Nice video and stills. I am even more keen to get a couple of vintage lenses into service and enjoy using them. Thanks for the inspiration.
@@iainm1256 thank you, definitely go for it, let me know how you get on
Back in the late '70ties, I worked in Denamrk in a tiny shop with photographic equipment. We had a Japanese customer who was a Pentax shooter. He only wanted cameras and lenses from Taiwan, because the Japanese stuff, in his opinion, was not good enough. :)
Very good video, loved both the stills and the video!
@@photographyforenjoyment thanks Alan, glad you enjoyed it 👍
😊❤ beautiful scenery. I want to go to Scotland now. What a great advert Karl!
Certainly worth a visit
❤❤❤
I don't think you have a MC black version certainly not the improved version of it, a so called "red badge". There is also red badge version of the zebra, like there is a non red T version of the silver version. There are also small(early) and big(later, zebra and black sized) silver versions. I even have an early Takumar 50mm Tessar. Ps there is no such thing as an unedited jpg straight from the camera, both the Fuji and the Sony(and every other camera for that matter) are editing powerhouses 😉 You make nice videos though 👍🏻
These are the three versions I have 😊

I like your honest and down to earth approach to reviewing lenses! I got my copy of this wonderful lens a few months ago in a lot of old photography gear. It had a bit of fungus inside the front element but as you say, it’s an easy lens to work on. The focus is a bit stiff but I prefer that to sloppy movement. Produces beautiful images on my old Pentax K110d. I love it so much that I just sold my Pentax M135 f3.5. This Zeiss, for me, is the ultimate vintage 135.
@@paularger2841 thank you, these lenses are good value for money, and as you said easy to work on, I feel unfortunately people right off this lens because of the relatively slow maximum aperture, but they are missing out on a great lens
After seeing your review I picked one of these up (Nikon F mount) on eBay for forty quid. Not sure why but I'm finding it's overexposing on my Nikon D500 and I'm having to set a compensation of -1 to -2. Apart from that it's an excellent lens. I came back to your video and just twigged on the voice, South Wales. 👍🏻
That's great, it's well worth 40 quid, Nikon d500 ,nice camera, yes there's no disguisng the south Wales accent, very nice to hear from you, love the fact that you went and got a version of this lens, thanks for the comment 👍
@@fistfulloflenses No disguising it, and no need to. Aberdare boy here, and proud of it. It's great to hear on RUclips. You, Christopher Frost and "During The Meanwhilst", it's uncanny how many Welsh are on the photography circuit. Could be our fantastic scenery (God's country)?

I have the Minolta MC Rokkor 135mm F2.8 lens, which is maybe the next version of the lens being reviewed. The optics are probably close. I found it to be a good lens, but not great. It is much better stopped down, at least somewhat. It has three things going for it: 1.) Minolta lenses produce unique vintage colors. 2.) It was inexpensive (<$100). So, it is a good choice for people who do not have a lens in that focal range, 3.) It is small and light compared to other 135mm lenses. So it can be comfortably used in 'street' situations. The bottom line is that I consider it to be a good lens for the cost. If you have adapted other Minolta lenses, then it is almost a no-brainer lens to add to your collection.
@@georgesealy4706 couldn't agree more with you, Minolta lenses produce beautiful colours, I've also found the 135 mm focal length useful as a street lens, the version you have is lighter than the older version I've tested here, I've got a few Minolta lenses to test in the future, good to hear from you.
It has a good rating on the Pentax forum.
I was very pleased with the lens ,love the way it renders colours
Interesting video. Nice lens heavy and very well made and usually at low price than the ltm version. Very interesting pictures and light diffusion at full aperture with a pleasant blur and very sharp at f8. Who needs more ? I also like the colors with the Sony sensor. Thx for the video and if you can mix the music a little less Loid it would be perfect. Thx.
Thank you, and Thanks, for watching, totally agree, about the sound, it was a little loud on this one, learning as I go along and always looking to improve , thanks for the feedback
Very interesting lens that I don’t own yet. A small note, the music is a bit distracting when you are talking. A bit to loud. I prefer what you are saying, not the music. Not a big problem, I just had to concentrate a bit more on your English, since I’m not a native English speaker myself. You are a very good photographer as well. ❤❤
Yes I've toned down the music in my more recent videos, im still learning about RUclips
Hello again from Denmark. I own this lens as well, but until this moment I used it exclusively on Canon film cameras. To make the situation perfectly clear, I’m a collector with 70 cameras and a 140 lenses. Most of them film related. So I know very well, what kind of pictures they produce, since I have been shooting film since 1976. The new in this video, is that there is a life in a digital world for the vintage lenses as well, as their more modern contra parts. I have been more slow than you to go down that route, since I only own one adapter , from Canon FD to Fuji X, and no adapters from vintage glass to Nikon D300 or my Canon 5 D mark two. Thank you again for the inspiration. ❤❤
We seem to have a lot in common, I clung to film (black n white and slide film) and still have a darkroom set up that I use from time to time, initially I was adapting Olympus and M42 lenses to my canon 5d mk 1 and 3 then got the xt1 and later the sony
140 lenses awesome 👍
In Canon FD I have lenses from 17 mm to 600 mm and everything in between. In Nikon I own lenses from 20 mm to 500 mm. In Olympus from 18 to 300 Mm. In Leica only 3 screw mount lenses. 50, 90, 135 and a Canon 35 mm LTM. And a couple of Russians 50 mm. But of course then there is the auto focus ones. 😊❤
@@michaelmygind5061 that's quite an extensive collection you have there, I've got more of a disperate collection,(almost one hundred vintage lenses and a few modern lenses)most of which are not very valuable, many I've picked up over the years from car boot sales and eBay, recently I've been trying out Konica hexanon lenses ,I find the history and development of cameras and lenses fascinating.great to hear from you
You are a good videographer and a good story teller. I happens to own the same lens as well as a Fuji XT1, so naturally I feel inspired to go out and use that combo as well. Normally I find the old lenses a bit heavy compared to Fuji’ s own modern lenses, which by the way are both sharper and better color corrected. In my opinion the vintage lenses have a better weight distribution on the vintage bodies; since they are heavier than the Fuji XT line. But of course we can’t deny that creamy ness of the bright aperture and all the golden flair that comes with that. By the way, test some Nikon lenses as well, if those are available to you. Greetings from Denmark. ❤❤
@@michaelmygind5061 thank you very much, it means a lot to me that you're inspired to get out there in the real world , I especially want to try nikon lenses along with Leica , almost won a Nikon in auction last week, but just missed out .cost has held me back so far, but I definitely will be featuring Nikkor glass.
Any particular Nikon lenses you suggest I try out?
Yes. The fast fifties. F.1,2- F. 1;4 or the 105, F. 2;5
@@michaelmygind5061 definitely going on my shortlist, it was the f1.2 that I was outbid on 👍
Excellent comparison video Karl, I think I will have to get myself one! Now, which one to get??
Which ever one you choose,I'm sure you'll capture some great images Alan
Amazing to think that the tessar design goes back so far
Yes it's impressive what they accomplished with basic equipment
Loved the 'bubble' effect. Enhanced the gorgeous colours.😊
Thank you, for old lenses they certainly deliver the goods
the three versions seem comparable in output to me. preference would be for design.i was surprised the colors from all versions are pleasing and saturated.
Pretty much my conclusion, all three have something to recommend them
Nice video ( @1:25 as always ) I have the black version with poor focus but it is impossible to get it fixed where I live!
❤
Behind these beautiful photos, no one cares how many shots the photographer missed. If he was using autofocus at that time, how long did it take for humans to use modern technology to invent autofocus and high pixels, but the photographers worked desperately Resistance wants to go back three hundred years ago
Love the way you convey your thoughts on lenses Karl. I think the images here speak for themselves and do the lens full justice. Very nice indeed.
Thanks Alan, always a pleasure to hear from you, and the feeling is mutual, I very much enjoy your channel, I must take a trip to Liverpool, you've inspired me to check it out, I have been there, but didn't have a camera with me, it's on my to do list

I am a RUclips service provider. I found your channel and saw that you are putting out great content on RUclips but you are not getting enough like comment views and subscribers. As like as other youtubers get . This could be attributed to the lack of SEO and optimization, because your video SEO score is very poor and there are no keywords incorporated in your video and your videos have not been shared on any social media platforms. You need to optimize your channel and do video SEO to reach your target audience. I am a digital marketer. If you want I will give my best work for you. First I am not asking you for money. I bought a nice Helios 44 13 blades on ebay for £57 BIN, seller advertised it as 8 blades. Earlier Biotar and Helios 44 lens coating were not strong but it creates nicer bokeh and neutral look.
@@simonc4764 I've not come across the 13 blade version, I've been told that they are better constructed, seems like you got yourself a bargain there
i like the coatings on the Biotar and early Helios 44. they produce more organic tones
Well done ✅

"Barking to Tooting" 😂. Very good review, again! Keep up the good work 👍
@@photographyforenjoyment thanks Alan 😊
great shots! with regards to camera sensors-yes there is a difference mainly with the mood of the photo and the color intensity. the Sony's always have a lovely green's and more true to life colors. the Canon's like more tan and yellows. and the Fuji's...they create a beautiful ethereal image sometimes.
Thanks for the comment, there are definitely differences between sensors , you've clearly looked closely at the images , I feel each camera has it's merits
@@fistfulloflensesi find it very interesting how some lens models and manufacturers work better on some sensors than others. and yes, lots of looking at images on flickr etc have taught me how different sensors behave.
@@campbells0upswhat is your opinion on the micro four thirds sensors, I've not tried any yet?
@@fistfulloflenses have not tried micro 4/3! i mainly used APS-C until a few years back when i switched to FF. havent really looked back, but there are some wonderful 4/3 systems out there!
I'm a big fan of Konica lenses. I think the 135mm f3.2 is the best out of the three made. Anyway you gave me an idea. I used the extension tube from the 55mm macro kit and my close focusing distance went from 3 meters to .5 meters but lost Infinity focus. Thanks for the idea and bring these great lenses back around for people to consider.
@@christopherleecowan thank you for the encouragement, I was wondering whether these reviews were helpful, your comment have given me the boost I need to keep doing these
one of the best lens that i owned. I used this all the time. Great results when you use this lens in the sunlight with vibrant colorful backgrounds. super Bokeh!
Absolutely agree, love the way the lens renders colours, must be down to the minolta coatings ? I don't think I'll ever part with my copy, looking forward to using this lens more in the future
Another lovely production Karl and I loved the flamingo story 😂. Beautiful photos, keep them coming.
@@raydavies8464 thanks ray, always good to hear from you 😊
Had no idea the company went back that far!😮
Why not get extension tubes for the camera mount eg Sony, then you can use them for any vintage lens for which you have an adaptor?
@@alanboyd2413 very good suggestion, will do 👍
the colors of this lens are outstanding to me. perfect balance of pleasing and punchy
Yes totally agree, love this lens, Minolta lenses handle colour beautifully, they were early adopters of lens coatings and used magnesium fluorite and other ingredients, they seem consistently good in this regard, such a shame they no longer are in the business
the zeiss jena colors are truly legendary-some of the highest rated among vintage lenses. the thorium in the Pancolar 1.8 adds something even extra on top of that. love these images
@@campbells0ups there's a certain quality to Zeiss jena lenses that can be hard to quantify, I'm definitely a fan , thanks for your comments, very much appreciated
the colors of the Pancolar's are deep in vibrancy, as well as high in saturation. the tone is magenta and warm and the character is like a romantacized version of reality. very strong and pleasing.
this is the dream lens, the final 50 that will be added to my collection. i own two of its contemporaries- the Meyer Oreston and the Pancolar f/2. both are two of my all time favorite fifties; i am sure the Pancolar 1.8 will not dissapoint!!
@@campbells0ups haven't tried the oreston yet, hope to soon and not tried the f2 pancolar, that looks like a beautiful lens
@@fistfulloflenses absolutely love both of these, i believe the Pancolar 1.8 will be middle ground between them. also, careful with Exakta-mount versions of f/2 Pancolar, they have a bottom lip on aperture arm that will need modified to adapt.
@@campbells0ups thanks for the tip, I was looking at an exacta adapter just recently
@@fistfulloflenses the modification on the Exatka version is a small filing job. the F2 Pancolar also came in M42 mount but is rare. the Exakta mount are more affordable, but they are tricky to mount and use on my FF Canon's
this lens is very nice and underrated. i own the DS model M42 with rubber ring. the colors are exceptional, cool, deep, paintedley. just keep away from bright lights bc it flares like crazy. besides that the only weakness i see is barrel distortion. the bokeh is also unique-twisted, whispy and silky at the same time. gentle yet energetic
I was surprised , at how nice the lens was, definitely underrated , part of the fun for me is finding these hidden gems that are underappreciated, and undervalued
Cogratulation you have the more sought after thorium version. I think based on the serial number your lens is later than 1965 probably 1967 near the end of production before it switched to the non throrium 6 blades.
Thanks for the extra information, found conflicting information on the web . Thanks for the comment
Very nice video and lovely photos. What adapter do you use with your Fuji? Thanks
@@shy-guy5544 thank you, with that lens I used a fotga ,md- nex it's okay but others I've used feel better made

@@shy-guy5544nice to hear from you, it's the comments I get that make RUclips worth the effort
I've got this exact same lens mounted on a Ricoh camera. The front lens surround is coming loose though (easily wobbles and rattles when gently shaken) by at least 2mm. Would it be more economical to get it repaired or simply buy another? (UK prices are around £50 - £70)
@@sputumtube Hi , my version is in excellent condition, I paid £40 in 2023 from eBay, often go for a little more as you have mentioned, I took a chance as the description was poor and the photos of the lens weren't clear, so I messaged the seller directly, asked if the lens had fungus and if there were any mechanical issues excetra, I often try my own repairs on lenses with various results usually good but not always, personally I've never paid for a repair, but that's partly because i don't know if anyone local , let me know how you get on with the lens, as a side note I've just recently put a roll of film through a Ricoh SLR very nice camera, thank you for the comment
