Creatures of Paamul Bay
Мексика
Добавлен 23 окт 2023
Some Thursday bay critters
A very old stingray is the first subject for the camera lens. The first thing you notice is its weathered top skin and the poor thing appeared nearly blind. Then a couple puffer fish, some reef fish and finally a barracuda.

Sand diver
Просмотров 5414 дней назад
This short video shows the weird, bottom-resting fish called a "sand diver," part of the lizardfish family and common to these waters. Sometimes they bury themselves in the sand up to their heads and sometimes they will sit on top of coral heads. (I've only seen them on the sand, as in the video.) Regardless, they are "ambush predators," remaining still until an unwary little fish or even squid...
Marcelo's Turtles

This is a compilation of Marcelo's videos of sea turtles from the last two weeks. Watch til the end because that last video might be the closest video of a turtle I've ever seen - you can see its right eye moving up close!
Lise and shark

I wanted to take you on a quick little dive to peek at a sleeping nurse shark. It was under a rock ledge out past our reef. Lise is in the background on the surface (she probably found it before me). :-)
Marcelo's Morays

Combine Marcelo's massive amount of experience SCUBA diving (having made roughly 10,000 dives) and leading SCUBA dives for thirty years - along with his smooth technique, makes him a natural underwater videographer. He's certainly one of the best I've seen, if not the best. Joe Vinson has been nice enough to provide a camera for Marcelo and has been editing and uploading some of Marcelo's video...
Tuesday, 07 JAN 25 Dive w Crista
Просмотров 12228 дней назад
Dove SCUBA with Crista Sykes, daughter of our good friends Bill & Susy. Right off the bat on initial descent saw a big puffer fish ("Porcupine fish"), followed by a small spotted moray. Then on to a Squirrel fish (big, dark round eyes and yellow spiked dorsal fin), and finally a big old Loggerhead turtle. The only way any of us could have seen the ancient turtle is thanks to the amazing efforts...
Fast Flounders

Two flounders, both small but the second one is very small but moves like lightening! The little one was almost transparent - you can just see its outline from above. Once it saw me approaching, it shot forward and got under the sand in a blink of an eye.
Green Moray by reef

This moray staked out his temporary lodging on this shallow coral head near the Paamul reef.
Afternoon Eagle Ray
Просмотров 75Месяц назад
A couple days ago - about 5 pm - saw this large Eagle ray by the reef. The water was very stirred up, very cloudy, so I knew I'd have to get close to get a worthy shot. What an effort to get close! The words "graceful" or "swift" or "nimble" could never be associated with humans under water, lol, but the Eagle ray is all those and more.
Into the Mouth of a Spotted Moray
Просмотров 330Месяц назад
This was from a SCUBA dive off Paamul a few years ago. (The camera was on a stick - my hand wasn't holding the camera directly.) Like many moray eels, this one saw his own reflection in the camera lens and was very curious, 'kissing' and then attempting to either bite or get to know the intruder! It finally gives one last 'kiss' and goes into its house.
Dualing bubbles

Did another 'ascending bubbles' video after sitting on the bottom and not seeing much. This one had two good 'dualing' bubbles.
Brave Pulpo
Просмотров 335Месяц назад
This brave pulpo (Spanish for octopus) allowed me to stay close for quite awhile. I say, "brave," because usually these creatures stay hidden during daylight hours. This pulpo was in water about two feet deep, right next to the shore by the old boat ramp. It changed colors a few times to match the rocks it was on.
Xmas Bubbles

Got an early Xmas day start - in the water before sunrise but didn't see squat. Thought I'd video bubbles on the way back up :-) Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone!
Nudibranch in Oahu 2024
Просмотров 199 месяцев назад
Lise and I encountered this little orange nudibranch while entering the water in Waimanalo (small town in Oahu). Turned out to be the most interesting thing we saw - and in only about 12" inches of water! Nudibranchs are sea slugs that can morph into fascinating shapes and change colors, similar to cuttlefish and octopuses, although nudibranchs are much simpler creatures. In fact their eyes can...
Rocking 'n Rolling South Wind Trip
Просмотров 8410 месяцев назад
Here's a rockin 'n rollin south wind snorkel trip, from arrival to about 17' deep to return to calmer close-in bay waters. I tried to show the action on the bottom and surface. The stronger the wind, the deeper you'd have to go for calm water. Even 25 or 30 feet deep would be surging in strong wind. It's easier to swim back on the bottom, taking care not to surprise a stingray and get a stinger...

Stingray, lotsa fish, Eagle ray, and barracudas
Amazing.
Pulpos are the best
This is very cool. Marcelo and I fished together a lot in David's little panga. Good fun....his English sketchy and so was my Spanish, but we didn't let that get in the way of our fun. Who is doing this editing, in addition to Joe?
Awesome
I liked the video very much, thanks you for sharing, stay safe, stay blessed
❤
Wow, that’s a big stingray!
