The Gipton War Room 28mm WW2 wargaming Bolt Action rules Battle Report No.1
Beautiful scratch-built structures, DVY! Thanks for posting this battle report! Have seen the benefits worked into Bolt Action ver.3.
Was it part of the scenario for the units to have different valued points? Beautiful table and the layout was grand. I was hoping for more of the board being used, it seemed as though it could have been played on a 4x6 just as easily. I do love the concept of an 8x5 table, I think a higher points value would be required. Thank you.
Great videos, love the thematic batreps 👍
Another great game, marvellous table and minis. Your narration of the game is very thematic and really adds to the interest.
Hold until relieved! I enjoyed your preso.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it 👍
forces remind me of Arnhem with the armored recon elements of the 9th SS Pz trying to push the 1st airborne's elements that managed to get into the city
Thank you and in the future I plan to do an Arnhem themed game. Back in the 90’s along with some wargaming mates we put on a large 20mm Arnhem game using ‘Rapid Fire’ rules and unit organisation at a wargaming show in Leeds including a 6’ bridge 👍 Sadly all gone now 😢
Very good game, the table, figures and vehicles are all stunning. I have enjoyed every game of yours i have watched.
Thank you very much its appreciated, just wish I didn’t make so many rules mistakes 😂
50:15 are you firing both autocannon and mmg, on that howitzer i thought you can only use one if its turret based?? Im quite new to game but seeing few things that im confused
Don’t be confused Andy, it’s probably just another mistake I made with the rules. When videoing battle reports I’m afraid my concentration is on ‘lights camera action’ stuff and sometimes, make that a lot of times, I forget some of the rules 😂 I make the videos for fun and to highlight terrain and figures, hopefully giving others some ideas etc.
Another excellent game. Of course, your standard excellently painted figures and beautiful terrain. Thanks for the game.
Cheers Michael glad you liked it and thank you 👍
You know, I was really disturbed to learn that in the actual WW2, they used real people. Quite a disturbing historical fact.
What your listing as an "Artillery platoon" is an armored platoon and as the 251/10 is in the transport section it can't be purchased as the command vehicle in your armored platoon...you could add it to the rifle platoon as a transport, but you would have to pay an extra 10pts to upgrade the AA vehicle or the stummel to the platoon command vehicle also you can't have 2 armored platoons with only one rifle platoon..so the simple answer is to combine both armored platoons into one with the 234/1 as your commander. Also, because the 251/10 is a transport it would have had to make a leadership check at the end of turn 3 because it was closer to an enemy (the piat) then any friendlies Infantry run 12" not 9" and they can't run in rough ground (germans that snapped and ran out of trees turn 4 at 33:37) The german AT gun shooting at infantry at 34:30 would hit on 4+, not 3+, the +1 to hit for AT guns only applies against vehicle targets Constant mistake througout the entire video....point blank is +2 to hit, not +1 At 44:34 your hanomag is carrying 13 men (3 man command + 10 man squad) it's capacity is only 12...at this point you've made so many mistakes that the whole outcome is meaningless...
Thanks Thomas glad you enjoyed it 👍
Im quite new at this game and only played once noticed some of those things but wasnt really sure about it. Whatabout 50:15 armoured car firing at howitzer, i though you cant fire mmg coaxial and main gun both? Thats how we played our first game
Beautifully painted figures and vehicles. The table is also topnotch.
Thank you its appreciated
Very enjoyable battle report. Beautiful terrain and minis - excellent narration. Thank you - looking forward to more!
Thank you and glad you liked it 👍
Very nice battle report, with good dynamics. Really catches the character of a Bolt Action game, imho. And of course beautiful terrain and very well painted figures.
Awesome thank you 👍
Awesome looking game. 22nd Panzer never fought in Normandy as it no longer even existed at that point, having been disbanded in April 1943. You are probably thinking the 21st which did. They also didn't have Pumas but I get wargamers like to field their toys! I assume the airlanding battalion you mention is a personal fiction?
Denis thank you very much and I’m fully aware it was the 21st Panzer that conducted the real attacks in the area of Ranville and surrounding areas, but what I do with Bolt Action Batrep video’s is to change the names, numbers and locations involved to something similar or a play on words, as I’m not doing an accurate recreation of a specific encounter. If I was, I would not use the Bolt Action order of battle lists but a scaled version of actual orbats, which can be found using the Rapid Fire rules supplement books. That’s why the German force was commanded by ‘Hans Von Gabby’ and not Von Luck and you are correct the 1st Air Landing battalion is made up as was its commanding officer Teak-Casket and not the real colonel Pine-coffin of 7 para 👍 I don’t have any Lorraine schlepper/Marder 1 models, hence the 234 and 250 etc. If you look at some of my other videos the 101st Schwere Abteilung became the 10th and the 7th battalion of the Duke of wellington regiment became the Duke of Gipton regiment when simulating actions around Fontenay and Rauray in late June to name but a few. If I did accurate battle reconstructions then of course I’d use historical units, but its tongue in cheek for Bolt Action. Rest assured I’m an avid Normandy enthusiast and have visited it many times over the years, twice last year alone and going again in April this year and my wife gets on very well with Arlette Gondree as well drinking too much beer whilst I’m on coffee at Cafe Gondree 😂😂
Tables like this are what makes table top gaming awesome.
Thank you very much indeed thats great to read 👍
Absolutely brilliant report, models and scenery!
Thank you WarHogz its appreciated 👍
Dear Daz: As always, a wonderful table, gorgeous painted models, sharp and crisp action reporting. The game itself was utter mayhem both ways, Hats off, very enjoyable. I do believe it truly represented the chaos of your intended mission. A very enjoyable report, and looking forward to seeing more of your works in the future!
Cheers David thank you ver much indeed 👍👍
I don’t know if I am misunderstanding but point blank is +2 not +1 right? Might make it more bloody for your dice. Amazing report, I think you cracked the code for the battle report format
Cheers john and you’re right it is +2 that was my mistake with my V2 head still on 😂👍
Commenting as this is such an underrated channel. Plase keep these coming!! Awesome video, terrain, models and report.
Cheers Mazer_Duck its appreciated, just wish I had more time to do more videos 👍
Loved the video, glad to see you at it again.
Nice one and thank you very much 👍
Outstanding battle rep. Board is amazing and so are the models. Always look forward to your content. Thanks
Cheers Darren its very much appreciated
Nice terrain, where are the buildings from and the roads/walls?
Thank you and as for the terrain it's all scratch built. if your on Facebook go on the Bolt action terrain makers page as well as the main Bolt Action page and search for me 'Daz Van Der Young' and I've done a few 'how to make' posts on buildings, roads, trees and bocage and the like 👍
Fun to watch! Thanks! Great job on the buildings!
Thank you very much Frank its appreciated.
Its just too good , i once again feel like you have raised the bar ! . And a happy new year to you too , and your opponent which i think has helped .
Cheers Gary and defo having Gabby playing the germans made the difference. Looking at using another 'mic' so in future Gabby can explain what he's doing as he's moving figures/vehicles and the audio will be captured etc. 👍
love the terrain, any pointers on where to look to get/make my own?
Cheers Daniel if your on Facebook go on the Bolt action terrain makers page and search for me 'Daz Van Der Young' and I've done a few 'how to make' posts on buildings, roads, trees and bocage and the like 👍
@@dazvanderyoung1911 brilliant, ill give them a look
Great battle report, you did an amazing job recreating the battle space with terrain. 10/10!
Thank you its greatly appreciated
Great stuff as usual, will have to get into 28mm.
Cheers Martin and I think you might know 'Major Hans Von Gabby' 😉 I'm still looking at doing a 28mm Arnhem game 😳 and still have a photo of the 20mm stuff we did all those years ago at the Leeds show in the 90's.
Amazing terrain. I'd love to see a tutorial on you made these buildings. Absolute eye-candy!
Thank you and if your on Facebook, go on the Bolt Action Terrain makers page and search for me as Daz Van Der Young and I've put a few posts on with pictures how I make buildings and other stuff etc.
Superb table as always 👌🏻 I really enjoyed the BatRap with some clutch rolls! Awesome stuff, you are an inspiration 🫡
Thank you its appreciated
A chaotically entertaining batrep, a lil aside every time you mentioned Chateau Camembert I couldn't help but think of Kenneth William's character from Carry On Don't Lose Your Head (Citizen Camembert for those not in the know)
Thank you Frazer and I love the carry on films and I'd forgotten he played that character and went for a tongue in cheek name for the chateau. Might trawl some of the other carry on films for suitable names for my commanding officers etc. 👍
Teak-Casket ? 😂. What would the real commander Pine-Coffin say? 😂😂😂😂
Bob I always try and use fictional names for commanders and units with a 'nod' to the real ones and simply couldn't resist this and having read a few books on the airborne actions in Normandy it seems he had a sense of humour and was well liked by his men so I think he'd smile at it, then b*****k me for it afterwards 😂
@@dazvanderyoung1911 😂I get it and agree. I thought it was very good and shows you know your history. In January 2024 I started Bolt Action with my son and "kid" brother (though we're both retired and far from being kids). I really enjoy watching your video battle reports as they are very professionally done, and fast-paced with commentary that adds to the enjoyment of watching. Your terrain and buildings are inspiring. I see why they are a lot of work - so "Bravo Zulu" and carry on. My son and I were laughing at some silly house rules like a random event where your men got a brew-on that removes all pin markers. 🤔 Maybe not silly. Cheers Daz
Love these table battles, so relaxing to watch. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers its appreciated
This has dramatically improved my Sunday evening, thanks Daz. Top Tier Battle Reports
Thanks James its appreciated
IMO you are producing the BEST BA content on youtube at this moment in time . We all come here for our own reasons , but your knocking it out of the park in every area . Please keep going om with your vision , your making a very selected few happy . BEST WISHES FOR THE FUTURE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU. Gaz in Kent .
Wow thank you very much Gary and a happy new year to you. Just wish I had more time to apply myself more to the video/RUclips side of things, but modelling and building are still what I enjoy the most. Thanks again its very much appreciated.
Where are your trees from Daz?
Most of them are Woodland scenic frames which I twist and shape then add rubberised horsehair and flock. I mount them on large metal washers to give the weight and stability. I also make trees from collected twigs whilst out walking and cut to size and shape, hot glue to metal washers then apply horsehair and flock etc.
Just came across your channel. Great video thx for posting.
Nice one glad you liked it 👍
Do the carpet squares you get have an adhesive backing?
No they are rubber backed so have a bit of weight to them and don't warp. If you go on Facebook and the Bolt Action terain makers page and search for me 'Daz Van Der Young' I've posted quite a few how to guides, one of which was on my carpet road system.
Where is that RAF observer model from mate? Love the battle report and the table layout. Inspiration to make takes look like that to play on at home too. Just gives the games and stories you are telling so much more feel to it. Do you have a V3 report in the works?
Thank you Joseph and its a metal Warlord figure, got it a couple of years ago and I'm pretty sure they still do it.
Just found the channel today, not seen much of Bolt Action but I enjoyed this batrep. I'll add it to the list of games to play aside from my usual Warhammer 40k
Thank you Frazer glad you liked it and I’m very sorry for the late reply 👍
Love your table. Elaborate tables add so much to a game, the immersion aspect.
Thank you Michael its very much appreciated and sorry for the late response 👍
Great video report!! What did you mean by carpet roads?
I make my roads out of strips of carpet that are cut, painted and flocked at the edges.
Ok so the carpet is stripped off and you use just the base like material ?
@@astrocat1128 No because the carpet squares are hard wearing office type ones and are a very small weave, I paint and dry brush the actual carpet. If your on Facebook go onto the Bolt action terrain makers and search for me there as Daz Van Der Young and I've put a few posts on about making terrain ad carpets roads is one them which explains it better etc.
Absolutely amazing terrain , figures and vehicles , I wasn’t overly fond of bolt action but watching your games has resold it to me , I see you have done a step by step paint guide on painting German armour , I don’t suppose you could do the same for the Sherman paint scheme ?
Thanks for explaining how you made all of the terrain pieces and where your models were from. Another great battle report!
Thank you very much and sorry for the late reply 👍
Gear game, great scenery and lovely models. You are an inspiration!
Great video. Your one Panther has about as much luck as mine when I play it in a game.
Thank you its very much appreciated and my die rolling is appalling everytime 😂
As always an amazing job, that makes for a good story telling also, good the wife joined in, Are you planning on adding on any other armies? and while we wait for V3 how about some army showcases ? it is thrilling to here why and how, when you present your units best from Kasper
Thank you Kasper and I do have some Perry’s US infantry, but I am working on some US Airborne that I hope to use in a Batrep video after V3 comes out 👍 My long term project is a new unit of British infantry depicting Scottish infantry using 8th Army figures and converting them into wearing kilts etc. Hope to have that done by the end of the year.
I think actually, the quality of your set up deserves Chain of Command interpretation
Thank you Stephen and I do have CoC rules as it goes and did play a couple of solo encounters to get used to the rules, but was put off with the large amount of die rolling. I also used to play Rapid Fire the original version (when I had 20mm stuff back in the 90’s and have the new updated rules that again I’ve had a ‘dabble’ with in 28mm, but I just like the simplicity of BA and the order die system that was first used back in the 80’s by Bruce Taylor with his order ‘chits’ in a bowl modern rules 👍
as a French, the map is GREAT. The Suze logo on the wall the tiny details, it's great. subscribded.
Merci beaucoup its greatly appreciated 👍 Going to Normandy again this weekend for another sightseeing trip and inspiration in the amazing museums.
Excellent video but them Germans painting scheme is brilliant. How have you done the camo on them please
