    Don't underestimate the environmental impact of having to buy dozens of bags of organic material every year. That's a real downside of gardening in raised beds.

    • @danibaie
      @danibaie Месяц назад

      Also consider buying topsoil and other soil additives instead of just compost, you can add a layer of compost to your beds, but you don't need to grow in compost. Also consider removing the wood, cause the beds aren't deep enough and the wood decomposition might not play well with your plants root systems. ❤ I'm sorry about the wall of text. A lot of the large youtube gardeners are in the business of selling, so they don't allow recommend practices that are in our best interests.

    • @easygrowinggarden
      @easygrowinggarden Месяц назад

      @@danibaie I hadn't thought about the environmental impact of buying compost. I figure since our compost is mainly recycled yard waste from our local municipality...that was a good thing (besides the plastic bag)?! I didn't consider removing the logs but did play with the idea adding additional height to the raised beds! I appreciated all the info...the more the better.

    • @danibaie
      @danibaie Месяц назад

      @@easygrowinggarden Yeah it's good that the compost is locally sourced, but I meant that having to buy so much compost yearly isn't economically or environmentally sustainable - coincidentally those often go hand in hand 😂. After the filling the beds, it sucks to have to keep refilling them. I forgot to mention that a possible reason the soil level decreases is that the compost isn't fully decomposed when applied, so it continues to break down within the beds. Im done now lol but I have to recommend the Blossom and Branch Farm RUclips channel as a good source on gardening, especially on soil health. She's really helped me see through a lot of the consumerism in the gardening scene. p.s. I love your garden and it's great that you can share that with your family. Cheers 💛

    Plant Iris in that bed. It's very poisonous to wildlife, so nothing usually eats it. Also, bulbs like hyacinth, daffodils and allium are very disease and pest resistant. They are careful! I like gladiolas for late summer and nothing eats those. Catmint and russian sage is a sure bet too.

    I have wasted so much time, effort, and money planting things that are eaten by deer and/or rabbits. The deterrent sprays work, but can be super expensive. So, I made a decision....unless the plant tag says pest, disease, deer and rabbit resistant, it can stay at the nursery. I recently fell in love with Heuchera/Heucherella and bought several colors. Something has eaten all of them. I will be removing and replacing. Just a note for your consideration. Large shrubs can be transplanted. It's not an easy job, but if done corrrectly the plants can survive. Also, azaleas and hydrangeas are deer favorites. Try spirea, peony, buddleia, diervilla, or boxwood instead.

      That's a good call on your part! I too try to buy plants that are deer resistant but sometimes I get excited about the plant and forget to check, and that's what happen with these azaleas😫. Hopefully since it's tucked back more the deer will leave it alone🤞.Seems to work for my hydrangeas! I have moved large shrubs before...so much work so it's a last resort for me! Thanks for the nice video. Maybe plant the sweet pea seeds directly in the ground after the ground thaws a bit even if they bloom a little later. Much easier. I’m not sure where you are located but I’m in Minnesota and decided to outside winter sow in jugs and water bottles this year plus start more seeds directly in the ground and pots to save me work of starting seeds in the house, hardening them off and then transplanting. I am also going to direct sow my tomatoes and peppers this year in their pots with a water/juice bottle or jug over them like a mini greenhouse and see how quickly they grow in full sun outside. I realize I may have harvests and blooms later but it can also extend the season in late summer when some flowers started earlier are dwindling down. Hope everything does well for you and looking forward to updates.

    Scabiosa is a cool flower. They like to sprout in colder conditions. I winter sow mine in plastic bottles. They can survive some frost if well established. The one plant in the greenhouse survived but the one outside got hit pretty hard with minus 13 C. So far is not showing signs of new shoots. My guess is that it can survive maybe up to minus ten as my greenhouse is small and not heated. They kept blooming up to that very hard frost despite being hit myltiple times by minus temperatures. They seem to like cold and humid weather kinda like the one we have in UK.

    With the Aster, moist cold stratify 4-6 weeks on a damp paper towel inside a plastic sandwich bag inside the refrigerator before sowing in soil. The lemon basil makes delicious tea. I am not a basil fan. Nor am I a lemon fan. So, I grow lime basil for tea. It is absolutely delicious! The Orange Wonder Snapdragon looks beautiful. Share all those pumpkins with the neighborhood kids-or your oldest child's classmates. We share with our elderly neighbors and co-workers.

      Thanks for the Aster tip...will definitely be trying it! I've never had basil tea but I'll try it this year. Lemon basil ice tea sounds refreshing! I used all my pumpkins for decoration and the neighborhood kids harvested some themselves. They thought it was so cool growing in the backyard.😀
