    Hey Tom- one additional thing. When you got the new compressor I’m guessing (like mine) it came pre-filled with oil. Did you change the oil? Or add/subtract oil? Also on your snowflake dial that you thought might be problematic it looked like the temp sensor was cut… did you fix that? Thanks

    Tom, Excellent choice, these starters work exceptionally well and for the most part were fitted to Japanese vehicles. I've been using same sized 90's Subaru starters on 300 to 600 CI and larger pre World War I vintage racing car and road engines cars for 30 years with excellent results. The amperage draw is so low with these units that on 5-day long club tours with as many as ten+ starts a day a good battery used only for the starter will last all week and then some without a recharge.

    • @tomyangnet
      @tomyangnet 4 дня назад

      @@theoldmotor4811 Vintage Ferraris supply resistor voltage to the coils even at start up, so if the battery is a little weak, there’s not enough voltage to fire the plugs when the old starter is pulling all that current. I have a MUSICAL HORN DIXIE siren, it has 5 horns, it works, but it's not very good, it plays poorly, it doesn't have a strong sound, the compressor is heard more, i.e. the compressor is heard the most, I don't see anywhere on the side that there is a plug for pouring oil, from above where they are screwed on the rubber hoses for the sirens have a cover with 3 screws, maybe the only thing I need to do is unscrew it and then add oil and wd spray

    • @tomyangnet
      @tomyangnet 4 дня назад

      There has to be an inlet port to pull air into the compressor. You can try putting some oil in there to see if it'll pull some in to lubricate the internals. If that doesn't work, take it apart and see. Good luck!

At least it's alot better than with my late 80's 911, which requires lowering the engine/transmission several inches, and even then getting the top mounting bolt is really difficult from underneath the car. Do you think that having the engine start that quickly will lead to premature wear? It seems like during a cold start, there won't be enough time for the oil to circulate before load is being put on areas that do not have lubrication.

      These old Ferraris can be perfectly rewarding driving them spiritedly at 7/10ths instead of 10/10ths on the road and cause potential harm to others and yourself. There's just enough tire slip and body roll to keep you engaged. Modern super cars don't really require your attention unless they're doing triple digit speeds. That's why I think I like the older cars. There's constant demand between the driver and the car, not just relying on horsepower and a traction control program! Thanks for watching.

      When you say it takes forever, how long is that? With 12 cylinder Ferraris, it can take up to 20 minutes before the oil temperature starts to move. The water temp reacts sooner, but there's a lot of fluid that needs to warm up before everything gets to "normal."

I don't get many cold weather days where I drive the Ferrari so I don't have better data, unfortunately. The 308 thermostat has a "plunger" that is supposed to cut off water from the thermostat when it's cold. Some thermostats I was sold don't even have it. Did you check the difference in amps how much different they are?

      I don't have an ammeter to precisely measure that much draw, so would have to rely on the inaccurate gauge. Even if it were the same draw, I know for a fact the cooling was not nearly as quick. Thanks for watching.

    Looks like those fans do the job nicely, hidden away not looking like an add on component. When I drove my 1980 Pontiac around metropolitan NYC area in hot weather I was always tense. The car was designed for a 303 cu.in. engine and I had a 428 in it. 4 core radiator and a flex fan/with shroud was good when moving, but in traffic it would boil the fuel. I added an oil cooler and aux water cooling! The under hood temp was terrible so I washered up the hood from the hinges to let some heat out. I was going to suggest somehow allowing the back of the hood on that 330 to pop up somehow, then at the end of the video you showed the vents. Yes, Ferrari engineering, they were hi performance cars and under hood heat extraction was built in. Just like the E Type Jags with the hood louvers. Another interesting Ferrari video, thanks.

      Big power equals more heat. Modern cars understand how important it is to dissipate the heat. Old cars need a little more help! Thanks for watching!

    Had a Lusso; headed north to Marin from south. Traffic was stopped on the downgrade from the tunnel under the Presidio golf course; over heating loomed. Shut off the engine, the power brakes didn't work. Had rebopped the 'emergency' brakes on the back discs, and done right, they held the car no problem. Passed on a nice 330GTC in the late '70s, sorry I did. Had it for a test 'visit', and it was a wonderful ride.

      Glad your emergency brakes worked! I had to pull over in a 250GTE exiting Concorso behind Laguna Seca one year. It was a show car, so we didn't install modern electric fans. If your still had the Lusso, you could buy two GTCs today and have money left for a 308! Thanks for watching!

      @@tomyangnet Dunno what you have read regarding the CA '49 gold rush, but the people who did well were those who sold to the miners (Huntington, Stanford, Crocker, Hopkins, etc.), not the miners. Suffice to say, my company (1/3rd owner) sold to silicon valley businesses starting when they were not yet Silicon Valley businesses, with similar results. As a punk kid, buying the Lusso in the early '70s was a VERY big deal (as was driving it cross-country, and quite a bit later rebuilding a 250 Ferrari engine after the crank let go from an earlier rod loss [I had to make that cross-wrench to get the timing cover off]). By the time it got sold, it was not really a big deal, and we (married, by then) more than recovered any costs. And then some. Wagon-axle car, had to be careful to avoid R on the upshift from 1st, that wind-wing would take the skin off your left knuckle if you weren't careful, worked like hell during the rebop to keep oil around the pick-up in cornering. Any Toyota was a better automobile, but not a one was a 250 Ferrari. I got to live the dream; imagine Santana's "Samba Pa Ti" coming out of the speakers, driving north across the GG bridge in the Lusso, heading for a date with a gorgeous woman in the wine country, summer evening, say '75, hitting 4th as you left the bridge for the climb into the tunnel, and keeping your foot in it... Wouldn't trade it for anything. Including a couple of 330s and the left-over 8-cylinder change. Hot rods have three pedals; Ferraris have 60* V-12s.

      @@currentbatches6205 Sounds like a wonderful experience owning that Lusso. I sometimes feel bad for the current owners of these cars, as many of them will never experience these old Ferraris on the road as you did in the 70s. Yes, they can be cantankerous and hard to fix, but when they're "on cam" and pulling past 6K, they're glorious. A Camry might be faster, but it's still not a Ferrari! Cherish those memories, and know that you belong to small group of people that lived it!

    I’m now convinced to do a similar mod to my Maserati Indy which has from factory Lucas pusher fans also. Likewise they manage the temps on hot days (90-100F) but only when the car is moving, traffic certainly starts to send the temp gauge up. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.😊

    • @tomyangnet
      @tomyangnet 18 дней назад

      Also remember, after 50 years the radiator can also get clogged with debris, making it a little less efficient, add that with inefficient cooling fans and maybe a rebuilt engine with more power, and you can have a cumulative problem with cooling. If the water temps fall immediately when the car is moving, I would look into better cooling fans. It's the easiest thing to look into first. Good luck, and thanks for watching.

    No shroud on either radiator... The America's belt driven fan would probably be fine if it had a properly fitted shroud directing all the air the fan moves through the core, instead of bypassing. The electric pusher fitted on yours is probably a big help! What is the alternator output on these 330's, and is there a more modern alternative, like the Ford 3G that has a much better output at low rpm?

    • @tomyangnet
      @tomyangnet 19 дней назад

      I don't know if the aesthetics of shroud would work on a Ferrari engine bay! The pusher fan I added helps a lot! The original alternators were 45 or 60 amp alternators, but if I add a higher output alternator, it may overtax the wiring and I would have to add a shunt to the ammeter. Thanks for watching.

    • @jimurrata6785
      @jimurrata6785 19 дней назад

      @@tomyangnet Well again, like your electric pusher a shroud could be removed in its entirety. My personal experimentation (not w/ a classic Ferrari!) has shown that American cars of the '60's, 70's & '80's with factory belt driven fans lose up to 60% of their cooling without a proper shroud. (Typically on the order of 45-50%) but much depends on how close the fan is to the core. Again, with a better (internal fan, integral regulator) alternator you would have much better charging and if you used a fan relay it wouldn't pull any more amps through the ammeter,. Remember, ultimate alternator output doesn't mean a thing. You are never going to see 160A passing through, nor that much swing in the instrument. You're just going to see stable charging system voltage where the old 50-60A alternator had no chance of keeping up at low RPM, and enough reserve that even a helicopter sized electric fan would be okay (up to the power a single belt can transmit, typically 110A) I'm definitely not trying to influence the decisions you make about caring for these magnificent vehicles, I'm just trying to point out that a lot of progress was made between 1964 & 1994. That inadequate cooling should _never_ be a problem another 30 years beyond that, and that none of these 'overlay' solutions aren't entirely reversible. I really appreciate the discussion and consideration you give to my ignorant questions. 🙂
