I picked up a Yashica 50mm f1.9 recently from a charity shop for £15. I was a bit apprehensive at first, not really knowing much about this lens. So I had zero expectations, fitting it to my lumix g3 I took a few test photos and was astonished how sharp and crisp it is wide open, the colours are nicely rendered and the bokeh, very dreamy! 😊 I think we have discovered a hidden gem! I've added your channel, it's always good to connect with other photographers 📸 especially those who appreciate the vintage gear.
I agree, what an underrated lens, it's great when you stumble across a hidden gem, totally agree about connecting with other photographers, its one of the motivating factors for starting this channel, thanks for adding me.
Got one for 5$ today from a local thrift
Real bargain, enjoy
I wish I could avoid watching your videos Karl, every single one makes me want to go out and buy a lens!
There's certainly a lot to choose from, with so many unique and interesting optics out there it can be quite addictive
Rather like Conrad4094 I always used to have one with my MX outfit back in the day Karl, such a compact lens was ideal on that equally compact body. Nice work 👍
@@photographyforenjoyment thanks Alan, it's always a pleasure to hear from you, do you ever get chance to shoot any film nowadays?
@@photographyforenjoyment the MX is a super little camera. Did you ever use it with the 40/2.8 lens ? That makes it so compact that it fits in a little old leather bag that I normally carry a small Japanese rangefinder in . I must admit I do usually prefer to take a 28, 50 and 135 combination for a “small “ load but I will sometimes swap out the 50 for the 40-80 f2.8 zoom which is a very compact short zoom lens
@@fistfulloflenses The chance yes, the time yes, the desire yes. I think it will probably be into the new year by the time I do something about it though!
@@conrad4094 I shoot so little film these days, something I had better change in 2025. Back in the 70s/80s it was still primes that outperformed most zooms and like you, I packed 28/50/135mm with every outfit I used, be it Pentax/Minolta/Canon or Nikon. The little 40mm passed me by though!
@photographyforenjoyment same here, when I started I was told to avoid zoom lenses, and most photographers I knew had a 28mm 50mm and 135 mm in their camera bags
tyvm for the video. 28mm is a struggle for me so it's nice to see images from someone who knows how to use it.
Thank you for the encouragement, very much appreciated
One of these comes with me in my bag any time I take my go-to film SLR, my Pentax MX out . I’m very satisfied with that lens.
I'm hoping to do more film photography in the coming few months, I've got a few rolls of Ilford fp4 at the moment, what film would you suggest ? ( I do my own developing)
@ well since you’re developing it yourself and already have some black and white film , for simplicity I won’t suggest any colour film. A personal favourite of mine is Rollei Retro 400S which is an interesting film with which you can do infrared photos , using a suitable filter. However I like it for having a very pronounced character with strong contrast and definitely a more retro feel . The 400 iso speed should help with some extra leeway for light this time of year . Or if you’re fond of the Ilford stuff then Delta 400 for this time of year
@conrad4094 thanks for the tip Conrad , ive never tried the Rollei film and infrared is something I'm interested in trying, I have used the delta film a few years back but i wasn't impressed with the results maybe I should give it another chance.
@ there’s a rollei Retro 80s and a Rollei Superpan 200 also . I believe all are based on some old Agfa-Gevaert Super panchromatic film, hence the infrared thing.. there is a dedicated Rollei Infrared film too though. I have to admit I shoot a lot more colour film than black and white though
@conrad4094 Thanks for all the info, I'm looking to try a few films and then pick one to buy in bulk and use with a bulk film loader to try and keep costs down.
it's a good start!😉😬
Thanks for another informative video. The vintage lenses are really interesting.
Thank you for the positive feedback, it's a pleasure to talk all things photography
This is a wonderful lens and I agree with your conclusions. I usually reach for this lens when I head out. Have you tried the 55mm f1. 4 version ?
@@michaelherskovitz4203 unfortunately I've never tried the 55 mm F1.4 version, I not yet come across one , have you used one,? if so I would be interested to get your opinion .
Interesting cases for the lenses - did you craft them yourself or are they regular retail items. I’ve also gone down the rabbit hole !!
They are just regular aluminium camera cases that I've put pick and pluck foam in, I was trying to organise my collection, it also makes it easier to transport the lenses, you two down the rabbit hole 😊 what lenses have you got, any personal favourites ?
I got this lens a few weeks ago because I wasn't perfectly happy with a Chinon 135 mm f2.8 I had purchased earlier. I think the Takumar performs better, the bokeh is creamier and it's slightly sharper than the Chinon. Just paid 25€ for it so a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. BTW, a little off topic: how's the Sony with vintage Pentax lenses? Are the focal lengths as specified or does using an adapter change that? Can you control aperture or are you stuck with shooting wide open?
@@astral_brain 25 is a steal, I'm surprised that the lens is not better regarded it has nice bokeh its sharp and i love Pentax colours, that's interesting about the chinon lens (I was looking to buy one ) the Sony works well with vintage lenses, there's no change to the focal length when using the adapter on the Sony , all the Pentax I have at the moment are vintage manual focus and manual aperture, so there's no problem with controlling the aperture. do you have many Pentax lenses?
@@fistfulloflenses Yes I have lots of lenses because I've been shooting on Pentax since the analog days in the 90's. After a long break from the SLR world I have recently purchased a Pentax K-5 APS-C DSLR that I can use my old lenses on but I would prefer a full-frame sensor. The Pentax K-1 full-frame camera is a good piece of kit but also bulky and expensive so I'm looking at what other options are out there that would take my Pentax lenses. I love the Chinon which is a real bokeh-monster but it doesn't really offer any advantages over the Takumar IMO. On the other hand, considering the cheap prices they can be had for, you could get one just to satisfy you curiosity and to have a different flavour of the same.
@@astral_brain The Pentax k-1 looks like a great camera, I briefly considered getting one, but I like the idea of trying lenses from different manufacturers, as a cheaper option I bought a cheap adapter and modified it to use Pentax lenses on a full frame canon DSLR, it works ok , but you have to rotate the lens so the markings are in the wrong position, also canon DSLR camera (I have the 5d mk 3) are not the easiest to manually focus with, I did consider fitting a different focus screen to the canon, after doing this for a while, I came to the conclusion begrudgingly that mirroless was the answer, something I resisted because of the cost , for full frame when I was buying the best option with my budget was the Sony A7 series
@@fistfulloflenses The A7 seems like a good option and I will put it on my list of candidates for a future full-frame upgrade. 👌
Beautiful pictures and honest review. I wish you could have added some closeup portraits. Do you recommend this lense on nikon dslr?
Thank you, portraits would have been great, maybe in a future more extensive review, as for Nikon DSLR unfortunately because of the flange distance, you probably won't get infinity focus , unless you do some modification to the lens
did you or would you consider the older version for the sake of an improved mfd or does the latter version have better coatings or maybe it just doesn't matter. thanks!
Good question, well when I saw it for sale,(at a good price) I just went for it, after it arrived I did the research and worked out which version it was ( it wasn't clear which version I was getting from the photos in the listing) after researching the lens, it didn't seem like they made much if any change optically between this and the first version , Konica made the lens a little lighter and changed the close focus from 45 cm to 55cm , coatings as far as I could tell from reading up on the lens stayed consistent, unfortunately when im researching these lenses sometimes you get conflicting reports, so if im not sure I don't include it, apparently I have read somewhere that this lens was used by the Japanese military as the benchmark to compare other lenses to ,but i couldn't confirm if that was 100 percent true
My experience with vintage lenses led me to belive there are no "magical" properties to particular models, it's really more down to the sample variation than anything. The recent video on David Hancock channel where he did a huge test of 50mm 1.4 lenses kinda confirms my observation. Some of the lenses he tested were very early models and performed greatly, like silver nose zuiko 50 1.4 which was single coated at a time.
@@bwellington3001 I also watch Hancock, as Zenography is not quite my flavor even though he still provides interesting info. What other channels do you recommend for vintage glass?
@@seoulrydr another one would be Marco Aries
@@bwellington3001 i'm a sub there, too. i'm fairly certain you're aware of 'simon's utak' and 'red_code'.
Another amazing must watch ❤
Thank you Sarah, great to hear from you, glad you're enjoying the channel
It's not a bad lens and not an expensive one at that. I really like the blue flare it can produce when the sun hits it just right. Thank you for your videos it motivates me to go play around with the different lenses I have in my kit.
Thank you, its good to know that you are enjoying the videos, I do wonder how they are being received, hopefully they encourage people to get out there in the real world?
Very good video and the lens seems quite 'punchy' Karl. As a brand it was one that a lot of retailers steered away from, partly because of their UK distributors and also having their own lens mount that was never very well supported. Such a shame for such an important manufacturer.
Thank you Alan, that's interesting about retailers steering away from the brand, I know when I first became interested in photography in the late 1980s I was totally unaware of the konica brand, in the camera club I joined the big three where Nikon canon and Minolta, with Pentax struggling to keep up with the advent of autofocus
Now that is what I call a proper collection..! WOW, super impressed (but curious about the Componon enlarging lens?)
The componon lens is from my enlarger ,I've adapted it to my Leica film camera , not tried it yet with Sony though, haven't had the time😊
I've got the enlarger lens to work by adding a focusing helicoid to it , it's a bit awkward to use but works okay
Nice video and stills. I am even more keen to get a couple of vintage lenses into service and enjoy using them. Thanks for the inspiration.
@@iainm1256 thank you, definitely go for it, let me know how you get on
Back in the late '70ties, I worked in Denamrk in a tiny shop with photographic equipment. We had a Japanese customer who was a Pentax shooter. He only wanted cameras and lenses from Taiwan, because the Japanese stuff, in his opinion, was not good enough. :)
Very good video, loved both the stills and the video!
@@photographyforenjoyment thanks Alan, glad you enjoyed it 👍
😊❤ beautiful scenery. I want to go to Scotland now. What a great advert Karl!
Certainly worth a visit

I don't think you have a MC black version certainly not the improved version of it, a so called "red badge". There is also red badge version of the zebra, like there is a non red T version of the silver version. There are also small(early) and big(later, zebra and black sized) silver versions. I even have an early Takumar 50mm Tessar. Ps there is no such thing as an unedited jpg straight from the camera, both the Fuji and the Sony(and every other camera for that matter) are editing powerhouses 😉 You make nice videos though 👍🏻
These are the three versions I have 😊
Da iawn, caru eich sianel! 😀

I like your honest and down to earth approach to reviewing lenses! I got my copy of this wonderful lens a few months ago in a lot of old photography gear. It had a bit of fungus inside the front element but as you say, it’s an easy lens to work on. The focus is a bit stiff but I prefer that to sloppy movement. Produces beautiful images on my old Pentax K110d. I love it so much that I just sold my Pentax M135 f3.5. This Zeiss, for me, is the ultimate vintage 135.
@@paularger2841 thank you, these lenses are good value for money, and as you said easy to work on, I feel unfortunately people right off this lens because of the relatively slow maximum aperture, but they are missing out on a great lens
After seeing your review I picked one of these up (Nikon F mount) on eBay for forty quid. Not sure why but I'm finding it's overexposing on my Nikon D500 and I'm having to set a compensation of -1 to -2. Apart from that it's an excellent lens. I came back to your video and just twigged on the voice, South Wales. 👍🏻
That's great, it's well worth 40 quid, Nikon d500 ,nice camera, yes there's no disguisng the south Wales accent, very nice to hear from you, love the fact that you went and got a version of this lens, thanks for the comment 👍

I have the Minolta MC Rokkor 135mm F2.8 lens, which is maybe the next version of the lens being reviewed. The optics are probably close. I found it to be a good lens, but not great. It is much better stopped down, at least somewhat. It has three things going for it: 1.) Minolta lenses produce unique vintage colors. 2.) It was inexpensive (<$100). So, it is a good choice for people who do not have a lens in that focal range, 3.) It is small and light compared to other 135mm lenses. So it can be comfortably used in 'street' situations. The bottom line is that I consider it to be a good lens for the cost. If you have adapted other Minolta lenses, then it is almost a no-brainer lens to add to your collection.
@@georgesealy4706 couldn't agree more with you, Minolta lenses produce beautiful colours, I've also found the 135 mm focal length useful as a street lens, the version you have is lighter than the older version I've tested here, I've got a few Minolta lenses to test in the future, good to hear from you.
I could not believe how sharp my Celtic Minolta was, and I paid 30 bucks. I probably stopped it down to f 4 for that two year old test, but I keep my Fuji camera settings at 0 and I was getting crazy sharp stuff. When you get this performance at that price, it becomes a favorite.
@@georgesealy4706 great, thanks for the extra information, you clearly know your stuff
@@sclogse1you got yourself a bargain, Minolta produced some great optics over the years, love Minolta lenses I have, and always on the lookout for more,my first proper camera was a Minolta x700 wish I hadn't sold it .
It has a good rating on the Pentax forum.
I was very pleased with the lens ,love the way it renders colours
Interesting video. Nice lens heavy and very well made and usually at low price than the ltm version. Very interesting pictures and light diffusion at full aperture with a pleasant blur and very sharp at f8. Who needs more ? I also like the colors with the Sony sensor. Thx for the video and if you can mix the music a little less Loid it would be perfect. Thx.
Thank you, and Thanks, for watching, totally agree, about the sound, it was a little loud on this one, learning as I go along and always looking to improve , thanks for the feedback
Very interesting lens that I don’t own yet. A small note, the music is a bit distracting when you are talking. A bit to loud. I prefer what you are saying, not the music. Not a big problem, I just had to concentrate a bit more on your English, since I’m not a native English speaker myself. You are a very good photographer as well. ❤❤
Yes I've toned down the music in my more recent videos, im still learning about RUclips
Hello again from Denmark. I own this lens as well, but until this moment I used it exclusively on Canon film cameras. To make the situation perfectly clear, I’m a collector with 70 cameras and a 140 lenses. Most of them film related. So I know very well, what kind of pictures they produce, since I have been shooting film since 1976. The new in this video, is that there is a life in a digital world for the vintage lenses as well, as their more modern contra parts. I have been more slow than you to go down that route, since I only own one adapter , from Canon FD to Fuji X, and no adapters from vintage glass to Nikon D300 or my Canon 5 D mark two. Thank you again for the inspiration. ❤❤
We seem to have a lot in common, I clung to film (black n white and slide film) and still have a darkroom set up that I use from time to time, initially I was adapting Olympus and M42 lenses to my canon 5d mk 1 and 3 then got the xt1 and later the sony
140 lenses awesome 👍
In Canon FD I have lenses from 17 mm to 600 mm and everything in between. In Nikon I own lenses from 20 mm to 500 mm. In Olympus from 18 to 300 Mm. In Leica only 3 screw mount lenses. 50, 90, 135 and a Canon 35 mm LTM. And a couple of Russians 50 mm. But of course then there is the auto focus ones. 😊❤
@@michaelmygind5061 that's quite an extensive collection you have there, I've got more of a disperate collection,(almost one hundred vintage lenses and a few modern lenses)most of which are not very valuable, many I've picked up over the years from car boot sales and eBay, recently I've been trying out Konica hexanon lenses ,I find the history and development of cameras and lenses fascinating.great to hear from you
You are a good videographer and a good story teller. I happens to own the same lens as well as a Fuji XT1, so naturally I feel inspired to go out and use that combo as well. Normally I find the old lenses a bit heavy compared to Fuji’ s own modern lenses, which by the way are both sharper and better color corrected. In my opinion the vintage lenses have a better weight distribution on the vintage bodies; since they are heavier than the Fuji XT line. But of course we can’t deny that creamy ness of the bright aperture and all the golden flair that comes with that. By the way, test some Nikon lenses as well, if those are available to you. Greetings from Denmark. ❤❤
@@michaelmygind5061 thank you very much, it means a lot to me that you're inspired to get out there in the real world , I especially want to try nikon lenses along with Leica , almost won a Nikon in auction last week, but just missed out .cost has held me back so far, but I definitely will be featuring Nikkor glass.

Nice video ( @1:25 as always ) I have the black version with poor focus but it is impossible to get it fixed where I live!

Behind these beautiful photos, no one cares how many shots the photographer missed. If he was using autofocus at that time, how long did it take for humans to use modern technology to invent autofocus and high pixels, but the photographers worked desperately Resistance wants to go back three hundred years ago
Modern technology is great, but the drive to create art is timeless, thank you for your kind comment
