CRITR rappel device break test. After successfully passing the UIAA test (we loaded the CRITR to 1,600lbs for 1 minute in 18 different friction and rope settings), we decided to load until failure (not part of the UIAA test but interesting to see how the CRITR performs under extreme load). Rope is new Bluewater Canyon Pro 8mm. Monitor on screen shows how many pounds of force. CRITR breaks (afte...

Wow! This has been around 10 years? I just bought one and plan on using it for a canyoning trip next week. Glad I ran across this demo! Thanks!

Love the way you back up to the edge bounce up & down to test the anchor with no safety line on. “ Seems good” he says, good thing it was…

Does it work well on a double line rappel? Thank you for the video.

Would you suggest using a safety with this setup? Like a VT Prusik?

No reason not to. People with single point of safety are going to be more likely to have an accident.

Thank you ! I love the ' in motion' tutorial. SO much better. Just purchased the CRITR2.

The CRITR (and now CRITR2) has become very popular. I seem to see it in canyons more often than the Totem now, and maybe as much as the ATS (no relation to the ATC, for any climbers reading this). On 8mm ropes the Piranha seems to be used mostly by light people, and at 180lbs it's too fast on long freehangs on any of the friction settings. Over 200ft you'll have to add friction at least once, maybe twice, and the additional options of the other devices become essential for anyone over 180 lbs. The point is for the device to do the work, and the break hand only fine tunes, and can stop easily at any time (for a tangled rope below, for example). I'm not associated with the makers, and I don't have a Critr, I just noticed that the other comments here were old and outdated. I've been using the Totem and the ATS. The newer Sqwurl (version 2) is out now, and ordered one to try out next for its friction options mid rappel. There are many factors which require setting the friction on rappel, particularly with 8mm SRT (single rope technique) which is the most common in canyons. You generally share ropes, and you find out on rappel how slick someone else's skinny rope is, dry at first, and then again after it gets wet. Also, you're always ready to rescue someone stuck on rappel (one of the main reasons to rappel single rope) and you need the option of doubling the friction when you do a pickoff.

If you use 2 wraps on the right side like that, it's gonna destroy your rope. You never want rope on rope friction. Just use a real figure 8.

Im a large man 6'3'' 250 pounds . will this device hold up to me and my size , not all climbers are 5'6'' 140 pounds

The CRITR will easily handle you. I've got fellow canyoneering friends pushing 300 lbs range that use it and love it.

Good question. There is little rope on rope contact for most friction settings on the CRITR but this ok as long as both contact ropes are moving. As an example the Munter Hitch generates most of its friction with rope on rope contact but this does does not harm the rope. (much).

Coool! Is there no issue if there is rope on rope friction? I guess not, because it's not the same spot, right?

Thank you all for your comments. The CRITR is symmetrical and it also has 'arms' which the Pirana (and ATS) do not(little 'horns' don't count!). If you check out canyonwerks.com you can see the full CRITR instructions which show multiple friction options for the CRITR that other devices do not have. We are pleased that Rich Carlson (inventor of the TOTEM rigging/rappel device) has added CRITR instruction to his famous canyoneering/ rigging/ totem seminars. Rich is one of the most notable founders of the sport of canyoneering and his endorsement of the CRITR (replacing the Pirana and ATS) means a LOT to us! Check out Rich's TOTEM on facebook. Thank you Rich and to those of you (550 and counting) who are now using the CRITR. We really appreciate it. Best, Todd and Desi P.S. worked on steel version for a while: too heavy, too expensive. At least CRITR in aluminum will last longer than other devices cause you can flip it over!

It's a simetric pirana, nothing else.

CRITR rappel device has multiple friction settings that can be added WHILE YOU ARE RAPPELLING. The ATS does not. CRITR rappel device creates minimal rope twist. The ATS twists the heck out of the rope. The Pirana was the best canyoneering rappel device, until the ATS. Now there is the CRITR- once you try it, you won't go back.
