🎸40 years of playing guitar, singing, and playing in bands has taught me many things. I upload videos about guitars, playing guitar, singing and songwriting, music gear and musical artists. 🎸
Surprising Truth About Guitar Playing In Movies
In this video we will be looking at five movies with guitar playing scenes to determine if the actors "playing" the guitars are actually doing what we are seeing and hearing. The results are not exactly what I expected and I will reveal 3 surprising facts about these scenes that I had no clue about.
Movies covered are Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure starring Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves, Back to the Future starring Michael J Fox, Crossroads starring Ralph Macchio, School of Rock starring Jack Black, and Desperado starring Antonio Banderas.

Why Are So Many Musicians Obsessed with This ONE Guitar?
Always Loved the Explorer
@@earthdog1966 mee too. I think it’s the straight lines for me.
Thanks for this. I had assumed every actor was a guitar virtuoso. Boy, was I wrong!
@@jun6174 I had fun making this one. Had to watch Desperado again as well. Forgot how much I liked that one.
A video of the worst guitar performances by actors would be great. I highly recommend checking out the Zach Attack episode of Saved by the Bell for some of the worst guitar mining you’ve seen on film. (Rockumentary Season 4 Episode 22)
@@worldsheaviestjamband93 great idea. Thanks for that. Was thinking about TV scenes as I know there are a bunch. Appreciate you
No, according to the credits of crossroads its Ry Cooder who is playing the telecaster parts in the battle
@@rocknrollguitar interesting. I’ll take a look again that’s not what I came up with but don’t believe everything you read I guess. Appreciate the insight. TY
Some follow up. The slide parts were played by RY Cooder. Here is what Steve Vai says about the scene in an interview. "During the duel scene - I played all of the guitars except for the slide, that was done by Ry Cooder. So when you see me dueling Ralph [Macchio, who played the role of Eugene Martone], that's actually me.
@EveryGuitarEver oAH I didnt know that! Cool info
That was fun to watch. Thank you! Gotta admit, I got goosebumps watching the Antonio Banderas parts. Desperado is such a cool and unique movie, the music fits in perfectly, and Banderas' whole delivery (including his singing and guitar playing) is nothing short of iconic. Nobody could have done it like him. Need to rewatch this movie stat.
@@bastianogr4960 TY. Agree I just rewatched Desperado the other day after making this vid it really is great. If you haven’t seen EL Mariachi you should definitely check that out as well. Same concept on a lower budget. It stars the actor you see in desperado that has the machine gun guitar cases.
from my understanding, the animated movies Coco and Soul are accurate in how the instruments are played!
@@AlexMenaVideos no kidding. I hadn’t considered animated films. I’ll take a look at those. Appreciate you
Fascinating, thanks for sharing 😊
@@Fishy_Things you’re welcome Appreciate you
Great video! There is one thing I REALLY despise in films and tv shows, and that is when they have a band or musician playing in a scene, and it is blatantly obvious the person holding the instrument has never even held the instrument before in their life. I've seen bass players seemingly strumming chords, guitar players just laying their hand flat on the fretboard while some virtuosic solo plays, and saxophones magically playing themselves while the saxophonist just humps the air. At the very least look for an extra that knows how to correctly hold their instrument.
@@bowel_movement agreed. I’m sure it’s not an issue with the majority of people but if you’re a musician you have to look away sometimes to keep you from being pulled out of the illusion. Appreciate the input TY
I just finished watching this video and wanted to check the comments only to find that there aren't many under the video. To me it seemed like this video was made by a big channel with many subscribers, simply because of the production quality. So it was surprise to find out that wasn't the case. This was a really good and interesting video and you deserve way more subscribers. Keep up the great content.

The 2nd Pic you showed was a Chinese rep 😢
The Explorer sounds great, and the shape is different and unique. But I prefer the 1958 shape to the more pointy 1976 shape. I will also say, the Explorer is much more attractive than an SG (which is almost as bad as a Corvus).
I am yet play a Explorer

How the hell do you not put Michael Schenker's black and white flying V on this list is beyond me.
@@cybermanne ooooh my bad I really should have sorry about that. Great call out.
@@EveryGuitarEver That's the first one I thought of when I saw the title of your video. lol
@ I’ll give it some love down the road. MSG was a fav of mine when I was younger. Good opportunity to showcase the Schenker brothers Vs
@@EveryGuitarEver MSG were epic for a few years in the late 80s eary 90s. I dunno if Michael and Rudolf have reconciled. But a few years ago Michael said some pretty hateful things about Rudolf and all the other members of Scorpions. Imo the best era of Scorpions was with Uli. But the best album is Lovedrive where Michael was insanely good. After that album I think they kinda fizzled out. They had some mega hits, but for me it's almost like they stopped playing metal and started playing pop metal or power ballad metal. Those albums just doesn't do it for me.
@ I wasn’t that tuned in to their relationship. That’s interesting. Saw the scorpions here in Vegas for the for the first time this year (I know that’s sad). One of those bands I missed back in the day unfortunately. They still put on a great show imo
gotta say, you are all about the guitars but dont know the frankenstein story.... doesnt speak well for future videos
@@notpurple this one wasn’t really about the history or origins of these guitars just that they stood out. Nothing wrong with learning new things imo.
jake e lee all the way!!!!! not an exciting looking guitar tho

I believe it was CC Deville who had a guitar that had a Nagel girl on it. Nagel pictures were all the rage, just think Duran Duran album cover art and you know what a Nagel is. Can't get more 80's than that.

YES!!! Lynch has always been my #1 followed by Warren, Jake e Lee, Andy Larocque... I always thought the kamikaze was bad ass esp. with an actual pic of a real kamikaze fighter pilot... then the bombs!!.. hell yeah, bad ass... but what really caught my attention was the one he used in his instructional video. It was a kamikaze also, but in a desert storm finish!!! ...When i saw that i was done for, i had to have it!!! (Still don't) 😂 but one day, it'll be on my wall but it has to be the original ESP version not the LTD. ....One day... i can dream right?!! and while im dreaming i might as well get the J Frog bones guitar too huh?!! 😴.....😂😂😂 Great rundown of the best 80's paint jobs!! 👍

AMAZING VIDEO MAN! you should do the same for the 90s….. (more specifically covering ALL of Billy Corgans many Strats), Keep it up dude
@@teddysmith07 I just might. Felt bad about leaving the dime bag guitars out but 90s
I find it so ergonomic and comfortable to grab the body under my right arm but maybe I'm wearing it too high. But I'd like to try it with a 25.5" scale.

That's a little thing called enthusiasm my friend....love the energy!
@ appreciate that.
New to the channel. Cool content, but the over-the-top, high pitched delivery is abrasive. It's okay to dial it back just a hair.
@@skatertrev7 appreciate the feedback. I’ll keep that in mind
My first quality guitar ❤ An ergonomic nightmare, but Eastwoods neck profile helps a lot, the build quality is impressive and the vintage tone is spot on. Only 20 frets and anything beyond the 15th is not that accessible but overall a great axe... Just make sure you also have something more mundane in your arsenal. Also I wouldn't call it Decò, it's more of a late 50s Space Race era futuristic design. Kind of what they thought the future would look like in 1959, it's just the coolest thing. I'm never gonna part ways with it.
Both great .

I had the change to play an explorer. Sitting down, I prefer the sg. Standing up, I prefer a rickenbacker 330 or 620. Jk. I love the sound of an explorer but there’s something about pointy guitars that doesn’t appeal to me
@@bluemanfansam seems like there is a divide between pointy and non pointy shapes for sure. It’s all preference.
I do like the Explorer shape, but don't know if it would be very practical for my MOR, pop-rock gigs.
@@nealixd.3011 The Edge made it work for pop. I think he’s doing just fine 😂😂😂
I was mainly a Gibson man from 1969 to 2003, and owned quite a few LPs, SGs, and 335s over the decades, many of the classics, even a 1959 Gibson ES-335 w/OHSC in the red cherry as my first Gibson for $185 (used) in 1969. I cut a lot of gigs on SG Standards and Specials from '69 through 1979. I still own three great Gibson guitars (new purchase 2010 SG Std.- 60s model, used 2010 (HSH) Nighthawk Std. and a clearance priced 2013 EB5 bass). I came to realize that Gibsons are more of a luxury item, these days mostly for bragging rights, ha, and not necessarily a practical working man's electric guitar for gigs. Henry J. pretty much priced out the working musician from 1985 onward, but the quality was not commensurate with the high prices. Gibsons have always been problematic. My first new SG Std. in 69, was stamped a Second, although I was never sure why, ha. Now I own a lot of other big name brands that I find play and sound better than Gibsons, with many more player friendly features I like. I can find new and used USA, Canadian and Asian brands under a grand that are just fantastic guitars. I usually play a bunch of a particular model, and take my time, sometimes years, until I find the exact one that suits me best, and I'm usually in no rush, I'm pretty picky. Gibsons just don't make the quality or player friendly cut anymore. To me they have more issues than benefits anymore, esp. at the ridiculous prices,, and don't even come set-up, with a lot of tuning instability. The three Gibsons I have I was very picky about and passed up a plethora of others. I don't plan to buy anymore. Just not worth it to me on any level of quality, price, features, set-up, tuning stability, correctly cut nut, etc. They are famous for the headstocks shearing off, which is mainly why I hesitate to take them to gigs. One unexpected bump and you're looking at a repair job, which can hurt resale. I might try taking out the Nighthawk one of these days, the headstock doesn't have the drastic pitch of the LP, SG and 335, etc., and it has two coil taps and the basic versatility of a LP combined with Strat features. That badboy might cut the gig, TBD. But, I will have a Fender, Charvel, Carvin, etc. SSH Strat style as a back-up on hand most likely.
@@nealixd.3011 thanks for all the info this is great. Love hearing the war stories. Appreciate you
$6000 for a very heavy, very fragile guitar that wont stay in tune that you are afraid to play because its an investment. They are just for posers . Doctors lawyers, overlords.

I have a 93 custom shop in heritage cherry. I love that guitar. I am a bigger guy so it looks better on me than my les Paul. The band I was in when I first got it in 97 used to refer to it as the coffee table. Lol.
@@lucyfuir6386 ha! Great story. I’ve heard a couple people saying it’s a good choice for bigger players. I’m not a big guy so probably would bury me 🤣🤣
@EveryGuitarEver The playing position also sits to the left so if you have wide shoulders or have long arms it's a better fit for your natural fret hand position.
Sadly I love Theodore. I can't be the only one. Looks like as if Gibson designed a Tele.
@@olganesterowicz2112 it’s an interesting looking guitar. I don’t think it’s ugly, in fact I would say it’s somewhat elegant. That guitar needs a big name to champion it and then it would go over imo.
If you don't like the Explorer or SG, you gargle ball-gravy.
