“Moving away from pink” and all the flesh colored conversation was very revealing. As a Black dance mom and a director and designer of costumers, the pull to go back to “traditional” which for dancers of color reads as white centered is real. It is felt in selection, representation and professional opportunities. Pink tights being deemed as clean infers that the skin tones which aren’t pink are unclean which is very deeply imbedded racist trope that has seeped into the general psyche and normalized. Sad. But it’s a reality that keeps this beautiful art form out of reach for so many because of the heavy navigating that must be undertaken in an already challenging field. Great interview! I love hearing the costume stories. It’s so fascinating and critical to the theatrical lexicon from which we all depend and enjoy.
