    I was 17 when this movie came out and I was in Orange County. Not only is the movie extremely accurate in how we acted and what we talked about but also the music was amazing as is was ALL music that was playing on the radio top 40 right at that time. I knew guys exactly like Jeff Spicoli. When I watch the movie it's like going back into a time machine. EVERY boy lusted after Phoebe Cates. After seeing the movie I went and Read the book by Cameron Crowe. Most of the book is depicted in the film with a few notable scenes. But overall the look and feel of the film was very spot on.

      We totally forgot to talk about the music. The Go-Gos kicking things off was the perfect early '80s choice. Apparently there was a battle between the producers and the director over song choices, with the former wanting a bunch of LA/Eagles-based acts, and Amy Heckerling wanting more contemporary music. She had to fight to get Oingo Boingo as the credits song.

    It deals with toxic shame and the shame bound identities or “role selves” that many Asian Americans find themselves in. Immigrant parents heap expectation on their children and demand perfection leading to a false persona, a polished veneer, as you are viscerally taught who you are as an actual human is not even close to being good enough.

    I feel like this is generational thing, I don’t think it’s exclusive to only Asian Americans! As a 40 year old white woman I feel just as much pressure and loneliness which is a big problem for everyone our age! It’s not a race thing. Why does everything have to be about race! Their both fucking American!! I’m first generation German! I don’t go around calling myself German American!

    Nobody is putting black characters in movies to spite fans. The fact that she is black or that there are black elves is NOT a scandal! People audition and the best actors are picked. The fact that white people are acting like Halle was just selected for political reasons and there was some better white actress who was not selected is ridiculous. Africa is the oldest civilization on earth, black people have been around since the beginning of time. Everywhere, including England. We didn’t just pop up as slaves in America. Sir, you said a lot more about yourself than you did about the movie. Yikes 🤦🏾‍♀️

    • @meanpomeranians
      @meanpomeranians Год назад

      Hi, thanks for commenting. White guy responding here, since your comment was directed at me: It seems to me that you’re making a race-neutral argument. By saying that auditions are race-neutral and that only the best actors are picked defends the ideology of white-corporate PR messaging. There’s nothing a corporate media CEO would love more than someone saying just what you’ve said. Perhaps you feel that Disney, et al have achieved total equality and that only the best person for the job gets the job. I don’t. Media corporations are in business for one thing: to make money on their product. No company just hires the best singer. It has an army of marketing and PR people with huge budgets, bolstered by research into audience demographics, and possessing a keen awareness of how to get attention for their product. Attention is the key element in this process. In a social media sphere, there’s nothing like free attention to generate sales and increased wealth for the corporation. This is why these culture battles play out over media such as YT. Scandal sells. OK, so my theory (I said it was a theory, not fact) is that I suspect studios have reached the next stage in information-based capitalism and are intentionally casting and scriptwriting for controversy, knowing that it will get attention. I find this concerning, because it is not about equality and instead about appropriating people of color to increase their profits. I’m not at all suggesting that her race was the sole reason for her casting. As we said in the video, she was fantastic and the right actor for the film. But I also question whether, in a more general sense, these mega production studios are race-neutral in their casting decisions.

    I don’t know much about Koreans outside of a few dramas (which in sure are VERY representative of the culture lol). But even I knew immediately a big part of this show was a commentary on Korean culture and specifically what I gathered was the Korean American experience. The negotiation of culture and assimilation. There were patriarchal commentaries. Commentaries on class and how those experiences differ but also how they mirror one another. Obviously the therapy stuff the generational trauma and unwillingness to confront issues. There was so much there and I imagine someone who is Korean would have gotten way more.

    I completely agree with the part about many Asian Americans (and I’m sure immigrants in general) having to grow up fast. When your parents don’t speak the language you have to help and lead them on things you have no concept about (taxes, legal matters, business). You feel like your parents are helpless in many ways and that its your job is to protect them, and it makes it feel like you don’t have the guidance you need to navigate your early life. All while feeling this debt that you feel like you can never repay because they made so many sacrifices so that I can live the way that I do.

    I’m not Asian but I’m Latina and you just helped me understand better why therapy hasn’t worked super well for me. I always feel like I have to do my therapists “homework” and feel a certain way after, and I don’t feel comfortable questioning or pushing back because it makes me feel like a failure or ingrate or something. And instead of feeling free and uplifted it just feels like another relationship I have to manage and perform in. Further complicating things is that my therapist is a white guy and there are certain aspects of my experience that I have to go out of my way to explain to him, or he doesn’t even consider to ask me about in the first place. He’s not a bad therapist but I don’t think we are a good fit.

    First generation Chinese here, I love the show. I think it sheds light on my mentality and it rings so true to me that there is a lot of internalized pressure to perform to be in a relationship with family. When that performance falls short, it turns into anger and anxiety, because the goal is blocked. This doesn't only go for oneself but toward their spouse, children, or even friends.
