bugbrook. It was great. Although my Oxford lock driving experience didn't go so well. I steered into the lock fine, no bumps, but when the water was let in it propelled the boat forward and bumped the front gate breaking 2 wine glasses. Dented my confidence a bit but I managed some other locks going down this time 😁

    On gloves, I'd suggest cycling gloves, they arent too cumbersome but offer a decent amount of protection. Ive long hair and i often run a large bowl ( like a mixing bowl) of water and take it in the shower. I find it rinses through easier. Ive never used a radio when ive had a travel companion. I think you'll find that once youve been out for a few weeks, you'll know what the other is doing. I mentioned the Upper Thames elsewhere, i do love rivers, thats quite a challenge. For your shopping, you need a shopping trolley, aka a granny trolley. You can always spot narrowboaters doing their shopping🤣 Id think the only thing i could suggest and i guess its too late now, is do a trip in winter, when its cold, muddy and raining non stop for 5 days. For the full experience. I have really enjoyed your vlogs on the Oxford. Look forward to bumping - not literally - on the cut in your own boat

      Wonderful hearing from you Hilary and thank you for all the great feedback and tips! Your idea about the winter cruise isn’t too late! Although not technically winter, we’re coming over in late March 2025 for another NB experience 😄 Unlike a lot of boaters we’re hoping for some cold and slightly wet weather for just the reasons you had for the suggestion! Sorry if we jinx that time of year for everyone 👀

    I loved that and your previous videos. Ive been moored above Banbury for 2 years and the Oxford is a much favoured canal. I did the same trip last year in mid July. Life jackets, ive never worn one on a river. I would if the river was looking fast flowing, though i stay off them in winter. If you liked the Cherwell, i can highly recommend the Upper Thames from Oxford to Lechlade, though moori g is a lot trickier. That does get very curvy, but so beautiful.

      Thank for joining us on our narrowboat adventures! Loved your suggestions in your other comment and we agree, the Oxford was more beautiful than we could’ve hoped for. While we didn’t make it to Banbury, looks like our boat will launched in Rugby so Wendy and I are debating heading south to see the parts we missed in this adventure. It’s fair to say we’re very excited at the opportunity to retire to the canals and quite frankly, that’s in no small part due to the kindness of you and your comments that make up the NB community! Quick question and don’t feel you’ll offend, are the real time videos worth publishing? Are you, and do you think others will enjoy them? We’re publishing our Iceland travel adventures now but can throw up some more real time videos after. Would love to hear your thoughts! Take care and stay safe!

      I'm temporarily in Rugby at Brinklow for 2 months before heading back to Cheshire where my house is in August. BTW, if you head south from Rugby, its particularly beautiful in my opinion between Braunston and Wigrams turn. Plenty of armco to moor up on, love just before Bridge 103. Nice circular walk if you cross over the bridge. There are very few unpleasant people on the canals. Most people are helpful and generous. Real time are tricky. I enjoy them occasionally. Phil on Narrowboat journeys has done some, you could check and see how his views are. On the subject of diamond shaped locks, there is one on the River Avon, no idea why. Avon is even more beautiful than the Upper Thames and far more river like than the Cherwell!

    Wendy needed to stand on a box or something, so she could see better when at the helm, would have made a huge difference for her, it is NOT a contact sport that is absoloute tosh, there is no excuse for hitting another persons boat, a narrow bridge side a slight bump ok, ramming lock gates definately NOT! The hire companies staff are not entitled to make a statement like 'its a contact sport'

    • @LoveTwoTravel
      @LoveTwoTravel 9 месяцев назад

      You're on point with the box suggestion, Wendy had the same thought while we were cruising. We've spoken to our builder and they have a very cool suggestion!! We totally agree that narrowboats should NOT be considered a contact sport and to be clear, College Cruisers never encouraged that thinking at anytime. If anything they were concerned there was that mentality on the canals at all! Thank you for joining us on this adventure, would love to hear your thoughts on the rest of our trip, and don't miss the real time cruising videos!

    If you haven't found out yet, life-jackets and also a anchor are needed but only on tidal locations on rivers. However it is advisable to have them to hand, as you can get out of your depth quick even on rivers that have any kind of flow and check if it is safe. Always look and check at where your going to travel and be aware of what will or maybe could present itself, always expect the unexpected. Have fun

      Thanks for this answer! How do you know if a river is considered tidal? We were going on and off the River Cherwell from the Oxford canal and there didn't appear to be any signs saying whether it was, nor did we see anyone with lifejackets:)

    Glad you enjoyed your trip! 🥳 Here’s our take on the answers: 1. Most of the time it’s a case of waiting for someone to turn up, but in very rare circumstances when there’s no one around, a very careful bit of encouragement from the boat may be required! (But you didn’t hear that from us 😅) 2. You can’t really avoid the nettles, but we sometimes trim them a bit when we moor up if necessary. As for the stings, washing with soapy water or a dock leaf can work, but generally we just get used to the sting 😂 3. Be less clean 😂😂 4. The bruises never stop. To be honest we’re impressed it was just bruises and not cuts too 😂 where they come from is often a mystery!

      Great hearing from you and thank you for your answers!!! 1. Understood, wink wink. A boater went that route on a diamond lock further up Oxford and prepped us in case we made it that far! 2. lol 3. 🙄 4. Ugh. We just want to add here, because the comment may get lost among all the others on your @BoatTime RUclips Channel. We were so happy to hear you're shooting for being full time youtubers by the end of 2024. Wendy and I have our fingers crossed for you both. If anyone deserves it, you guys most certainly do!

    Enjoyed the video. When and where are you renting from next? Answers to some of your questions (sorry can't remember them all!) Not had a big problem with stinging nettles, just try not to moor too near them. Have however had a few problems with bees recently which was more concerning 😂😂 Water, ours lasts over a week but we make sure to top up every Wednesday so we don't run out other than that we don't worry about it too much, just be careful not to waste it. Unless we're iced in that is, then have to be really careful and fill up bottles etc. Communicating - we use walkie talkies for locks, when we remember to charge them 😂 They can be really useful. We don't have a problem when cruising as our engine is really quiet thankfully 😁 Are you having a boat built?

      Wonderful hearing from you and thank you for your answers! Charging the two-way radios was a real aha moment for us and can see how it would be easy to forget that. To your point and answering your question about our future boat, yes we're having one built and we're leaning heavily into electric. Like you, we wouldn't have to battle the engine noise. We're hoping to decide on a builder in the next few months (fingers-crossed!) We should squeeze at least one more NB holiday before launching our own boat! Where we rent from will come down to which canal we're hoping to cruise, so any suggestions would be great!

      @@LoveTwoTravel I believe most builders mostly have long waiting lists so that might be worth checking out as might help make your decision. I'm not sure where to suggest canal wise. We did a number of hiring holidays but our choices were highly influenced by location as was during COVID so we didn't want to travel far, and we also chose by the boats themselves as we wanted to try different lengths, layouts etc to help us decide whether we wanted to live aboard initially, and then to help choose our own boat. We normally watched RUclips videos of canals we were thinking of holidaying on to get an idea what they were like before we decided so you could do that. Oh the only other suggestion I have is maybe look at the Monmouth & Brecon canal in Wales. It's stunning and isn't connected to the main network so you're unlikely to do it again in your own boat 😊

      @@narrowboatpuravida We like the way you're thinking. We had the Monmouth & Brecon canal on our short list for the last trip, for many of the reasons you mentioned. We're lucky the builders we're talking to have room for us and we're hoping to have that deposit on the slot sooner than later :) Enjoying your videos!

      I had read that sometimes the 2 way radios have too much voice traffic on them, so hoping w an electric boat, that would be workaround!

    Went wells, next times and lots of questions. Nope not a corporate retreat but a look back at our narrowboat adventure and one step closer to constantly cruising the English canals! Can you answer our questions, they're listed in the description below!

    When you come back, come to Yorkshire and experience the Leeds/Liverpool canal. You can experience the 2, 3, and 5 Rise Locks at Bingley. The wonderful countryside on the way past Silsden, Kildwick to Skipton, with its castle and known as the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. Then there is the Curly Whirlies, a twisty contour experience through some of the most scenic countryside in the UK. Then on to Foulridge Tunnel, famous because it was built as a huge trench, a tunnel arch roof built over the cut and then the soil was covered over the whole thing as if nothing had happened. Plus the famous cow that fell into the canal and swam the whole way through and was revived with a pint of beer from the pub at the other end. You can thank me later. ❤

      This sounds like exactly what we're looking for! Would this be something we do when we start out journey in our own NB, or do it using a rental. We're renting one more time before launching our own home on the canal :) Thanks for the great ideas!

    Hi guys, just found your vlog and really enjoyed it. We did the Oxford about 3 months ago and it is beautiful. We've lived on our narrowboat for just over 2 years now and absolutely love it. If we could offer two bits of advice, they would be: 1) Make sure you get a full survey done before buying, if you go for a used boat. 2) If you want to do the whole network then you would be better off getting something no longer than 58ft. Hope this helps. Andy & Lesley.
