"Hybrid Engine Development - HyEnD" is the boundary-pushing student rocketry team of the University of Stuttgart. In April of 2023, we set the European altitude record for student and amateur rockets as well as the world altitude record for hybrid propelled student rockets, achieving an altitude of 64 km with the launch of N2ORTH. Fueled by our shared enthusiasm for rocketry, we are continuously looking to develop exciting new technologies and strive to pass down our knowledge to newer members.

This video was captured with GoPro HERO 8 action cameras in 4K with 60fps located in the avionics section filming sidewards. The rocket features four of these cameras so that a 360° panorama view is possible. Stay tuned for the results of the post flight analysis in the upcoming weeks.

On Tuesday, 18th April 2023 at 11:05 LT, HyEnD successfully launched its N₂ORTH rocket from the European Space and Sounding Rocket Range ESRANGE in Sweden. With an oxidizer mass of 95 kg and a launch elevation of 81°, the rocket reached an altitude of more than 64.4 km after about 2 minutes. What exactly is the propellant made out of if you don't mind me asking?
Is this the ignition for the hybrid engine?
The fuel in this engine was going to be used for a big 15 kNs solid rocket flying to 9 km, however the project has been postponed until further notice as we do not have a launch location.

Very good, about the same altitude that our shipboard Anti Air Terrier missiles did back in the 1960's. Quite good for not a government, and I like seeing cameras and science going up rather than explosives and fragmentation devices.⛽⛽

How did you achieve 200s isp with nitrous? Maximum efficiency we were able to do was 205s. Did you use mixers or swirl injectors?
A lot of testing combined with a good pre- and post chamber design, mixer elements and (in this case) an impingement injector.

That is such a fantastic burn, congratulations! Is there any data or design information that can be shared? Very interested in the injector design.
Thanks! You can actually see the injector in the video - the final design is an open-end swirl injector with seven swirl chambers. We also have a lot more pictures from the rocket / engine assembly on our website (in the technical details & launch campaign section of the N2ORTH rocket page).
@@HybridEngineDevelopment many thanks. I am re-working one of my motor designs at the moment to use a similar injector design, are you able to comment on the discharge coefficient achieved with these types of swirl chambers? I assume with tangential incoming flows. I am assuming a potential drop in discharge coefficient compared with a simple axial flow orifice but I do not have any data as yet.
@@ergausYou can calculate the discharge coefficient of swirl injectors analytically, the process is described in numerous publications. But with N2O you also have to consider two-phase flow phenomena, which makes it much more challenging. In our case, the discharge coefficient was in the range of 0.5-0.6 (with reference to the inlet area), but this depends a lot on the actual design.
Ich weiß gar nicht wie oft ich mir das Video schon angesehen habe ...als Kind und Jugendlicher haben wir ..na ja ..bessere , größere Sylvester-Raketen gebaut und später auch mit guten Erfolg . Aber das da ! ? .....mein großer Respekt vor euch und den Erfolg ....ich könnte auf die Knie gehen ....man war das klasse .....bin immer noch von den Socken !
