Whispering Trout, What is Fish Whispering?
Просмотров 12414 дней назад
Fish Whispering is an old school way of gently caring for, and then releasing trout safely and harmlessly. Done improperly, you can hurt trout by grabbing it to tightly, holding a twisting trout against you, and holding trout in the air too long to take pictures and videos. Whispering trout is a way to gently release trout unharmed back into the river.
Reading Water in Small Rivers Vol 1

    I have been drop shot nymphing a lot this year & caught loads of fish.Last night I was missing a few fish I think i shouldn't have though.This seems to happen more when slightly windy.I have a couple of questions for you.Do you always run your rig slightly overweight rather than underweight. Do you always want to feel that bottom all the way through the drift when leading.As opposed to euronymphing where often you slightly underweight & see the takes more on your sighter.I am thinking with drop shot.It's best to overweight keep tight & relying on feeling most takes.Would you say this is the best approach with drop shot nymphing. Cheers

      Absolutely. I often get the question, " How much lead should I use". Well, there is no answer to this question. As you might guess, every river and saturation are different. However, I will answer question bay stating, it is always better to error on too much lead than not enough. Not enough lead means your flies are not in the target zone of the trout and you will not catch any trout. Error on too much lead and you will still catch trout, except now you run the risk of hanging your lead up on the bottom. I like to feel my lead tapping on the bottom. This is kind of mis-leading because on gravel bottoms you will often not feel your weight on the bottom. For me it is a feel, and you will acquire this feel in time. I just finished my latest book, Drop Shot Nymphing, A Definitive Guide. This will be out around fall. Here I have devoted a whole chapter on "Weight Management" where I go into this issue in more depth. As far as Euro style nymphing goes, it is difficult, or in some cases impossible to add weight in order to keep your nymphs in the target zone. In DS it is extremely easy to maintain proper weight management as an adjustment to the changing river bottom. I do have on my channel, topical videos on these issues and more on DS. Thanks for the well thought out comment.

    It seems to me if you do something long enough similar solutions will present themselves to you! I use a quite similar Fanny pack which I added a wide nylon strap to lengthen the original one so I can carry it diagonally over my shoulder across my body on my back. I spin it around to the front to access it and return it to keep it out of my way! I carry a folding knife clipped in a in an open sheath on my pants belt on a lanyard thru a pants belt loop so I can’t loose it but still easily use it. My flys are generalist patterns that can resemble many trout foods. My net is also carried in a narrow bag with a wide strap in the same way. I like a telescopic net to extend my range. The bag keeps the net from getting tangled in bushes as I walk thru narrow wooded trails etc. I also have my flys in pill bottles to organize them! My dropper flys are tied on short stiff mono loops and stuck in foam which once was inside an old life jacket. They are kept in a zip lock bag so if one falls out of the foam it is still easy to find and won’t get lost opening and closing my pouch! A pair of fishing haemostats/ cutters and a bug net for my hat ( in a zip lock) are also useful items in my kit, Etc. Good videos on your Chanel! Thanks!

I cut off the flys and remove the leader, saving it for later, add my poly leader with a loop to loop to my floating fly line, add the flys and ready to go! Not that different from your method which will work just as well! Great minds think alike or so I’ve been told! 👍👍😊😊

    I almost always fish a steamer type fly on the point such as a Muddler or baitfish imitation and a smaller wet fly such as a Hares ear soft hackle etc. on a short stiffer mono looped tag (4-5” long) attached above a knot with the loop, on a self constructed tapered leader with a 6-8 lb test Florocarbon tippet about 24 “ long. I use perfection loops to connect the tippet to the leader for easy replacement. Sometimes I hook two trout on one cast …. My theory is the trout sees the “minnow” chasing the wet fly and its territorial predatory instincts kick in! Only land both perhaps 50% of the time!! But some fun nonetheless! Tight lines!

    Great video, I’m excited to try this method. One thing I’m puzzled about is what knot do you use to tie your 3dr fly directly to the leader? In the video you just tie an overhand knot, and it’s unlikely that would hold a fish… thanks!

    • @northwestschoolofflyfishin1543
      @northwestschoolofflyfishin1543 2 месяца назад

      It's called an in-line nymph, meaning the nymph is tied directly to the leader. I rarely do this anymore because once you tie it on you can't take it off. Any knot will do the job and you are right, if there is a weak point on the leader it is this knot.

  • @mikelundrigan2285
    @mikelundrigan2285 2 месяца назад

    The main reason I do not have spools of tippet on a lanyard is because the tippet would be exposed to uv rays when outside and the tippet will be weakened over time! Instead, I make my own leaders at home and carry 1/2 dozen with extra spools of various tippet that I may need but inside zippered pockets of a sling pack I carry over my shoulders on my back with my flys etc. My knife is on a strong looped string, looped thru a belt loop, in a knife case on the belt. The knife is accessible to use but cannot be lost because it is tied on my jeans…..lost a couple before I devised this method…case opened after getting snagged and knife fell out!! I tie everything on my pack with zingers or strong line so it is accessible but cannot be lost, such as haemostats! Even the zingers are further secured! Going thru the bush, there are many ways your stuff can snag on branches etc. and you may not even know it is gone until you need it later!

Often wondered why few suggest using a light limber spinning rod to drop shot fly fish with a bobber (indicator) to adjust depth! Weight on the end of the line with the flys above it at different heights similar to what you present here!! That’s how many fish earth worms! Why not add flys above a weight with a small bobber?? Easy to cast where you want, no back cast to snag bushes etc.? Think it could be just as fish catching as with a fly rod!! Can’t see any reason it shouldn’t work!!

There is one Malad River that forms in Gooding where the Big Wood and Little Wood rivers confluence together and that river empties into the Snake River at Hagerman. The other Malad River starts south of Pocatello near the town of Malad. That river forms from a spring/pond and flows south to Utah. Is this correct? I got confused when looking for this river.

The river is listed as MaladB, the B for Bliss. You will not get accurate flows from USGS. I fish the river just above the Snake River. You will be able to find it on Google Maps or Trout Routes. There are no rules in Drop Shot nymphing. I'm in the process of writing another book, Drop Shot Nymphing, where I am continually saying this throughout the book. However, the reason I use 6lb fluoro on all of my 8, 10, and 12 pound leaders is, If the flies get caught on the bottom I want the flies to break off and not the whole leader. It's much easier to tie on a fly than change a leader. 6lb fluoro is a great combination of strength and free flowing movement which we want our nymph to do. I hope this helps.

      Hi Jerome, When I say sinking line, I don't mean a mono or Fluro type line. A full sinking FLY LINE, say a 6wt, you will see on the box being labeled WF6FS The S for Sinking. The WF for weight forward. Type 1,2 3, or 6 would be how many inches per second. Type 3 would be 3 inches per second. Stone Creek has a website so you can order it online from them. You never know what Walmart may have in stock so try Walmart online.

      I’m blind without my glasses. XL cocoon slate grey polarized Aviators is what I wear. I like them and due a new pair. I’ll use the old pair as a back up.

    You mentioned briefly that you want your flies moving slightly faster than the current. Do you feel that way for just drop shot nymphing or do you feel that way for all styles of nymphing?

      All styles. Moving the nymph at the same speed or slightly faster than the current. The rod and rod tip are constantly moving. All this to maintain a straight line connection from the nymph to your hand.

      I was raised fly fishing the Kern River as a boy. The Sierra’s was my playground. I too am 67 years young. I’ve written a couple of books where l mention my experiences FF the Kern River back then. Thank you for your kind comments. I’ve written a monthly newsletter since 2017 where my writing has taken a more philosophical and beauty approach to fly fishing. I write and teach about the core principles of FF passed down by old mentors who are now dead. These concepts are widely practiced by exceptional and master fly fishermen but not mentioned much on RUclips. Tight lines to you.
