Campbell's Restaurant on South Cobb Drive was a familiar family restaurant for a couple of decades in Smyrna, GA. Campbell's was a frequent sponsor in the Osborne High School yearbooks. The audio for this ad was taken from the 1964 Georgia State Boys Basketball Championship radio broadcast on a local radio station WBIE. Campbell's was one of the sponsors for that game. The video was created by ...

The 1975 Robert L. High School Symphonic Band, Marietta, GA. This audio clip is an excerpt from the 1974 Christmas concert held in December 0f 1974 at the OHS gym. Brian's Song was a very popular crowd pleaser. And I'm sure you will agree, the OHS band performed the song beautifully. Brian's Song is a 1971 ABC Movie of the Week that recounts the details of the life of Brian Piccolo (played by J...

This was my sophomore year. I played the clarinet. I remember this being a hard show to learn but we did it and sounded great!! The drill was executed to perfection.
Thank you...
I marched from fall 76 through spring 80. We never played this show.
Fall of 76. I was a freshman. Played trombone. Went from playing quarter and half notes at Floyd Middle School to the fugue in Britten Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra in 3/2 time. Remember hearing the judges tapes from Dalton Music Festival-they were flabbergasted! Played first year with Spirit of Atlanta. Later, I played bone under David Walters at JSU with the Marching Southerners. Another southerner told me how his older brother had played with Southerners as the exhibition band at Dalton during this time and South Cobb High School Blue Eagle Band blew them away. Will always remember these times. What a great experience. Thanks Freddy!
This isn’t The Channel One Suite for beginners. Listen to the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps for Channel One which is the arrangement we played as the opener. We only played I Can’t Get No Satisfaction for homecoming games.
This isn’t South Cobb from the fall 1977 show.
Yep, it is. I played in this band and still remember playing some of the music from that year, 1978. We also participated in band competitions that year.
My brother, Tim Rife, is the trombonist pictured in the middle of that photo. The names are not in order. Thanks, David Lubbers, for posting this.
I went to RL Osborne Jr high for 7th & 8th grades c. 1964-1966. That must have been the original campus mentioned in this story, as its address was Joyner Avenue. The 1st year I attended, the original bldg burned to the ground (set by a "disgruntled" student). I actually lived in the Floyd Road Jr High school district by grade 8, but because the band director Mr. (don't remember his 1st name) Caldwell taught at Osborne, I got special permission to go out-of-district. Mr. Caldwell was considered the states best band teacher for many yrs, winning state championships for Osborne Sr. High many times Thanks David, for posting this. This was all I could find on the subject of the man whom the schools are named for.
Gee, I wonder who was on the yearbook committee that year because my name was the only one left off of the Clarinet player's list. 🙄
slayyy
Appreciate this video and the person that recorded it but I sure can't stand the audience that are chatter boxes during the halftime presentation. IMO it showed no class and disrespect. My two cents.
David - The only time we (Christian County High School Marching Colonels) ever beat South Cobb was in 1976 at Dalton Georgia with both of our bands playing drum corps style music / marching and our uniforms were Caballero clone while South Cobb had uniforms modeled after the Muchachos but in Blue to match their mascot and were always so fantastic. Its amazing that we considered South Cobb our only real competition even though we were from Kentucky. The further south we went, the better we did due to no other Western Kentucky Bands marching drum corps style then. We went to Gadsden, Alabama, Dalton, Ga, and Cleveland, TN each year. Thank you for posting this video as I never ever got to see South Cobb perform during my 4 years of high school.
This was my freshman year playing trombone in the South Cobb Blue Eagle band. When we performed this show at the Southern States Marching Festival in Dalton, the judges couldn't believe we pulled off the 3/2 section of the Young Person Guide. Freddy played the judging tapes for us. Awesome memories! Proud to have been a part of this. Thanks for posting.
I stood next to you in the show. You became my best friend then and now.
Nice. I was a freshman 4th chair sax somewhere in the back field right.
The poor woodwinds were always in the back. Lol. I was one of them, too.
I was a Freshman Trumpet player this year, Mike Beyers. Thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks for posting, I was in the band those years, this audio isn't the Channel One show we marched :(
Can you recall any of the details about the name of the opening song in this audio?
Choctawhatchee Style Marchers (FWB, FL) did this in about 1975, too. This is fantastic.
I was in the band during that season. It was the 79-80
Thanks Quinton. I've changed the video title. Do you happen to recall all of the song titles?
@@LubetheGoob The 2nd song was Chameleon (Herbie Hancock).
Ohs red sea of sound for life we too deep
Loved hearing this youtube.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m in the North Cobb marching band right now and it’s amazing to see the what the band looked and sounded like 40 years ago.
whatever happened to Todd motter?
Guess what? I'm still around and yes I still play! :)
I have fixed the distorted sound on this video, Sprayberry High School Band of Gold. I'll be re-posting it soon.
the brothers martin were as good as they came back then

that tempo almost got away from us
ev dallas - Blasphemy! It didn't! Lol. 🤣
Yes, I do remember that they did play those songs when we competed against them at the Dalton, GA contest in 78. I marched with Christian County High School Band and Sprayberry and South Cobb were the only two bands we really considered our rivals. In Kentucky, there were very few bands in the western part of the state where Christian County is that were doing drum corps style and playing drum corps music. My band director ( Jim Wright) thrived on us going south ... we always received Most Entertaining Band in our class at Gadsden, Al at least the years I marched and in 1976, he had broken his leg at a contest a week earlier and we were ecstatic that we won Dalton that year over South Cobb. However I never got to see the South Cobb band live ... and only saw Sprayberry from the back so thank you so much for these videos Mr. Lubbers. God Bless You

where did you find this
Definitely the fall of 76 show. I was a sophomore (76/77). Learned to love Wagner that year. Also remember forming the star during "Chava" giving me chills.
Joe Baker - Yep! It was our sophomore year.
Mr. Caldwell was a legend. He even showed up at Osborne Middle School in the early 1980's when Mr. Witherspoon was band director to teach and conduct "Ave Verum Corpus" ("...for US!", teaching us the dynamics while singing the lyrics). It is a testament to his love of music, the OHS band and showmanship that he recognized and seized upon the power of the Star Wars theme early on and took the trouble to score it for the band before it was commercially available -- no mean feat in the antediluvian days, BEFORE the Sony Walkman! Thank you for the music, Mr. Caldwell!

Amazing, thanks for sharing
where will the entire game be broadcast on Saturday?
Thanks so much for posting this!!! Brings back a lot of memories.
Thank you for bringing me back. The BOG really was as good as I remember.

Gee, I wonder who Jlacy is? ;) You know me - class of 1979 first chair clarinet. Anyway, yes I thought this was from the Fall of 1978, our senior year. This was a fun show for me because when the color guard was doing the bottle dance I got to twirl a flag. Good times. :)
See the difference from then to now.... We are much smaller now a days

I do have other videos. My video machine is being service at the moment. So, I am in a holding pattern for the moment. My plans are to post everything once I get it back. I'll see if re-recording at that time will improve the quality of these videos. I have posted a couple of music files on the facebook page, SCHS Blue Eagle Band-The Freddy Martin Years.
Larger band from 1975. Faster tempo,
This is from the fall of 1978 (class of 1979) Second fall performance of Mambo as opening piece.
We did Channel One Suite the fall of 1977 (class of 1978).
Doug is right. The first Mambo show was the fall of 1975. Then it was performed the fall of 1978. As to this video, Margaret James is correct: this from the fall of 1976 (class of 1977). Don Grimsley is the drum major.
jlacy0724 - Duane Still was also a drum major that year, I think. There were 2 guys and one gal up front.
David, do you have the video of the South Cobb High School Band from the fall of 1977, which would have been the class of 1978, doing the Channel One Suite show?
The first Mambo show was the fall of 1975
I believe you and Margaret are correct. Mambo was the opening two years in a row, 1977-1978 and 1978-1979. This opening is obviously not Mambo.
This was fall of 1976.... not 1978
I do have one show. I'll post that one soon.
What a blast from the past. Thanks David! Do you happen to have Sprayberry from the era?
not sure this is 1978? I specifically remember the big shiny on the shoulder tubas instead of sousaphones but I do remember the bottle dance being done more than 1 season due to its popularity!
