Where The Crawdads Sing (Delia Owens) - Book Review | The Bookworm
My sister said loaded with bad language. So I won't even start it
Obviously an academic review!! If you understood deprivation and politics a little more you may have gotten a better understanding of Mr Steinbecks intentions. My favourite book, and I’ve read a lot .
I love these reviews!
Thanks, I love making them!
The Diary of a Young Girl was not a diary, but a wonderful fraud with multiple authors. Taints it, don't you think?
What makes you think it was a fraud?
Hey, new subscriber!
Thank you and welcome!
You mean the good guys won? Cool. Very cool. Settle down it's a joke not Netanyahus dick! Don't take it so hard lol
I have read a number of Sophie Hannah novels but none with Christie's Poirot. I am not sure about an author using another author's creation to write their own book. Having said that the book group I am in in the UK will be reading The Monogram Murders next month, another of Hannah's Poirot attempts. As for her own crime novels I find Hannah can be extremely good or downright awful. There seems to be no middle ground for me.
Let me know what you thought of The Monogram Murders after you've read it!
Shady pines!
I think adding Sophia Patrillo to this book could have made it a lot more fun!
I've not been sure about picking up a Sophie Hannah. You haven't helped 😁. My favourite murder mystery? That's tough. "And Then There Were None" is definitely a contender. And if you like Golden Age detective novels, I can recommend the 'Shedunnit' podcast. Well researched and presented.
I LOVE And Then There Were None, and I also like your Handle. I've been doing Origami for more than 25 years...!
@@thebookworm6554 You have some catching up to do, I've been folding for close to 50 years!! And I even attended the German convention a few years ago in Erkner (I'm from Scotland). It was great fun. I found your channel a while ago and noticed that we seem to have similar tastes, which means I can use your reviews as a good base when you review something I haven't read. I look forward to them 😊 Keep up the good work and Frohe Weihnachten!
@@origamidennis Wow, cool! Well, I'm 36 so it will be a while until I can say I've been doing Origami for 50 years! And I can't believe there was a convention in Erkner, I used to live in Brandenburg!!!
Interesting review. I'm surprised you made no mention of the I Ching and how the characters use it to make decisions; Philip K Dick actually used it himself to write the novel, and the fictional author of The Grasshopper Lies Heavy is also said to use it to write his book - making the title character the inverse of Dick himself. This is why I interpret the book almost the opposite way - I *don't* think the Axis victory scenario is that important, it is merely used to convey how history hinges on chance.
Ah if the mystery is not executed well as you say I'll give it a miss. That's most of the fun for me with this genre. I don't mind people using this kind of IP though. I read some recent Sherlock Holmes books and they were pretty good, despite a new author.
I love your passion for reading and your accent makes it all the more enjoyable. I hope your channel grows.
Thank you!!
I loved this book and its characters. I will disagree forever. But I respect your opinion. This book is going to stay with me forever
You're not alone. I think I'm the only one who hated this book...
Books just telling stories without resolution, my favourite. Stubborn characters, ah my people.
The ideas behind the book are solid, and the pace of the book makes you think that all the questions we have as readers are going to be answered neatly by the end. But sadly there were just too many coincidences and gaps for me for the book to be great
The premise of that book had some potential I think. Sounds like it was a good idea very badly mishandled. A wasted opportunity. I think Iay just read one of the Dickens or perhaps Tolkien Christmas Letters.
I agree
😀
Someone suggest more books like this one please 🥺
I felt the time jumps were really effective in this instance - I am not sure it would have worked otherwise. Having said that, I didn't love the ending and found the killer's motive and some story lines unbelieveable and the characters (Hannah mostly) unlikeable.
Couldn't finish the book. The sexual violence too much
I understand, it's not easy.
The end does not justify the means cos the means is the end.
This sounds like Paula Volsky's "Illusion". It's also a historical fantasy based around the French Revolution and magical nobles facing their comeuppance. Have you read that?
I haven't heard of it, but now I'm intrigued. Thanks!
Eleanor and Perdu are my favorite characters. And I agree, I thought the story would be grander because of how many different creatures were used but it was okay. I probably wont read the sequel. I'd say A Secret History of Witches was MUCH better with very beautiful uplifting settings that show us how magnificent the earth is.
Well yes, he is a muderous asshole, but he only kills one man in the entire book.... Frankenstein killed like, 5?
Yes it was like a nature documentary. While the alternative more technologically advanced reality was interesting the characters and the story were very boring.
I agree with your review. I found the book to be very touching on the emotions at times. What a surprise ending indeed!
😊
So disappointed about Part II. I want mormons to stop living in my head rent free 😭
🤣
Bookworms - what is your favorite historical fantasy novel?
The Temeraire series 🐲
@@smileytpb Indeed!
Bookworms, which are you favorite protagonists who are also the villains?
I feel so seen with your review. Thank you. So unbelievably boring. No climax. No surprises.
Its typically how i think all girls see the world.
My favourite PG Wodehouse - Code of the Woosters. Favourite Pratchett - Mort
Yes, Mort is indeed a fan favorite!
How's about a new tune
I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of it but I felt like King didn't know how to tie it up in the last 1/3.
Yes, he does seem to have issues with ending, does he?
@thebookworm6554 it seems to me like he often has not figured out the ending and writes himself into a corner
There is also 'Malice Aforethought' where the protagonist is planning a murder and we see what he does and what happens after. There are similar 'inverted' detective novels and the T.V. series Columbo successfully worked with that premise.
I didn't watch a whole lot of Columbo (more of a Murder She Wrote gal), but I suppose every crime series has villain protagonists. Law and Order LOVE playing with that grey zone, they have tons of cases where the murder was revenge, or a person who couldn't tolerate the abuse anymore etc.
I like the book and the movie well enough, but (similarly to Dracula) I have a hard time rooting for agents/advocates of the Catholic Church. I more or less find myself rooting for the demonic characters since they represent rebellion against religious authority.
Interesting perspective... Although followers of the church of Satan usually aren't evil but as you mentioned - are just rebelling against the current church, Pazuzu here made a little girl miserable, so I wasn't exactly rooting for him. On the other hand, many of the adults were rather unlikable...
Great video. You’re wonderful. Thank you.
Just finished this book and was checking if anyone actually gave a good review, cause this was a 3/10 horror book at its max. Boring read
I appreciate your review. I remember reading the book & thinking to myself how happy I was that there was a final book that would combine books 1 2 & 3 & that the series would have a proper finale- just like you said, midway through the book I started to feel as if I was losing a little bit of interest because the writing started to become messy. I think the biggest flaw for the book is that it’s really too long & too detailed & sometimes The story gets lost in that length & in those details. But I suppose it was not an easy thing to do merging so many storylines characters and timelines.
I agree with your review. I am currently reading TTSS and it's definitely a very dense novel with a lot of characters to keep track of. It's what one would call "thinking man's spy novel". Still, can't wait to finish it and delve into LeCarre's other works. Thanks for the informative review. Take care.
Frankenstein isn't a Victorian horror novel. First published in 1818, it predates the Victorian era (1837 to 1901).
I know, exactly as I mentioned at the beginning of the video. However, many people refer to the entirety of the 19th century as "Victorian" (wrongly, but that's the way people think about it) and Frankenstein is indeed a classic horror novel, how could I not include it in a video series such as this?
Please do Oliver Twist
I Cant belive you hadn't change much.. even though this channel almost 10 years old. Are you secretly a vampire??
Shhh, don't tell anyone.
@thebookworm6554 😬🤐
Bookworms - what are your thoughts about non-scary horror novels?
This was a really good book.
I've loved her since the deviantart days. I really loved her book What Moves The Dead, her take on the Fall of the House of Usher
Interesting, maybe i'll read that one!
I read The Ruins because of all the RAVE reviews. I just finished it and boy-do I feel betrayed. Thank you for confirming my experience. The characters are too stupid to care about at all. Also-there are NO RUINS! Since when is a single, abandoned mine shaft considered “ruins?!” 🤦♂️
I know, right?!
Good review... although 3 animals die, not 1... a cow and horse and a bird! :) However, why would that trigger someone... surely humans dying is FAR worse!
how is there not a single woman from Terry Pratchett's work? or did I not pay attention enough?
True, true... You're correct, they are awesome!
