The 1939 Polish army in 20mm and for Rapid Fire! rules
Still on the Hastings battlefield, it´s time to show you my Polish army for the 1939 campaign. This one was possible when Hat industries released its infantry and artillery and FirstToFight started the job of producing in a very comprehensive way the vehicles and artillery of the Blitzkrieg period. There is also the help of 3D prints and the usual scratchbuilding, particularly the Smialy armored train. Lastly, the Polish air force is also covered as you can find in plastic virtually everything Poland had in 1939.

Still far from finished - this one is one of those that will never be finished - you can see here a few models that are enough for some battallion sized RF games on the SCW theme. Together wilth my usual conversions based on Revell, Airfix, Esci and Zvezda there are plenty of proper Irregular Miniatures and some BUM figures. This one was possible when Warlord and Perry released their Landwehr and Line infantry plastic boxes. Even so you can see plenty of my usual conversions based on the 28mm Hat figures and many metal officers and characters. Still no artillery, that will come from Perry, but some cavalry and all the infantry are here.

This is one of the three Waterloo 28mm armies I´ve been slowly building since the cheaper plastics from Victrix, Perry, Warlord and Hat started to arrive. These plastics were coupled with some metal from Perry, Victrix and Irregular Miniatures. Perry Miniatures gave a lot of life to this period with plenty of characters of many of his top brass officers, specially for the French side (and that ...

This video shows my aproach in making the two armies on the field, the Saxon and the Norman, using plastic Revell figures. Some Italeri and even some Robin Hood Airfix were used. Of interest there may be the way to make Norman cavalry using Revell foot soldiers and horses from other brands. Also plenty of Saxon infantry got spears instead of swords as these were much more expensive. The shields...

      @@joaopeixoto5249 - There’s nothing (as far as I know) about boggy land or water in the written accounts of the battle. Also the geography of the “accepted” battlesite has no such terrain. Either the shieldwall was deployed in a horse-shoe shape or the battle took place at a different site where there was indeed boggy land on either flank.

      @@sirrathersplendid4825 From the History press: "Battle Hill is no mountain, but it is an imposing position and one well suited to an infantry defence of the shield wall. At its top is a fairly flat plateau, some 800 metres long and about 150 metres deep. It is protected on its flanks and rear by a number of streams and areas of marshy ground that fall away, sometimes pretty steeply, giving an attacker little choice but to go for a frontal assault up the slope that stretches away below the ridgeline for 400-500 metres. This is no easy option, with more streams and boggy ground to negotiate at the base of that same slope, before an army then has to struggle up the incline to the summit itself." This kind of statement is found in several publications. If they are true or not can´t say for sure as there is a dispute over the exact place of the battle (Senlac Hill, Caldec Hill, etc) but its normal for ancient and medieval armies, when on the defensive, to look for an area with covered flanks.

      @@joaopeixoto5249 - That’s interesting. I’ve not been to the battlefield myself (really should go some time!). But from topographical works based largely on modern Ordnance Survey maps, my impression was that there are no streams or boggy areas to the flanks of the accepted battlesite. There’s a very good episode of the archaeology TV programme Time Team, which suggests a more convincing site for the battle - on a spur of land astride the main road from the coast. Worth watching here on yt.

    Great stuff. Interesting comparison with Hat Industries figures. As I understand it, Hat only made a very limited number of figure sets in 28 mm, though I'm not sure how many. I think the 20 mm allow you to adapt your figures a lot more, which is part of the fascination of your videos. But, nevertheless, these look excellent and are full of character, (and a little easier on the eye to paint). I don't know much about 28 mm figure manufacturers. There seems to be a few out there. I saw some online by a company called Calpe. Quite beautiful figures. I hope the Perry brothers have seen this. That was quite an endorsement!

      Thanks Robert. Hat made several 28mm boxes of Bavarians, French light infantry and British cavalry but nowadays I havent been able to catch them. Calpe are the super stars of 28mm as they have loads of French and specially Prussians whose artillery is unmatched by any other brand.

    That is an excellent display 👏 I did not realise how suitable the HaT sets were alongside Perry. Thank you for another enjoyable video.

    Where can one get hold of the Napoleonic Archive books shown in this video?

      They are some 20 years old. Frankly I don't remember from where they came but if you ask in a wargames forum of FB Page someone will know for sure.

    Were there any pre-Bardin uniforms at Waterloo? I would say, very likely yes! Each regiment kept stocks of clothing and equipment at their depot, and it in the incredibly rapid mobilisation of the Hundred Days campaign, they would have issued anything they had on hand. Paul L Dawson has done a lot of archival research on French uniforms - published for example in his (very heavy) book on the French Army at Waterloo - and although I don’t have that particular volume, his other works indicate old stocks being issued alongside newly produced kit.

      Thanks, that is great news. I remember placing that question is a Napoleonic forum and receiving a big NO from most of the people. But, c´mon if many of the French were issue with a coat only why not distributing old uniforms if there were stocks of them?

    Regarding headswaps to improve compatibility of different ranges: have you tried doing this for 20mm Napoleonics? I have a real problem putting HäT figures anywhere near my Italeri or Airfix units because the shakos are so pathetically small. Would a fat Airfix head work on a hyper skinny HäT body? 🧐

    • @joaopeixoto5249
      @joaopeixoto5249 3 месяца назад

      Thanks. Yes they do and I changed dozens of them. My rule though is to use the bodies of Hat, Esci, Revell or Italeri with the larger heads of Airfix and not the other way as they look just silly, specially Hat tiny heads on big Airfix bodies.

    It all puts my Napoleonics to shame, great collection of figures, when all the manufcturers models are mixed together in big groups it becomes hard to single any in particular out. 'Pigeon loft' is the word your looking for.
