I remember where I was when I first heard this song. Had to be 91 or 92....I was in college....my roommate had one of those huge Cadillac's....like a boat....Yellow. I borrowed it to run an errand, was going over a speed bump on campus, and this song came on. One of the all-time greats. Funny that the only other song I remember where I was when I first heard it was Royals, by Lourdes....from 2013.

This was '73, he went on until '77 when he passed. This charity concert for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund was expected to raise $25,000 but it raised $75,000 & Elvis bought the 1st ticket donating $1,000. There was no set ticket price, people were told to pay whatever they wished. Thanks to the genius of producer-director Marty Pasetta, he had the runway built. Pasetta told Parker (Elvis' manger) that he wanted to build a runway for Elvis to walk out onto & Parker said no. Pasetta explained that it would be 8 ft. wide & Elvis could stay in the middle or go to the left or to the right if he wanted to because Pasetta knew how important the audience was to Elvis, but Parker still said no. Fortunately, Pasetta was able to meet w-Elvis & he explained exactly what he told Parker. Fortunately again, Elvis overrode Parker & told Pasetta to build the runway. Pasetta told Elvis he wanted him to lose some weight & Elvis lost 25 lbs. Elvis then hugged Pasetta & said you are one of the few people who has been totally honest w-me. Without that runway the concert would have been very different if Elvis did not have the opportunity to get in close touch w-the audience. Elvis had something that very few singers had or have besides just a good voice & that is the emotion. There are many singers w-good voices but they are just singing. Elvis passionately put in his whole soul & gut into every song he sang, even the upbeat ones. And that is the difference him & everyone else -- not counting all the other factors, of course.

This song came out not long before I joined the Australian Regular Army and it has had a very profound effect on Australians of my generation and others. When I served overseas in a ‘war zone’ the songs lyrics took on a whole new meaning as I could relate them rather than just listen to them. To this day it is still a very emotional experience to listen to it. Thank you for listening to an all time classic Aussie song.
